Conversations That Bring Life
We laugh and we suffer. We offer encouragement and express concerns. We agree and debate. We communicate to complete tasks and coordinate schedules. We talk and make plans. We contemplate life together.
Conversations are a part of life and each interaction is as unique as the person we are talking to.
In the book of Colossians, Paul and Timothy advised Christians to live wisely, especially among non-Christians, and make the most of every opportunity (Colossians 4:5). They keep saying:
“Let your word always be with grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to respond to each one.”
Colossians 4:6 KJV
That sounds good, but what does it really mean to be “with grace” and “seasoned with salt”?
Always with grace.
Grace is a free and undeserved gift. So even if someone is difficult or disagrees with our opinions, we can still communicate with kindness and respect. Just as we want others to be kind to us in conversations, we should also be kind to them. Grace demonstrates unconditional kindness, and so can we.
Seasoned with salt.
Salt is an essential mineral, used for preservation and seasoning. As followers of Christ, we are compelled by His love to be living preservers of His history as we passionately share His message. Our conversations don't have to be "without salt," we can use our God-given personality to draw others into His love.
Does this mean that we should be people who seek to please others full-time? Or that we will have all the answers? Of course not. But as 1 Peter 3:15-16 says, “But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts. Always be prepared to respond to anyone who asks for a reason for the hope that you have. However, do this with meekness and respect." (NIV)
It's not just what we say, but how we say it. And in our daily conversations, we can honor Christ by speaking intentionally and with grace.
So today, when people avoid a conversation with you, consider how you can honor them and point them to Jesus. Is there anything that is holding you back from being a “full of grace” and “seasoned with salt” person?

Clay sculpting is really harsh on his hands. He’s still recovering, please be more understanding and give him more time. Besides, it’s good to try out new things.
