    If your students are more interested in this topic, there is an episode of NPR's Planet Money Podcast called "#918 - The Day of Two Noons" and the implementation of time zones in the US in the 1880s because of railroads. Gives some great background on this idea.
    Also, there are two professors from Johns Hopkins that are proposing Universal Time. Meaning, whenever it is 10:00pm here for me in the US, it's also 10:00pm for you in Australia. Biggest difference - the sun may rise here in the US at 10:00pm, I go to work at 11:00pm. Eat lunch at 3:00am. Come home at 7:00am. Sun sets at 9:00am. But for you in Australia, the sun may be rising at 5:00am. The idea is that we are all on the exact same time. We would just have to adjust to our "schedules" changing. Interesting read on the topic!

And also a key factor for the students to focus on his lecture is interest . If a student doesn't have any interest , that student is definitely not going to remain focus .
    PS : That 8 and 3 quarter thing is caught me by surprise .
    I guess he must be a good teacher .

    While UTC does stand for Coordinated Universal Time, it doesn’t do it directly, which yes is odd. UTC actually stands for the French translation. CERN is another example of this. They are acronyms for things that we know in English yet what actually stand for are in their French translations

  • @fireflyrobert
    @fireflyrobert 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The official abbreviation for Coordinated Universal Time is UTC. It came about as a compromise between English and French speakers. Coordinated Universal Time in English would normally be abbreviated CUT. Temps Universel Coordonné in French would normally be abbreviated TUC.

    The main reason they created time zones is because of the railway. If it was leaving from the east coast of the US, it would actually end up arriving on the west coast much later than the time stated.
    And that's actually why trains in Chins never show up on time, because the country has only one time zone.

    I still can't understand why North and South Koreas have a 30-minute difference between each other when they are in the same zone and were in fact one country before.
    China has a unified time while the United states has 4.

    • @carultch
      @carultch 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      China has a unified time zone because of Mao Zedong's authority. There are rebel Uiygurs, who use Kashgar and Urumqi time zones that make more sense for their location, behind the back of Chinese government. Tibetans follow Beijing time, but events tend to happen at a shifted time from when you'd ordinarily expect them, for obvious reasons.
      The contiguous US has 4 time zones, because it spans across four theoretical time zones. Generally, the time zone borders occur at state lines, although there are exceptions like Nebraska, where they deliberately avoided state lines to aim for regions in the middle of the state to avoid population centers like Omaha. The US also has a time zone that is GMT-9 for Alaska, and GMT-10 for Hawaii, plus several others for the territories.

    • @carultch
      @carultch ปีที่แล้ว

      Equilibrium roughly speaking, means balance. It means for all the causes that there are to cause a system to change one way, there are also enough causes to change the system the opposite way, and on net, it isn't changing at all.
      As an example, a closed container with water, which is both evaporating and condensing. In the long run, it reaches a condition where all the water that evaporates, is equal to the mass of all the water that simultaneously condenses. The amount the water level changes, is no change at all.

    Or you could just learn where the sun would be at noon wherever you live.
    International time zones are more complicated than time has to be. As he said, the whole midday thing breaks down completely at the poles. That's why militaries and international agencies use certain time zones no matter where they are on the Earth.
    Also, Greenwich is spoken as Grin-idge because of the local dialects that named it. It is an English thing not an English thing. 😄

    We should all have the local solar noon as the middle of our business day and all use the same clock time, based on the International Date Line. Get rid of Daylight Savings (stupid idea).

    • @carultch
      @carultch ปีที่แล้ว

      Then you will end up with a continuous spectrum of infinite time zones, and you'll have to keep track of exactly where someone else's longitude is, in order to know when to arrange a meeting with them.

    • @akoponen
      @akoponen ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carultch It is not as if we don't already have to adjust for folks having different times that they are available due to their business hours being different. And I hardly think 'exactly' will be required for most purposes.

    • @carultch
      @carultch ปีที่แล้ว

      @@akoponen I don't agree. I think time zones work much better when the clock is only adjusted once per hour's difference, rather than by 1 minute every 25 km you drive to the east or west. Then you'd have to keep track of exactly how far the difference is in longitude, when trying to schedule long distance meetings.
      Imagine trying to schedule a conference call between Boston, New York City, and Atlanta. Boston is 4 degrees east of the -75 degree meridian, NYC is 1 degree east of it, and Atlanta is 9 degrees west of it. As it currently stands, all of these places are in the same time zone, and it is reasonable for them to be in the same time zone, since their longitudes all round to the 75 degree west meridian. But Atlanta would be 50 minutes behind Boston, and NYC would be 10 minutes behind Boston, if we had to adapt to everyone's exact local time.

    • @akoponen
      @akoponen ปีที่แล้ว

      @@carultch Since everyone would be using the SAME 'time zone' it would be easier. Just say a specific time. Yes, for some it may be in the morning and in the afternoon for others...presumably folks would mention if the specified time was outside of normal business hours at their location.

    • @carultch

    Why we have time zones is not because the round earth is to blame, but because we need to discretise the earth into ‘bands’ that roughly corresponds to country borders so that people living in it can pretend they r living in exactly the the same longitude, just to facilitate time synchronisation, while in fact they are not.
    In ancient times, time zones were not necessary. All timekeeping was based on local time, ie position of the sun locally, because in ancient times ppl don’t frequently exchange with other ppl by more than 150km east/west (ie one hour, or 1/24 of a day) apart. Modernity necessitated time zone.
