      @@techknight3753 I think it is extremely important to acknowledge that they didn't do it because it was the right thing to do. They did it because they were caught lying. When they got caught lying the first time their response was to try and lie better. Only after getting caught twice did they actually do what would have been the right thing after the first lie.
      Going forward I will only be using 3rd party content until they do everything the dungeon dudes asked them to in this video AND start releasing quality content again. I loved spelljammer as a system but they really dropped 3 half baked books on us like we have all the time in the world to finish it for them.

      @TheSquareOnes ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@sci7zo This is all true, but it's also still true that this is a dream scenario by the standards of dealing with a massive corporation. Normally they'll just ignore protests and keep doing whatever they wanted to do in the first place, maybe finally giving way with some really shoddy compromise that still leaves things worse off than before. This time they didn't just agree not to the bad thing but actually made things even better than they were before the scandal broke, they obviously didn't do it out of pure good will but it's still worth highlighting just how unbelievably rare an outcome like that is.
      It's ok to still be upset at the idea of what almost happened and certainly you shouldn't trust them not to be shady again (nobody should have been trusting them in the first place, it's a business), but it's also ok to celebrate a huge and very unlikely victory for the consumers.

    Fairplay to all those who kicked back against this and got the result.
    Honestly, I didn't. Just didn't have the energy, life is mental enough right now, and I rationalised within the first couple days that... no-one can take my game away from me. The game that I play with my mates belongs to us and even if Hasbro tried to enforce the most draconian measures possible... no-one could stop us playing the game we wanted to play.
    That said, I do appreciate just how much of an attack this was for so many, especially Dungeon Dudes, and I'm really glad that the energy people DID put in has paid off. Well done.
    EDIT: Also wanted to add, thank you specifically to Dungeon Dudes for staying so measured, balanced and rational through all this. There are a couple of D&D TH-camrs who I felt were almost relishing the controversy because they were able to be releasing multiple videos, sometimes within the same day, of speculation and rumours and even a bit of hysteria at points. Jumping the gun, acting on unverified information. That sort of thing makes it harder for people to find out what's really going on and what they can do about it.
    But the Dudes stayed on-point, presented only verifiable facts and just worked to make sure people were as informed as they could be. And that's one of the reasons I think the Dudes are such an important force for good in the TTRPG online space.

      It did, however, create one of those situations where there's an important conversation that needs to be had but its hard to hear anyone for all the shouting. That's just the Internet, probably ain't changing anytime soon.

  • @FaraelHikari
    @FaraelHikari ปีที่แล้ว

    That message to WotC, so clearly laid out by Monty, is EXACTLY what I feel is so necessary to be put on the table, but we had yet to see anyone tell.
    I cannot thank you enough for your clarity of vison, and for voicing what is needed to actually build a future correctly - not just barely saving what was established decades ago, should never have been jeopardized like it's just been, and has indeed never been brought up to date with the current state of things.
    SRDs should evolve at the same pace the designers learn and refine the game, because if any improvement has been deemed necessary, then how can an SRD be justifiably left stuck in a lesser, lacking past? The accumulation of hindrances stemming from such a locked state only creates an ever widening gap of discrepancies and frustrations as time goes on, which are nothing but poison to the initial intent of supporting the creation of good content for the product.
    I truly, truly hope your message is heard, and acted upon. This just here is why you Dudes have a special place in my heart. 💙

    I'll always love Dnd, but I'm glad this experience taught us to take a step back and appreciate other options (I'm getting really into Starfinder now). Also, I didn't realize how biased I had been in favor of "official DnD material." I'm looking forward to seeing more content about 3rd party Dnd material, so I can better decide where else to put my money to support independent creators. There's so much out there, I need some help to sort through it all!

    I love you guys, and you guys really don't have to be apologetic about liking and wanting to play DND, the game isn't suddenly evil because of some upper level corporate decisions and people aren't evil for enjoying to play it.

      @DargorV ปีที่แล้ว

      Enabling those corporate aholes is what caused the debacle in the first place so yeah, after everything, still choosing to promote and give said corporate aholes is indeed evil. Well, more stupid and hypocritical than evil I guess

      @@DargorV they did not enable them. They stood up against them, now that they won there is nothing to stand up against anymore. If you boycot dnd now that weve won the only thing you are doing is denying yourself fun. Corporate is always going to be greedy you may as well stop playing any game that is not completely free. (Technically core dnd is completely free btw) our goal wasnt to stop greed, it was to prevent our game and hobby from dying.

      @chad hale god some pathfinder players are so blatantly obvious in their motives. Even if I was to stop playing dnd I wouldn't play pathfinder at this point just because of how incredibly zealous and toxic the playerbase seems to be. Not a single topic about dnd can be discussed without a pathfinder fanboy trying to convince people to stop playing dnd.

    I'm glad you took a second to shoutout the actual creative team at DnD. There's almost zero chance that people like Perkins or Crawford wanted this to happen. This was a great balanced video on this issue. I hope this mostly positive victory for our community inspires the general public to also find peaceful yet effective ways to battle the greed of big business in other industries as well.
    Food, housing, schooling and medical costs continue to sky rocket, big oil is profiting more than ever and instead of investing in better/more refineries to help the little guy with costs while making their own future operations go more smoothly big oil is just pocketing all the extra money. And the government is well the government.
    We have seen that community action combined with voting with our wallets and help from only a few people on the inside can gain us victories. And, these types of victories are so much better both for us and for these industries than rolling over and playing dead or giving up or running to the government for help. We did it, for now at least, with D and D. Now let's do it in other industries as well.

    I'd like to add one thing: while WotC may have broken the trust of the community, it is still worth commending WotC for their choice of putting the SRD up under the Creative Commons license. Just like vocalizing being upset at a business decision a company makes, it is equally important to let them know when they do a good thing. We want to *encourage them to keep making good decisions.*

      I don't understand how they broke it. They explained their rationale for the changes and apologized for creating concern, agreed to wall the changes back, walked them back, and then went even further. I'm glad to see so many people jumping stragiht to their pitchforks to tear down a corporation, but I feel like this is a bit of a missfire.

    Fantastic job Dudes cutting straight to the point here with the following statement: "I hope that the higher ups at wizard of the coast and Hasbro look at the situation very carefully and strongly consider committing now to releasing the next edition of Dungeons and Dragons with an SRD that is Creative Commons immediately upon the release of that new edition. I think that committing to that course of action now would go a long way to rebuilding the trust in the community." This couldn't have been said any better. 100%
