@@lbrownnz2156 Waimak in general. Historically the best day of the year at the mouth is St Patricks day. Waimak fish tend to bolt upriver pretty quickly due to the fact the river drops in flow rapidly after a fresh. If the action is slow in the lower reaches then it's unlikely a truckload of fish will be be found upriver. Late Feb onwards could produce upriver.
Hi Amazing video just wanting to ask you where exactly is a nice place to catch salmon in this river cos i m going to christchurch in Nov and would love to try my hands in this river. On the map river shows really dry and the looks deep just near the mouth of the river or near the national highway no 1.
This river water is from glacier of southren Alps in South Island. NZ is most safe and good environment country in world. Kiwi says that This is the last paradise in the world. Good Luck.^^*
Lovely fish. I've never seen you using a fly rod to go after salmon and this water looks ideal for light Skagit tackle.
If only we got those fish up north, solid video mate
Your fishing is so wild but very exciting, very nice catch. I want to join your fishing Hope to see you around sir,

Good fish mate! What gear are you using? Lovely dog too, what breed is it?
black labrador
This is where all my sushi comes from
Great videos. I was wondering what camera you use? I do a lot of kayak fishing for trout and would like to get a head mounted camera.
Steve Hugo I have rigged up my own action cam by fixing a canon legria to my cap..works a treat
Thanks for commenting

What size leader you recommend for salmon fishing the Waimak? 6lb or 8lb?
I'd go a bit heavier. 15lb for general fishing, and maybe 10-12lb if using smaller spinners in clear water.
@@Kevinohanlons thanks mate, when do you think the salmon will reach Oxford end of the Waimak?
@@lbrownnz2156 March is the best time mate
@@Kevinohanlons is that for the top end or just Waimak in general?

6:35 is when he actually catches the fish.
No, that’s when he hooks the fish. He doesn’t catch it until it’s on the land.
Think you can get rid of the net and use the lab lol
