Dear Sir, Thank you and Vesey’s for this excellent and informative video on beans for the home garden. I appreciate this type of video very much. Sincerely, Larry Clarence Lewis London, Ontario.
As a Russian who knows only the word "beans", I would appreciate an explanation of, say, why snap beans are called "snap", how you cook them, how different varieties of beans are prepared. I appreciate your detailed explanation of what types of beans are there. Thank you.
How long does one harvest grow and when should i start another growth? My first garden and I grew a pole bean. Also, what's the best food to feed as they grow? I see that mine are fading in color. ty
Hi, Maturity dates for beans vary between 50-70 days. We suggest using Garden Inoculant when planting beans to increase your bean yields. Inoculant contains rhizobium bacteria which improves soil fertility, root systems and maximizes plant growth and yield. As the plants grow you can use a blend of 5-10-10 fertilizer, which provides nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, the three most important nutrients that beans need.
my gdad was from up in appalachia and he always grew white half runners. my guess was because it takes up little space while having a high yield . i carry on the tradition but i might try some bush beans as well
Thanks is for your video! Can you please tell me what bean plant that yields what they call "great northern bean"? I've had trouble finding this out and would appreciate the help!
Just buy dry beans from the store and plant them. They'll grow and cost way less than seed beans, although their germination rate may be lower than usual if they're old beans. Sometimes I sprout mine in a bowl before planting them to ensure germination. Otherwise, just look up "great northern bean seeds" in your search engine. I know you posted this question 10 months ago and I am just seeing it now. I believe I read the one you are talking about. I believe it's what the Amish brought to Pennsylvania. I read about it in a gardening magazine. Unfortunately, I cannot think of name right now but I will see if I can find it and get back to you.
There are a dozen more varieties of beans BTW, the yellow ones are more tender, the flat ones are crunchier and the huge kidney beans are very commonly used in North African cuisine!! Compared to all that amazing variety, green beans are totally plain !!!

Do humming birds like those red flowers on pole bean
a big thing to consider is your climate, most pole beans don't actually have time to produce as much as a good bush bean where I am.

you forgot to mention that runner beans are perennial so you don't need to replant them every year if you don't want to.
