I bought my first Spyderco product (the double-stuff) from a fair in Washington State where they had a booth. This was well before they started making knives. They only did sharpening stones, back then. I believe it was 1985. I still have it and it still does an amazing job.
Yeah, I've seen people do that and I thought about it but did not want polishing compound getting inside my backpack. The Double Stuff will get a knife sharp enough that for travel use I figured it was good enough.

You can also rub a little compound on the leather to make a complete travel kit.

The leather's not great for a strop. Too suede.
To clean the surface try an pencil eraser.
