    The keyhole cover wasn't because Lincoln didn't want you to see the keyhole it's swivels over the keyhole to keep dust and dirt out. The door extension is to keep snow, slush or mud off the running board ( as the keyhole cover keeps the keyhole clean) this way he doesn't get his dress soiled.

      I think you are right about Lincoln’s plan for everything but “his” dress. Remember this was 1938.
