- The plaintiff says he and the defendant were roommates and split expenses evenly, but he claims she moved her boyfriend in and still expected him to cover half. He claims she even locked him out from his belongings, so he’s suing. The defendant says they did split bills three ways, and she claims she tried to return his stuff. She’s countersuing for unpaid rent and utilities.

I think these shows pay the actual judgment in almost all of cases. This show has a judge, baliff, an announcer and two interviewers to pay for. Most of these shows have half that. People's Court aint got it to be giving out $5k willy-nilly.

Worst verdict I've ever heard. He should've gotten thousands for what she did. I'm so disappointed in this judge. What was so unbelievable about a relative charging him to stay with them after he was kicked out? Maybe the amount might have seemed a bit high but not unlikely they asked him for some type of compensation. I don't know I thought it was strange that she brushed that off as "I don't believe you".

the judge should have penalized her more than those pennies she rewarded him with. the judge was horrible in this case.
As an attorney, I like The People's Court because Judge Milian actually follows the law. Here, the legal remedy was to have the property returned. The law is never going to allow for someone to buy a bunch of new stuff and claim it as damages, regardless of how "in the wrong" the defendant was. It's about the law, not emotions.
Just as a landlord would have been penalized for an illegal lock out, she should have been penalized as well.

@@dirtyboypdx: As an attorney, you don't believe this individual should've been fined for the illegal lockout? She took on a tenant, which makes her a landlord and she should've been treated as such. In many states, The landlord can be fined between $200 and $500 for each day the lockout continues.

Few years ago my sister and her adult kids came to me crying about they had no place to live me feeling sorry for them allowed them to come into my home and stay there temporarily under a verbal agreement that they would pay their share of the utility as I own my home never paid me anything and it was nearly impossible for me to get them out of my house created bad blood between us so having learned my lesson I don't allow anyone into my home anymore regardless of whether or not they are family or what they're sad story situation is I simply do not care because it's not my problem I pay my bills and I have the feeling that if they had paid their bills they would not be having the problems they're having

Funny part the judge robbed the plaintiff and never made her prove how much the rent actually was. I bet money she had rental assistance too. This was why she didn't want him on the lease. I bet her rent was about $245-$300 a month. No way even in the hood where they are from can you get more than 1 room for $695 facts!!!! The boyfriend is now getting pimped and that's how she lives.

I think all landlords should have to take a crash course on the law before they are able to rent to anyone. That would solve a lot of issues for the courts.
Maybe. It’s not that landlords don’t know the law (she’s only the landlord in the sense that it’s her apartment, but she’s not the landlord of the building, so this is different). It’s that they hope renters don’t know the law. Most renters do not, and they will leave after a notice rather than call the police or make a bee line to the courthouse when they’re locked out. Renters don’t know their rights, which allows many a landlord to get away with sheisty behavior.

2 people signed a contract to split all the money for the equal usage of utilities & rent. If a third person enters, they should be held to the same contract & contribute to the water they use for showers,laundry & food. Same with electricity with charging phones, watching tv having a light on ect.... That third person adds usage to everything & that is not a contract that the roommate signed.
Sounds like what my roommate did to me when she made a false police report about me. She went through all my belongings. She then sold and gave a lot of my stuff away. When I confronted her about it, she acted as if I was crazy or like someone stole my stuff. She also used a lot of my friends when I was locked up. What a mess. I do not miss my mid-20s. My ex-girlfriend would change the locks on me all the time too over a argument. It's like these people only want you around to get their needs met, and when that goes away they discard you.

The purpose of coming to court is to make you whole even though we wished the judge had punished her for the illegal lock out.
Not feeling that verdict at all.....the Plaintiff definitely should've been awarded more than a measly $284. A lock-out, items thrown away, and an illegal eviction is worth at least $3000 or better yet $2840.

Her having friend move in was already in violation of their agreement. Not only between the 2 of them as roommates, but also the agreement signed with the leasing office. She was totally and wholly in the wrong and should've been held responsible from that point. The roommate shouldn't have to give any notice whatsoever in this case
