- It is an amazing historical phenomenon that no ayah (verse/sign) of the Qur'an has been commented on more than ayat An-Nūr (The verse of light).
In fact, it would be true to say that the vast majority of booklets that have been written on the Tafsir (exegesis) of the Qur'an are based on the exposition of ayat An-Nūr.
Over the past 14 centuries of Islamic Scholarship, more than a hundred treatises alone have been written on this one verse of the Qur'an by Scholars from every era.
Why is this verse so special that it is the most oft-commented verse in our Islamic heritage?
In this short video Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi sheds light on the meaning and profundity of this one verse that is famously known as ayat An-Nūr (The verse of light).

I learnt it by heart listening to your perfect recitation. I read it on my daughter’s grave. We lost her at the age of 24 in 2017. I pray with all my heart that May He have mercy on her and fill her grave with Noor. Please pray for my daughter Sophia Gulae Mahmood. May Allah keep her surrounded with His Noor till I meet her again. She was a great daughter, a loving sister, a loyal friend and a happy newly-wedded wife. I miss her everyday. Mom

"Noorun ala noor = a double light. The light of the Quran and the light of the purity of the heart of the believer. Both add to one another and that is why pure hearts find Islam even if they are non muslim. A pure fitrah is eventually guided to Islam because they have noor and then they see the noor of the Quran and the two are put together - "noorun ala noor"."

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp, the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things. In this lecture, for the remainder of the verse, Shaykh YQ only gives one main interpretation out of many others the scholars have given throughout our 14 centures of Islam. He stresses this point, in a lecture in this year, to show the vast knowledge that is out there just on this one verse alone. He also mentions, may Allaah protect him, that this verse is the one the scholars of Islam have commented on the most in Islamic history. Allaah knows best.

i love this mashalah
This is incredible ayat of Quran, there r so many hidden meanings.. Its about waves, refraction of light, super imposed waves, there is something about biology , olive oil which is free from east and west. Which needs no dependency on light ie sunrise and sunfall means free from photosynthesis..

The proper translation to the barren language we unfortunately speak, is luminescence. Even in that, is boundless wisdom.
but the verse mentions that الْمِصْبَاحُ (The lamp) it self یوقَدُ (burns) from the زَیتُ (the oil) of the زَیتُونَ (olive) of the شَجَرَةٍ (tree) and the , which لَا غَرْبِیةٍ یکادُ یضِیءُ (would almost glow) , so the light of the lamp does't differ from the light of the oil while it's light is driven from the oil and the oil it self starts to fully glow when placed in the lamp , in other words they are the complementary of each other and not apart from one another.

I met yasir qadi before once he came to my masjid called darul islah
There are three primary interpretations for the first part of this verse: "God is the light of the heavens and the Earth"
1) Allah is the source of guidance in the heavens and the Earth. The Quran and the Prophet are also called Nur.
2) Allaah creates a physical light in the heavens and the Earth. The sun and the moon are both called objects of light in the Quraan.
3) Allaah is light, in a way only he knows. We don't think too much about it; we take it at face value. The Prophet said this specifically in his tahajjud prayer duaa. There is also a hadith about Allaah having a hijaab of noor.
All three are valid, though the one that seems clear from the ending of the verse is the first one. Shaykh YQ said they are all valid interpretations. Allaah knows best.
