6:30 How careless is this description?
Did Korea invade Japan? Korea was the suffered country by Japanese imperialism in wartime. Japanese nagative sentiments toward Korean wave is completely came from their nationalism for returning colonial period and histrorical modificationism.
As a South Korean, everytime for seeing these careless and lazy western journalism easily make Korean Gov to the world's most competive Gov which has no impossible, is hilarious.
It's true that for someone unaware of Korean-Japan history. It would sound like the opposite of what happened.
It happened both ways, yet the old school people blame each other. The younger generation just wants to get a long.
It Because south korea still take issue of wartime force labours and comfort womans to japan, so nationalism in japan Fight it and negatif sentimen
@@Kickspot It didn't happen both ways, Japan invaded Korea over 500 times in a span of 1700 years, but Korea never invaded Japan. The only time was when Mongols were in control of Korea, Mongols recruited some Koreans in their army for Japan invasion campaign.

The Korean Wave started with a TV Series called Winter Sonata in 2002. Trust me I was riding that wave and I live in Australia, imagine how big that wave was in Asia at the time. Korea's soft power is unbeatable for almost 2 decades.

CNBC wants to cover all of that basis when they report on the kpop industry, because it’s true, there are many more negatives that they could’ve touched on in my opinion but didn’t. They honestly could’ve painted it as a bad picture just like they do the US entertainment industry, however both industries will continue to generate revenue and gain popularity no matter what.
I hope that correct truths will spread widely. Korean wave..It is a naturally occurring phenomenon..Korean wave began in Asia in the 1990s. In 2000, the popular Korean drama was exported to over 100 countries.According to date, most countries have been investing in culture for a long time.. This is absolutely natural. Korea has invested less in culture than the United States, France, Italy, Germany, Asian countries, China, Japan, and the Middle East. If it's not fun or of low quality, people don't approach it. For example, I have seen people who like Korean dramas mention the actor's acting skills, contents quality, and addiction.
Take a movie as an example..
Parasite director Bong Joon-ho actual interview Bong Joon-ho: "Support for the Korean film industry. There is a lot of focus on independent films, documentaries, and those areas. Most of these Korean films are invested, distributed, and produced by private companies, so I think the Korean film industry has its own health.”
Why not report the exact facts? Korea has much less cultural investment than most major foreign countries or Middle Eastern. However, foreign media ignore that. There is no deep reflection on Korean culture at all. The frame has not changed 10 years ago or now.
Agree. It's a very lazy report, although looks like an accurate report because of statistics figures. First of all, the Korean government's cultural budget is mostly support traditional culture and independent culture, not pop culture. Moreover, it is a sum of support for tourism and sports as well as culture. Secondly, the reporter showed the amount of South Korean pop culture exports, but more than half of them are from game exports. In fact, K-pop is only about 5 percent of Korean pop culture exports. Third, the Korean government has never set up or invested in K-pop and K-drama companies. So why does she say that the Korean government invested strategically in popular culture? It is true that the Korean government valued culture, but the Korean Wave was born first and the government recognized and used it later.
Very well said with the 1000% accuracy based on the fact about K wave. It is a naturally occurring phenomenon and users consume the soft power when it is attractive. Look at what chinese govt doing for spreading their culture with tremendous amount of money but it is not consumed yet.
The reason why they are trying to give credit to Korean government is becuz they can blame something else for their failure.

Very superficial. It's perhaps a typical western view of Asian countries - anything they have achieved are actually derived from government's totalitarian & somewhat oppressive push for success. But man, SK is a country with one of the most sophisticated democratic system on top of a sheer capitalism. If the gov was able to pull up the industry to the global level, rich nations as China and Japan could have done it decades ago.

People don't hate the good ones.. they hate the great ones. - Kobe Bryant
I see many valid points, but I'd like to stress something that is gravely overlooked, and it's the influence of TH-cam and social media on Kpop and K-entertainment. If there was no TH-cam, Kpop today would be nowhere near this popular. I can't stress this enough.
The hallyu wave of the 2000s were only limited to Asian countries because of its close geographic boundaries. The late 2000 early 2010s was the ideal point for its exposure into the world as TH-cam and social media started booming. The hallyu wave that was already flourishing rode the wave of TH-cam/social media and basically turned into a tidal wave that eliminated all boundaries.
But what's most important is that Korea just kept producing pretty amazing entertainment products, and it was a matter of time for them to be exposed and consumed internationally.
Yes, the actual "boom" occurred when Gangnam style reached 1 billion views. not many outside Korea, East Asia, or Hallyu fans knew what Gangnam is but they knew the song and eventually PSY thanks to YT.
In 10-20 years it will be the most normal thing to see men walk around in public with make-up on without them being considered gay. that's the impact korean culture will have on the world.

BTS were rejected for YEARS because there was no mold for what they were doing and now they are accepted because BTS created a new form of expression that was rare if not absent from the previous form of kpop. Nothing the bigger groups from the big3 did really helped BTS in fact what they created was exactly what caused them to be ostracized. They'd compare BTS to them and think BTS were nobodies who didn't fit the idol mold. I am not saying the others did nothing for kpop because they did, but they didn't really contribute anything to BTS or their success even those who managed to poke a hole for themselves in the western market.
Stop claiming Hallyu as a result of the governmental support. If it was possible, why the heck other countries didn't do that?
It is indeed due to the government who has been organising concert all over the world since the early 1990's. There use to be cheap concerts subsidised by the government with cheap tickets while advertising Korean brands in front of the concert halls.
The USA have done the same (investing in culture) since the 1930's at the beginning of the TV. They secured quota of American movies in theatre and music on radio in France for about 50 years.
France although spreads its culture with Alliance Francaise and different events subsidised by the government. As well as other countries.
Why the other countries don't do that? Because it's a risky expensive long term investment. It took about 30 years and billions of dollars to Korea to be recognise worldwide since the government started the Hallyu program.
Other countries have different priorities, different budget available, different lobby influencing their governments,... There is many reasons.
However, you can see that other countries do so through free international TV channels like TVE, NHK, DW, CCTV, TV5 monde, Arirang,....
All of our countries have to make choices and prioritise what they believe is best.
However, the government isn't the only reason why Hallyu has become so successful even tho 5.5 Bn USD per year does help a lot. The creations (talent) of the artists, the success of Korean brands like Samsung, LG,... wordlwide, and few other reasons are the other ingredients that have made the recipe successful which is although why it can't be replicated everywhere.
@@jiggythibs You know nothing about the case of Korea.
First of all, 5.5 billion dollars budget for culture ministry? It is a total budget of the "Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism," including support for artists(fine art), subsidies for low income family to enjoy cultural activities(usually tickets for museums, classical music concerts, musicals, plays), building and maintaining sports facilities, and helping tourism industries, and education of Korean language in foreign countries. Governmental effort does almost nothing with Halyu. Do you really think Gangnam style was a result of governmental subsidy?
@@jiggythibs Second, can you explain any connection between BTS and any governmental support program? Was there any concert to make BTS famous that I didn't know? And concert subsidized by government from early 1990s? There were nothing like Halyu or any Fandom to support any type of concert!
@@jiggythibs You might know about general case of national branding which utilizes pop-culture, and subsidizing it, but that was not a case for Korea or K-POP.
@@Sururuk I don't know why you are sensitive in regards of having a government promoting culture. This is something people should be proud of.
Having a government supporting culture and artists is a dream for many artists.
I've never said BTS was subsidised by the government and I don't see why they would when their label is on the stock market valued in billions of USD.
Regarding the support of concerts in general by the government, it is still going on and there is a budget specifically for that in 2021.
If you speak Korean, go on the moef website and see for yourself.
I think this video has upset many people including you since it sounds like BTS and the whole 한류 wouldn't exist without the gov support. So for this I agree with your comment. 한류 exists because of the artists not because of the money.
박태봉
Korean government didn't invest on any of K-pop companies😅 K-pop singers including BTS and Blackpink success is all by their effort and support of agencies which have nothing to do with korean government. Anyway we Koreans are very grateful for all people who enjoy K-pop and our culture🤍 Thank you(:
The amount of money that the Korean government gave to or invested on the Korean entertaint companies is exactly "0."
lol
Even if it did what's wrong with it
Korean wave is not a product of the government. Its a cultural phenomenon like the british wave naturaly born. The government got on the hypetrain later on to promote the country itself, its food and traditions. The usual promotion thing every country does. This video makes it seem like everything is meticuously planned and orchestrated by the government.
Yup. And its BTS impact on the country that is affecting EVERYTHING, so yeah, i kinda see how the govt could be affected. I hope their Cultural Ministers face doesnt get a cramp from smiling so much XD.
I like Blackpink BTS ❣️👍💙
well you got the last part right. XD
The way I was never a Kpop fan but Blackpink totally changed me. Loved other Kpop groups too but the Blackpink girls have my heart
same once i saw their performance at Coachella, I was mesmerized by them and became a fan.
I became a fan because back in 8th grade we had to do a dance to Kpop song and my group mates chose What is Love by Twice which at the time was new and after that I started liking BTS and BP and recently discovered many more throughout 2020 and 2021
I think Korean travellers, students in foreign countries kind of also contributed to this altogether. If anyone encountered Koreans during their trips, or in school, they would know that Koreans are hard working but also die hard drinkers and party-goers. Cause of that, I strongly believe this also made this Korean wave to strengthen its image and concept. Plus we are very open to experience, and fuse the foreign culture with ours.
I so hope this Covid crap resolves. S. Korea is the FIRST place i want to visit.....after i learn korean better...WITH MY NEW LEARN KOREAN WITH BTS KIT....WHaaaaaat?
Im sick of all these sad people who claim that the country's support has turned kpop into what it is today.
All things of Korea is fantastic...(Fact!)
except bp. Now..on the other hand..Mamamoo...reminds me of a female BTS
I live in Korea and I have never heard government supporting entertainment industry, they rather censor it.
Most popular groups like BTS, Blackpink, they got no help from government.
BTS came from a small company, almost bankrupt. Please learn about the industry before posting this type of stuff.
South Korea is only the country developed from poor country to developed country. and invested too much on education. and its result is just started to coming out recently.
Stop exaggerating the Korean government's role! It's social media that's been much much more influential. The government has been a hindrance in some cases.
Agree. Korean government is just a set of boomers
Korean government has nothing to do with this wave.
better learn first how hard Koreans fought against imperialism and military dictatorship to create today's democratic country by themselves. The goverment role was relatively little but people power in the long run. So many real stories and extreme sprits from those people's adversities and hardships.
K-pop succeed on its own not because of the government. government succeeded because of K-pop, not the other way around
Blackpink is the revolution of Kpop
South Korea 🇰🇷 can become the next global power 😇
They forgot about my boys Big Bang T^T
no bts without big bang paving the way
now how could that happen if they were a MAIN influencer of a Korean wave?
i think because of the scandals surrounding them it caused a uproar on their group reputation
all old kpop stans know, who made kpop.
Now understand this, BIGBANG can’t be fucked with. You know when Andre 3000 said there was Southernplayalisticadiilacmuzik before Stankonia? Same hits, ain’t no BTS without no BIGBANG.
bts haven't received any little help from Korean government, its citizens. they have literally built up all the way down to their success by themselves from the scratch
"K-culture was led by the Korean government"
This is what Japan is always saying.
The Japanese don't like to admit that people around the world have naturally fallen into Korean culture.
and yet today the korean government asked bts to resume their group activities to prevent hallyu wave from getting down.
@@daisies___ As expected, Japanese lie without proof
Yeh right?! People would have not known what Korean wave is without BTS. So let's give credit were it's due. And what so wrong in it. Their success and reach means other Korean bands, Korean dramas, cinema, culture, goods, tourism all thrive.
It has already spread before the BTS. Look for Kpop TH-cam from 2010. KMove, KDrama, KPop, KGame, and KBeauty have been around the world since before. Now there is also (K) epidemic prevention!
@J C Psy had 1 major hit 12 years ago and it reached #2 the others were nice, made ppl laugh, but certainly not cerebral. and it was a Hallyu ebb...with puddles. Those previous groups came from the big three, and the only ones they would help would be from their OWN company. no way would they share it with BTS. If you did any research you would know It was Seo Taiji who BTS liked, and they were from an agency called Bondo. So No. those other groups did jack for BTS or themselves. The true imact on BTS and the wave came from the OG HipHop groups in Brooklyn and Bronx.....It is WELL documented. But apparently not WELL read. So stop your group whining, stop being a frog and climb out of that well, get educated about what your talking about, and stop trying to white wash things.
Waoo and here we are Indians are who have an entertainment industry which is 100 years old and we are driving it to the ditch by our actions. Ohh now I want to develop our soft power in a better way.
I love Indian movies like Every Child is special, Three Idiots, Dangal etc.... They are also popular here in the Philippines
You can!!....do what big companies do. revisit the drawing board and find out what the barriers are and fix 'em. Good luck
@@TheTwil1 it is the filth called nepotism. Haritik Roshan, ranveer Kapoor alia bhatt all the big names are from big film families. People if true talent die a slow death here. And Indian movies nowadays has become shit and crappy. They need to change. Thanks for the support
The key driving force of 'Korean Wave' is a political freedom. Now, Korea become just example of democracy. In 1980s, Hong Kong ruled by British had a very strong soft power especially in Asia. But since 1998, Hong Kong lost their cultural superiority very rapidly as they lost freedom under China. The Current Korean society is full of freedom comparable to British Hong Kong. Furthermore, because Korea's economic power and population is much greater than British Hong Kong, Korean soft power has now prevailed over the whole world beyond Asia. In contrast, Japanese society has never had such a freedom.
Totally agree.
The Korean government is not an entertainment company. Why didn't China do that if it could gain a cultural advantage by doing so?
Korean culture and Kpop is just dope thats it .. period.. take a look at jpop or cpop.. you will know what i mean
The Korean Wave is caused by entertainers and fans, not by the government. Western media just don't want to acknowledge the emergence of natural soft power by interpreting it as if it was a scheme by the Korean government's initiative and investment. The Korean Wave is not owned by the Korean government, but by fans who cross national borders. Yes, the Korean government wants to increase GDP with it and is investing with it, but it has not become a game changer and rather follows it belatedly. The only thing the Korean government did well in the Korean Wave decades ago was to lift regulations and oppression that had remained since the military government of the past. Please don't devalue the fans' precious achievements. I hope you enjoy the change and development of culture, not the East and the West.
BLACKPINK IS THE BEST IN OUR COUNTRY💗
Kimchi is the best in your country
And Bulgogi
And you can keep them there too.
@@TheTwil1 thanks were grateful and thankful not fake ass autotune oops
This reporter exactly conveys what japanese media has been spreading about how Korean wave has been possible today. However, K pop or Korean Wave has never been directly supported in any but just they amended the law and some restrictions. So people get more chances to do their business in entertainment and bring higher competency and capability.
Japanese govt is the very one has brought every budgets for their entertainment industry, Cool Japan.
Nothing, no one can be perfect so of course Korean wave ( Hanyu) also accompany and bring with positive and negative things togather but sick of hearing that this culture comes from Korean government support and some strategy ,etc...... if world wide medias really want to know what is going on and the reason why korean wave beocmes popular, they should listen BTS and BLACKPINK songs and figure out what they want to say. Before Media report this kind of story, this is essential and basic manner for them.
You had me up until bp. WHY do ppl pair them togther. they are not even in the same league. You want a fantastic female group with REAL women check out MaMaMoo
Their success comes from working hard and steadily developing a healthy pop culture environment and trying to cater to market tastes.
I am very surprised by Korean movies. I think the quality and especially the acting ability of Korean actors makes Korean movies superior to many Hollywood movies. Who knows; soon they might just become the next Hollywood of the world. Also, imagine what could happen when the two Koreas become United!? With S Korean know how and abundant N Korean natural resources to include labor; United Korea will surely become a global power house of economy, culture and even military power. Believe it or not; S Korean military power is already rated 6th in the world. If it absorbs N Korean military, it could become 2-3rd military power. S Korea is already building an aircraft carrier. Upon completion; it’s naval power will surpass Japan.
Where are you getting your facts? Saying the first Hollywood movies were allowed in 1988 is a complete false fact. Koreans were enjoying Hollywood movies decades ago

So disappointed to see yet another inaccurate description of the relationship between South Korea and Japan.
Are Western countries saying Germany has very negative opinions toward Israel because of their history?
I wonder why not?
Because thats what you are doing to South Korea.
Its so ridiculous its not even funny.
I click because of Blackpink on the cover, but they’re only mentioned Blackpink just a second🥺 I mean why don’t they put BTS on the cover if they just wanted to talk about BTS achievement and Korea 🤷♂️
same reasons blinks make mvs about BTS and when we click on it all we get is bp. STOP RIDING BTS COAT TAILS.....they have had 4 collaborations with MAJOR US singers and they still couldnt do it. As a mater of fact we were all worried the major singers would be shamed ......Bts collabed with a song and brought it up from a freefall to #1..wait...that might be a good idea. that way ppl can compare the two and see what we mean.....IM CONFLICTED>

I have been researching about Hallyu for a long time, and everything said in that video is 100% accurate. Best video explaining Hallyu ever produced
@Bom Purply I’d like to know your point, why do you think it’s inaccurate?
dude korea goverment is not entertainment company.. gov can not ensured min salary for artists;; gov only can decided min salary for worker in korea(not only artist)
@Bom Purply you are entirely right, but you are talking about 2020. Korean entertainment needed help in the beginning, now it’s flying by itself.
The Korean government took Korean entertainment globally by many different ways (cultural centers / creation of Korean broadcasting company / creation of Korea foundation etc.)
If you want to learn more about how the Korean government created the Hallyu part of their soft power strategy, I recommend you reading
« The Korean wave, evolution, fandom and trans nationality », (especially chapter 4). It has been written by Tae-Jin Yoon and Dal-Young Jin who researched the origin of the Hallyu
I had the opportunity to interview them writing my PhD thesis on the matter, and I can tell you that the gov is 100% responsible for the Hallyu.
The real growth engine behind KPop I believe is 대학가요제 (pop competition from college students) which pulled in huge number of talents for singers and song writers. I mean, this was the turning point of South Korea's music industry (ran by MBC for the first time in 1980). Even in 90s, Korean pop culture was already very huge at least in domestic market. Also places like Hongdae (place where indie artists perform busking) or increase in popularity of hip hop or ballads in 90s all contributed the growth of kpop industry. I mean, I dont think these CNBC analysts analyzed a lot. They just stated the current facts as to how much it is successful but failed to explain what truly caused it.
I lived in Korea in the mid 1980s and saw many hollywood movies such as Terminator and Temple of Doom. They were an open economy much earlier than 1988.
From K-Pop, K-Dramas to Hallyuwood, I'm becoming a K-Addict 😅
K wave is the result of hard and smart work by Koreans who realize that competing with China and Japan to survive while having no natural resources is insanely difficult and inefficient. It is much easier to export Korean cultures than cars and TVs!
scandals come in hand in hand with any entertainment industry. so what's new?
Hallyu started by endless love and My girl of lee da hee and lee dong wook, That is for sure. Those korean comedy drama is the very foundation of Hallyu if you ask me.
Excuse me ma'am!. Not everything is bad, we was OK with western cultures, now you gotta accept Asian culture, it is the rising power for future economy.
It's time for Asians to shine bright around the world. Not just your western Pop culture.

All you can see in this video is the fact that CNBC is dealing with unfiltered, low-level information indiscriminately.
For blinks don't wast ur time there is one second talking about blackpink

Hallyu or Korean wave is thanks to the big 3 K-pop entertainment agency ie. SM, YG and JYP. Thanks to BTS Bighit is the new leading force of spreading Korean wave all over the world.👃👃👃

I don't really like bts but I love Manhwa and korean weebtoon.
You make it sound like Korean pop became successful mainly due to government's funding, which is not the case. Have you done research into Japanese government's campaign called Cool Japan? Japanese pop culture did not become as successful despite government funding. Your journalism says the Korean government invested in the culture ministry, but the culture ministry does not equate with K-pop. This is a poor piece of journalism. And your description that Japan has bad relations with Korea because of its colonial history is like saying Germany has bad relations with Poland because of the Holocaust. Do you know that Korea was the victim? It really seems like this reporter does not know what she is talking about.
