In Extremo is a german medieval rockband. They're using a lot of old instruments that are not common nowadays any more.

Awesome version of this song, it´s a really old swedish folk song, the lyric is about a christian man(herr mannelig) who´s approached by either a pagan sorceress or a female troll depending on interpretation, who wants to marry him but since she isn´t christian he wont have her. Things are a bit blurry cause in old norse "troll" simply meant magic or sorcery. There is another great version by the folk music group Garmarna, very different vibe but just as good.

The instruments are called shawms. They are double reed woodwinds and were all over. for example medieval europe.

    Thanks for that nice reaction.
In Extremo is one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Again and again. ;)
This video was recorded on the Loreley (near Koblenz, Germany) in 2015 on their 20th anniversary.
Many of the instruments are instruments from the Medieval-Times that no longer exist today and are made by the musicians themselves.
    Stay healthy and take care.
    Greets from Germany.

Thank you my friend. I love to see that you like it!
Yes I was there. The location is called „Loreley“
Its a big rock next to the Rhine in Germany.
There is a saying that on this rock a siren caused many ship accidents by singing so sweet, that the captains forgot to navigate and their ships sunk.
The flute-like instrument is called „Schalmei“ in Germany. In english it s called „shawm“.
In Extremo startet at small medieval markets and medieval festivals.
They played Wacken Open Air in 2006 and they are game characters in a RPG game called „Gothic“ . In one scene in the game the play this song „Herr Mannelig“
Greetings from Germany and stay safe!

Ah.. by the way... the language in this song is an old swedish dialect. In Extremo are Germans but they sing in german english gaelic and norwegian language

Seen the, twice, amazing live. Their older albums, before 2008 were in foreign languages ( french, italian, spanish, icelandic and many more), sometimes dead one ( like latin).
Among the weird instruments they play, you can find "huge xylophone", harp, hurdy gurdy, and things from the bombards family ( the "flute" in here)

  • @00Jess_M
    @00Jess_M 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

That instrument is a Schalmei (Shawm in English?), I believe.
I wish Beyond the Black would upload more videos of their recent online acoustic show. The singer of In Extremo was there for one song and I think you would like it. So I still have to think about what to request next. 🤔 I just now there will be a "next" BtB 😁 Also thinking about another Medieval band (I actually saw live), since you seem to really like those.

Just wanted to add that this is an old traditional Swedish folk-song. I believe it was written sometime in the 1700's something. I've understood that this is a German band - and he do actually sing it in Swedish!
Great interpretation! Energetic and innovative...simply great!
    Cheers from Sweden!

I saw them way way back for the first time at a local village in front of like 50 people. I was immediately sold as I had never heard something similar. They already had that song. Seen them a few more times, but they went more and more mainstream. I really like their older songs. Great live band though

Scandinavian medieval song.. All the instuments (blow instuments) are medielval. The band are from Germany (in Europe... if there is a small town in Iowa called Germany), Germany, the old one... before 1600 ;)

I was there. It was the 20th birthday of the band. 2 days with different bands and In Extremo as headliner. They played 2 days for about 2.5 hours and they played only one song twice.

Expounding on others comments - The reed instrument is a Shawm (English translation, other languages have different names for it), an ancestral instrument to the modern Oboe. Also similar to the pipes on modern bagpipes. The song "Herr Mannelig" is a sweedish folk song that tells of a troll propositioning marriage to a noble knight, giving him gifts, and he eventually turning her down. This version is from their 20 year festival (20 Jarre). I would love to see them in concert
