It does have a lot of fun nods to the theme park ride, which has a surprising amount of lore. Leota, Gracey, The Bride, and The Hatbox Ghost (Crump) are all original characters from the ride, created in the 70s.
Most of the gags and set designs are from the ride too like the dueling ghosts, the infinity hallways, the busts, the punny headstones, stretching room with false ceiling, ghosts following you home, the 999 spirits, the incantation at the end, etc… all from the ride.
Grey Gardens 😂 please never change. I'll probably catch this streaming eventually on a really boring rainy weekend. This is basically the Temu version of Casper meets Crimson Peak.

If only they had the nerve to actually do a Guillermo del Toro version as originally considered. Dark with elements of comedy. But like you guys said. The kiddies take priority. That's ok. Hope they make some money off it.

Not that big of a diff but i think Lakeiths character makes the lens to relate to/bond over his wifes work as a ghost tour guide (he presents it to her before she dies). he doesn’t believe in ghosts after she dies which is why the camera is buried in a closet and he gives up on his work. Honestly thought it added decent motivation to him willingly dying because now he knows ghosts are real, and he probably could go see his wife again.

I was. SHOCKED. When it came out that this was 2+ hours. I would be looking for all kinds of excuses to visit the restroom.
Recently saw the movie. Jared Leto's character wasn't the owner of the haunted mansion. A widower name Gracey was the owner. Gracey paid Jamie Lee Curtis's character to have seances in his house for a year in order to contact his dead wife. The seances open a spiritual doorway that allowed Leto's character to enter the mansion. All of the ghost in the mansion are people that Leto's character killed as a ghost in that mansion. Danny DeVito's character confirmed that most of the ghost in that mansion at one point lived in or visited the mansion
Watcher in the Woods and Something Wicked this Way Comes were both made by Disney when they had the sense to push the envelope and make new comtent
My fourth grade teacher made us watch “Watcher in the Woods” in class (no clue why) but I remember absolutely loving it and Betty Davis while my classmates were terrified and traumatized 😂 We also watched “Something Wicked this way comes “ but I think that was a different teacher

I have an interesting fact that kind of ties in with Eddie Murphy's role in the 2003 movie. In Delirious, Eddie Murphy talks about how black people would never be seen in a haunted house movie because they would leave if anything supernatural occurs. That is one of his stand up routines.

Sorry. For the most part, anything Disney is an automatic turn off. It’s like they’re the #1 purveyors of crap...and don’t realize it. Just sayin.
I might watch this movie someday on streaming out of curiosity but for now I’m good with this review 🥰

I just saw it today at a pre screening. It was nice to see Lakeith do comedy. I went into the movie with low expectations. It was ok, deff funny. A lot of people were laughing but it’s not amazing.
He’s a great comedic actor (re: his character Darius on Atlanta)

When you guys were mentioning how they were some scenes that are too dark for young children to watch it’s rated PG-13 so unlike the original this version is more dark and accurate to the ride at the Disney Parks.

I was also confused as to why the ghosts are not haunting Jared Leto's house where the bodies are buried and then I remembered it was the 365 seances that caused the spirits to inhabit the house. . . not saying it was a great movie to write home about, but it was a pleasant summer diversion from the record breaking heat! Thank you for your reviews, I watch them every time I get home from the movie!
Have you guts heard of the gilm "how to talk to girls at parties" it's a john cameron Mitchell film that once i started watching it i was like omg this isnt a cookie cutter film with fringe idiosyncraties that might entice your interest. Thanks.

I am a HUGE fan of the ride so I am a bit biased in favor here. Though my love of the ride is also part of why I hated the Eddie Murphy version.
I really enjoyed the movie though, all the fan winks and nods worked for me.
It was fun, it was spooky, felt like a good introduction to horror for a younger crowd.
Your description of the movie is more interesting than the trailers, and the trailers are awful.

I saw the movie this evening. It didn’t feel like a movie made for adults. It seemed like a comedy all the way to the end. I was hoping for darker elements in the movie and I wanted some definite horror and I didn’t get what I was expecting.

The hatbox was the best part about the movie.
This is better than the 2003 version for sure. The acting here was CRINGE but Lakeith had the only real character arc worth paying attention to.

It sounds like the tones are all over the place. Like the narrative barely makes any sense. Also thank you for pointing out many creators do not understand Black women's hair. I see a lot of issues, just nonsensical styles considering the context.

I like the original. Eddie Murphy and the kids are hilarious and there’s good elements of fear. The Haunted Mansion is Supposed to be scary. The remake just seemed like way too many people and way too many things going on. Not gonna watch it. Most of the remakes are bad. The Lion King remake was decent, but not very memorable.
I like some kid’s movies but to me this was just bad

Completely positive portrayal in the whole movie was a white guy. All of the Black characters in that movie were portrayed pretty negatively. The movie felt to me like a racist self loathing bait and switch.
