I am a nurse educator for a large health system in Washington and one of the things I have noticed is that even very smart and experienced nurses and doctors are having difficulty remembering new educational concepts since we implemented mandatory masking. It is taking 3 or 4 times as many educational hours to help staff learn new concepts. I think this has to do with visual learning and facial cues giving us a neurological pathway to store new information and incorporate it into our mental knowledge processing centers. Can we please consider having instructors wear clear masks or face shields instead of masks that obscure their faces? I think this will help students to be able to learn better and I have noticed improvements in knowledge absorption when I make my face more via able during instruction.

All public schools need a distance learning option. Full stop. Do not force us to play Russian Roulette.

I too can't believe we are still battling the question of wearing masks. We're all just trying to get through this, it ain't perfect, but it will help. If it's too much of an infringement, home school on your own. Peace be with you all.

Why are face shields an alternative for students and not staff?... science shows that shields are just as effective as masks (especially when most masks are ill fitting and dont seal properlt) AND protect the eyes which are a poorly understood route of entry that masks do not? In addition they are easier to sanitize and less apt to cause respiratory or skin irritation or cause illness from improper cleaning. They are also less likely to encourage frequent face touching like constantly adjusting a mask. Finally...they at least allow students to observe facial expressions and lips during instruction.

The comment section is cute. Looks like my kids will be studying abroad next year where they can enjoy a full-time education.

Superintendent Reykdal - Please wear what you would consider an appropriate face covering when producing these videos. First this would demonstrate that you are confident you can effectively communicate your message while wearing a face covering. (This is what you are asking of our teachers.) Second it would demonstrate that you are willing to lead by example in doing what your are asking every public school employee in the state of Washington to do this fall.

Leading by example in this situation doesn't involve delegating good thinking to the principle of wearing a face mask. It's not right to assume that people watching this video can't differentiate between the message being presented here and the actual policy. @Steve Christensen, don't assume that people are less intelligent than you.

Just like when Inslee went house shopping with his entourage and nobody wore a mask. Fraud.

My kids will never wear a mask to school. If the need is so great that masks are deemed necessary, they are staying home.

Just tell us what the hoops are we're going to have to jump through. I don't have time for an overly long video. If you're going to require masks, then we can only hope there will be some teachers that don't enforce it too strictly in their own classrooms. Imagine being a K-6th grade teacher; you'll spend half the day enforcing mask rules. And in high school; no drama club or plays? No sports? Can't do any of those with a mask.

      K. PacificNW If teachers won’t enforce rules, they should not be allowed to teach. This is a clear danger to students.
