In 1959 HH the 16th Karmapa, head of Kagyu sect of Vajrayana Buddhism escaped Tibet (official seat of Karmapa) at the face of Chinese invasion of Tibet and came to Sikkim and chose Rumtek to be the official seat of the Karmapa outside Tibet and established the Rumtek Monastery. HH the 16th Karmapa passed away in 1981 leaving behind four Heartsons viz. Shamar Rimpochela, Tai Situ Rinpochela, Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpochela and Gyaltsab Rinpochela. The administration of Rumtek monastery and in fact the entire Kagyu sect fell under their responsibility. In 1992 Tai Situ Rinpoche produced a prediction letter left behind by HH the 16th Karmapa predicting the circumstances of the reincarnation of the 17th Karmapa and recognised Orgyen Trinley Dorjee as the 17th Karmapa in 1992 however Shamar Rinpoche objected this and two years later recognised Thaye Trinley Dorjee as the 17th Karmapa leading to the Karmapa controversy. So at present we have two 17th Karmapas both of them equally popular among their followers.This is the controversy Rinpochela is talking about. But we are so fortunate out of all the places HH 16th Karmapa chose Sikkim to be the seat-in-exile of Karmapa. There was once a huge skirmish between the supporters of Tai Situ Rinpochela and Shamar Rinpochela on the issue that which 17th Karmapa should come and stay at Rumtek. Ever since then the security of Rumtek Monastery has been looked after directly by Govt of India through the ITBP if I am not mistaken, since the matter of Rumtek Monastery is of international concern for India. Two Karmapa Lama claimant isssue resulted in some infighting within Karma Kaghu followers. As such both Karmapa couldn't come to the Rumtek as Central Govt Blocked the entry of Karmapa.
