  • In North County, Tony’s Jacal is legend. Not sure what the meaning of life is, but those turkey tacos are at least in the running. Family-owned and run since 1946. Some employees have been there 40 years. You park your car thinking club soda… then you park your butt and hear yourself say “margarita.” It feels like you walked into someone’s home because you did. Or at least it used to be. After WWII, Tony Gonzales returned from military service and his wife Catalina gave him a heads up that she’d be opening a Mexican restaurant in their parent’s home. Just start serving tacos out the front door of the humble place they raised their kids. Hence the name “Jacal,” which means “little shack” or “old building.” Word got out about their turkey tacos and chile rellenos, and they had a line down the street. People drove down from L.A. It was bonkers.
Tony passed away May 1, 1974, and Catalina on April 24, 2000. Today, their two daughters, grandchildren, and great grandchildren carry on the Tony’s Jacal tradition in tribute. In our new SDM video, one of those grandkids-general manager Raymond Rincon Jr.-shares his family’s story.
