    It really does fill me with despair though just how often this idea comes up. In reality we've understood the thermodynamics of this for over 100 years, and machines to get water from the air will always be hugely more expensive than other methods of getting water. Hell even reverse osmosis is about 100 times cheaper than running a dehumidifier to get water!

      Well to be fair Solidworks is used in engineering. Probably not at the University of Applied Arts though. We knew they were industrial designers from the start. If I'm not mistaken they stated that in their first trailer. Too bad "industrial designer" sounds so fancy to most people who don't realize it refers to people who design the shape of a consumer product's outer case.

      How can they ask you to present a working prototype as an industrial designer when most of the work into the product goes into the insides(function) and industrial design deals mainly with the outsides(aesthetics and ergonomics)? Do they ask you to do 10x extra work that is beside your specialization? Can't imagine what they would want with a working prototype from a college graduate though.. How impressive can that be? The best thing I can imagine is the insides of an existing product on the market with a 3d printed case. I don't doubt Dyson has industrial designers in their employment, as do all companies that deal with consumer products.

    All of these kickstarters remind me of a device I "invented" as a kid. I drew a handheld laser cutter that had a starter battery, but had a photocell on the other end to absorb the laser energy, and recycle it forever. Basically a laser perpetual motion machine. It was not any less feasible than other kickstarters I've seen such as this one, maybe I should start a campaign? Making the CG rendering would be a piece of cake, that's all you need to get rich, right?

    I run a dehumidifier pretty often, very cheap and effective for producing smelly, rusty water. It's called an air compressor.
    You'd know your dehumidifier would be working at optimum when it's raining.

    I don't expect journalists to be experts on complicated engineering topics, but I think they should talk to someone who does. A lot of these articles are indistinguishable from corporate press releases. The one question that they should ask is "Why has nobody done this before?".

    Using dessicants to "collect water" requires separating water from the dessicant, which takes even more energy than simple cooling and condensation, even more impractical.

    • @Ugly_German_Truths
      @Ugly_German_Truths 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      they do not use actual dessicants as in cat litter boxes... it's more a description of how the dehumidifier works, i think most of the examples shown use something like piezzo elements to cool down air and get its water content thereby to condense
