The game's end makes it seem like they never planned a sequel. Either they never planned one or were completely overwhelmed by the game's success.

its still stupid, because Kratos never really wanted the throne. Even after God of War 1, he abandons the throne to find his brother. He only uses the God of War title and the powers that come with it to wage war against other gods.

Funny how they refused to do what they promised, and then made him immortal so he can live forever with the memories that haunt him. Do you really wonder why the man became so homicidal towards the gods?
The gods did as they promised, lol. Kratos was promised to be forgiven of his sins, and that’s what he got. In no point did the gods said they will erase his nightmares.
To top it all off they were responsible for the disappearances of his mother and brother who he thought was dead for years.

Thats where the details are fun, the gods never actually promised to free him from the memories, only forgiveness for his sins. The story behind the God of War stores centers around hope. Even though they fooled him, they gave Kratos hope that there would be an end to his haunting memories.

Notice how Krato's personality hadn't been fully figured out. Throughout this game, he gets angry but never the same full-on aggro that he gets in later games. He's softer-spoken, articulate, and when the Gods deny his request, he doesn't explode and instead chooses to take his own life. Inversely, you could say that this was the calmer and more respectful Kratos that was buried underneath years of anger and, after the ending of GOW3, it finally returned when it came time to care for his son.
Despite being a Dad Game, god of 4 did good on stepping back on the flanderization... even if it was too far in the other way.

Kratos was calm because he trusted the Gods to take his visions away. When they doesn't, figures out the truth about his father, the curse on his mother and the kidnap on his brother, and after Zeus betrayal, Kratos becomes a walking rage nuke.

In this gow he travels to the highest peak in all of Greece to run away and escape from his past.
In gow(2018) he travels to the highest peak in nine realms and accepts who he is and embraces himself and stops dwelling on his past to build a better future.
Love the resemblance and irony, truly shows how much Kratos has changed.

Hades didn't do shit angaist Persephone while she and Atlas were about to destroy everything considering he rules the VERY PLACE THAT HAS NO SUN ( togheter with Death's Domains), forcing Kratos to push his daughter away and become a monster once more, and yet still Hades hated Kratos for taking away his bride when she was about to destroy everything.
Athena and Ares took Kratos brother away while BURNING SPARTA because some oracle said that a marked warrior would destroy Olympus, and when Kratos finally saved him, Thanatos took his life away, making Kratos entire quest pointless.
Zeus cursed Kratos mother in a way the if she told Kratos who was his father, she would become a monster... And she did, making Kratos KILL HIS OWN MOTHER, oh, and btw, why tf was she locked in Atlantis? And speaking of, Poseidon sent Scylla and his tritons to kill Kratos in a big brain move because bothering the god killer is a good idea...

I love that vestiges of more modern warfare were also in Kratos' vision as God of War. Like I know he's a god so time shouldn't be beyond him, but after seeing an ancient setting for so long and then seeing guns and planes, it just amazes me still.
The guy literally kills a hydra and then proceeds to climb a titans back for 3 days with no food die and then go to hell come back become giant and kill a god I am pretty sure technological advancements would not be very surprised him.

Memories can't just disappear, they stick with you for life. Erasing them would be easy but the emotions and turmoil from it will stay. And besides he also has the ashes stuck on him as a constant reminder.

Athena became corrupted when she became a ghoast. She had good intentions in the first and second game. The problem was the gods of Greece used Kratos for their own benefits and only reward him with something he never wanted. All he wanted was the memories of the murder of his family gone but the gods went back on their word. Thats the reason why Kratos became the consumed with revenge, hate and rage. He stopped having nightmares when he was finally able to forgive himself during his final battle with Zeus

I love how Ares never begged for his life and only tried to justify his efforts in order to make Kratos a better warrior. Kratos understands hence why he replied "You succeeded" and proceeded to end him because that is what he came for in the first place. It was even more solidified as he himself became a god when he accepted the throne, and ultimately became the god of war.

That entire piece of dialogue has to be my favorite.
The ending to most people makes it seem like there wasn't supposed to be a sequel. But hear me out, he's still the God of War in Greek Mythology at the end of GoW 3. But there were very slight hints at Kratos being Tyr, which is the Norse God of War as well. Remember what it said about Tyr, "He traveled to different lands and learned different cultures" and he's also the only one who could use the Unity Stone properly. Also every time he activates the Realm Room, he looks at his hand and it lights up with the War symbol of Greek mythology, and that travel room was built in Tyr's honor, so why does it light up a Greek war symbol on a guy in a room that was built in honor of the Norse God of War? Now THAT, would be a trip. Learning that Kratos is the God of War in all 4 of the mythologies shown on Tyr's panel when he looked the top right one being the greek symbol. Would be SOOOOO sick. But that's because I have like 20-30 more years of mythology games to look forward to with Kratos if that's the case.
AbrazivOtter That would not make any sense. Because Kratos didn't knew of the existence of the other gods. Also, Tyr wanted to make peace between the races, Kratos is not the type of guy who tries to make peace.
Tyr is the god of law and justice so no.
They changed their mythology for game puposes. And he can still evolve into Tyr. I mean the midgard worm is supposed to be the child of Loki(Atreus) so we might see some time travel. I could see him ending as Tyr as a kind of redemtion.

SpecterX Ylanan you can’t blame him. It all started with Ares who deserved it. Tricked Kratos into killing his own wife and daughter. Kratos got his revenge but Zeus couldn’t leave him alone . He had to take Kratos’ powers which forced Kratos to murder his own dad . Which ended the gods. Moral of the story . Don’t fuck with Kratos
I didn't really think he was sympathetic in god of war 4 (well besides interactions with his son but it's obvious why he is sympathetic with his son) a lot of the choices Kratos makes in God of War 4 are because of his son he has responsibility now and doesn't want his son to be the blood thirsty monster that he was so he has to take a less violent route or do things that might seem out of character when comparing him to the past 3 games
