You need to take a look at your cutoff switch, when going from neutral into gear it stalls the motor to make the shift easy, when its not tuned it will ground out your ignition and cause the engine to die when shifting.
my boat bogged out on me this weekend would idle and run great then got to a sand bar hung out for a while when shifting into gear and giving it throttle it would bog out. took gas cap off and it took off like a scalded dog
Interesting, must have a blocked breather. Where I live the wasps in summer will make mud nests in any little hole they can find, my chainsaw wouldn’t start & sure enough the exhaust was blocked with wasp nests.
It was a bit stiff, I lubricated all moving parts & tried getting some spray up the cables. That improved it enough to live with, you can also disconnect the cables & make sure everything in the motor moves freely- then you’ll know what part it causing the problem. Hope that helps
Just bought a boat it runs fine at idle put it in gear and give it lil or to much throttle and it, I had my uncle looking in the carb when I start it he said the jets was not spraying he tap it with a screwdriver and the jet start spraying but it still wasn’t enough to keep the engine on
Hi, sounds like a similar problem, best to pull carb apart, clean & even put a new gasket kit through it if you don’t know the service history. Also check clean or replace fuel filter & water trap if it has one..
I've got a problem where if I pump the throttle all the way forward, a small amount of fuel will squirt into the intake, enough to start the engine, but then it only runs for a few seconds. Fuel pump?
Could be fuel pump mate, be a matter of elimination. I’d start by disconnecting the line & put it into a bottle and see if it pumps fuel with nice flow, if that’s all working then time to pull the carburetor apart, might just be a stuck needle & seat.. let me know how you go.
Hi, it’s a 1999 5.0L Mercruiser, the 350 might have a different manifold carb setup. My other 350 is fuel injected which then the stalling is probably shift cable adjustment like the last comment suggested. Hope that helps..
Hi, haven’t worked on that engine but if it’s old school & not fuel injection, I’d start with the fuel system, check fuel filter, fuel quality, pull carburetor and clean all jets. Then electrics , spark plugs, coil, distributor leads etc. Depending on carby , the secondaries maybe blocked only giving half throttle, if it’s electric injection could be some limp mode etc
You just saved me over $4,000. Thats the estimate I received from the boat mechanic. My boat is now running better than ever. Thank you
Good work mate for having a go at it yourself, helping each other out with a bit on knowledge is what it’s all about.
Thanks you man you saved me a ton.. I had a boat mechanic try to rip me off to ... This why I never trust mechanic
Glad to hear it worked for you 👍 help me out with a hit of the subscribe button thanks mate.
Thanks man!!! I will try cleaning out my carburetor

Shift cables are good, was just carburetor, runs perfectly now
your belt seams abit lose? :)
Yes, all tight now thanks👍
When you push the throttle, does it feel stiff? mine is stiff, I was wondering if that's normal. thanks for the video, very interesting.

What kind of spray did u pit in the cables? (Break cleaner? Silcone spray?)
