    These projectors made my day, when the teacher brought one into the classroom. They were a bit noisy, but that was ok 👍🏻, as long as you didn’t have to do written work.

    I went to school in 80's and 90's, right at the transition from 16mm movies to VHS tapes. I was the class projectionist. I loved threading the film through the machine and rewinding it when the movie was over. I also remember the big media carts with a CRT television set strapped to the top and a vcr on the middle deck. Putting a videocassette into the vcr just didn't have the same feel.

    I’ve always wanted to own one of these. I’ve been fascinated by then since my schooldays in the 70s. I spent more time watching the projector than I did watching the films.

      @@sriramramamoorthy1589 Hi. The sound is part of the film. It's either a very thin magnetic strip on the film, or more commonly an optical signal on the film read by a sensor in the projector.

    I haven't fed one of those since elementary school in the 70's, yet when I saw the profile view in this video, I recalled exactly how to feed it and recalled some of the malfunctions and how to remedy them.
    How in the world is that still etched into my brain!

      because its like riding a bike . I was a film projectionist in the 80s and when I saw a VICTORIA 8 35MM the other day I still knew how to do it. I used to do no handed windmills in breakdancing in the 80s and I'm now 51 and can still do it after a 30 year break from it. muscle memory

      I got mine in almost the same way. They had everything on the ramp from the school's basement for sanitation to pick up and thrown out. So on the way home I went to the ramp in the back of the school and picked up the projector. But there were no films since they were using VCRs in the school at that time.
      But when I went to school we had one in English language class and we watched and analyze the short films for there meaning. We also would get discounts to go to the movie theater to analyze and wright about the movie we saw.

    I was a projectionist all through school (Elementary, Jr Hi, and Hi School) Used this same type of the Bell & Howell projector ... I was showing a movie on one like this in the jr hi auditorium to a class on Nov 22, 1963 when a teacher crying while storming in the auditorium shouting for me to turn this projector off and directing all the kids to go back to their classroom as Kennedy was just assassinated.

  • @Abitibidoug

    Yes, I remember these projectors quite well. In the late 1960s and 1970s I've lost count of how many films I've seen, mainly at school, using one of these projectors. I figure Bell and Howell made more than a million of them in those days. Another feature I remember was the optical sound track on one side of the film.

    When I was in school in the late 90s, we still watched films on this kind of projector. I was always very fascinated by the projector and often looked more on the machine than on the screen. My school did not have a VHS player at the time. In 1999 I switched school and the new school only used VHS. I remember seeing the very same educational film there, on VHS, but the quality of the rental tape was a thousand times worse than on the 16 mm print.

    I taught film-study courses in high school Fine Arts Departments for 40 years, using 16mm Singer-Graphlex projectors rather than Bell & Howell or other brands that were self-threading and could tear up film that had splices or torn sprockets. When the VHS and DVD eras impinged on the nostalgia, I had amassed a decent collection of 16mm films and would still try to use the movie projector, which fascinated the students (who by then also were into computers and had trouble recognizing typewriters!). Glorious years, though disposing of the films and hundreds of books about film/film-makers is difficult now in my forced retirement.

  • @rupe53
    @rupe53 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    These self threading machines were the last generation before everyone started switching over to video tape. I cut my teeth on the original machines that were manufactured post WWII when you had to manually thread the film through all the sprockets and tensioners. In those days you had to know what you were doing or you'd tear up the film. This was in the days when most of the projectors were either Kodak or Kalart. (sp?) Bell & Howell came much later and they pioneered the auto-thread units.

  • @JohnnyT002
    @JohnnyT002 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm not to sure of the model but when the school where I worked at was throwing out old items a 16mm Bell & Howell was in the junk pile they put outside. And since they cosidered it to be garbage, When I left to go home I went around to the things they put out on the ramp for Sanitation to pick up and pulled out the projector and took it. I still have it Today.

    Thank you for bringing back many warm memories of countless school classroom movies. My favorite such memory is of our Spanish teacher, Mr. Russo, who spoke multiple languages. He would play parts of the movies backwards where the audio sounded like an alternate word in English or Spanish. The one I remember is “ola,” backwards sounded somewhat like “hello” (technically more like “aloe). It was quite the endearing quality in a teacher who would mix learning with levity. Also, I was taught to read by Dr. Seuss, so I tended to “hear” such things myself.
    I will now search for another learning tool from the last century: we also watched quite a few “filmstrips” in my elementary school years; these were shown while a vinyl phonograph record was played along to narrate. A few intrepid teachers would add use a knob on the phonograph to pause playback to add their own commentary or illustrations.
    Edit: I remembered to subscribe! 😅 Thanks again!

    Many years ago as a ground photo systems tech in the US Air Force I would repair these daily while stationed at Elmendorf AFB Alaska. They were used to show movies at the remote sites throughout Alaska. It was the only form of entertainment at the sites. No video (VCRs) yet back then, no internet. Our film library would send out the popular movies in the 16mm film format.

      Take the back cover off and see what's happening. Could be a gear or belt issue

    what means 16mm?

    • @kevlar6836

      That how wide the film is.

      8 mm is the width of most home movies. 16mm is the width of higher quality movies. 35mm is the width of professional movie house films. 70 mm is exciting to view as it has even more to view per film cell.
