    If your contemplating on purchasing an Andy Taylor Flugehorn but don't know what each model sounds like then you've come to the right place! I recorded two takes: 1st take with a "Phat Boy" model and the 2nd take with a "Standard" model. They are pretty darn close in my opinion but you can decide for yourselves.
    I'm using a Dennis Wick 4FL mouthpiece with The "Phat Boy" model & an Andy Taylor standard mouthpiece on the "Standard" model.
    No post-processing on the tracks, recorded directly to an Olympus LS-10 2-Trk with a TC Helicon VoiceLive 2 effects processor.

    One of the best flugel/trumpet tones I've ever heard and this applies to BOTH instruments.
    Also, this has to be my favorite comparison video -- the way the two instruments were seamlessly compared should be a guide for other such comparison videos.

    Bill, I am planning or retiring from work later this year and have picked up the trumpet for the first time since college. I am researching flugelhorns and came across your post here. I can't tell you how much I love your sound. This is exactly the sound that I have in my head, the one I am trying to get out of the bell of my horn. I know that buying your horn won't make me sound like you, but at least I will know that with practice it is possible that I might get there some day. You are an inspiration - and a lot of fun to listen to. So, I will save my pennies for a new horn and start practicing about 3 hours a day. When I get discouraged, I'll come back to this post. Thanks for sharing.

      Hey Roy - 2 years later and I find myself in a similar boat. How are you going? I'm thinking of selling my soul for one of these and burning it up for an hour or two a day to get the chops back. It's been about 10 yrs and I've worked hard the last few months with my trumpet, practising with my son as he plays his eupho. Bliss! I hope you've been enjoying it if that's the direction you've taken! Cheers from Australia - Dave

    Got my first flugelhorn about six years ago. First step is to stop thinking like a trumpet player. It's a different instrument with it's own particular challenges. But when your horn starts to sound kind of like this, that's good stuff. Getting there slowly. (And don't ever expect to get even close to what Mr. Colletti's got going) Great video. Thanks.

    I just got one of those Denis Wick 4FL mp's since Bill recommended it. Be advised, this has a huge impact - really mellows the sound. Makes a night/day difference on my flugel. Unless you're playing a similar mp I doubt you're going to a similar sound to what he's getting here. Plus I believe aspects of Bill's playing approach make a lot of the nice fluffy, velvety sound happen.

    • @BillColletti
      @BillColletti  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DizzyJazz The Standard (to me) has a smoother tone, perhaps darker than the Phat Boy. On my gigs I only use the Standard when I'm in a restaurant and have to play quietly. The Phat Boy can cut through on Pop songs more so than the Standard. Especially, when you push it. The Phat Boy has a split personality. Mellow when you need it to be or the opposite when you blow harder. I believe this was the intent when Andy Taylor conceptualized it.

  • @johnpiggins4288
    @johnpiggins4288 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The raw-brass finish of the Standard is particularly fine; I would like to have such a fluegel, just lying around ornamentally, and airily blow a few phrases now and then.

    • @BillColletti
      @BillColletti  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aj, I didn't intentionally position the mouthpiece on my lips that way. it's where it falls naturally. I'm in the process of realigning my upper/lower teeth with invisalign. I was worried at first that it would affect my tone and positioning of the mouthpiece. So far so good, I'm 3 months into the process and no difference (yet)!

    What wonderful instruments, and beautifully played. I've finally found the flugelhorn sound I've been waiting to hear. I wonder if the different mouthpieces may have contributed to the slightly different tones?

    • @BillColletti
      @BillColletti  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rob, the mouthpiece definitely affects the tone. My goal here was not to compare the tone difference between the horns but was to demonstrate that by using two different horns and mouthpieces you can achieve the same tone results or at least get close to each other. On the Taylor Phat Boy I used a Dennis Wick 4FL because it is a bright sounding Flugel. The DW 4FL tames it down. I used a Taylor MD Flugel mouthpiece on the Taylor Standard Flugel which BTW was the mouthpiece it originally shipped with. The Standard model has a much more mellow tone than the Phat Boy. If I used the DW 4FL on the Standard it would almost sound muffled. Thanks for listening!

    Wow, incredible playing! Love flugelhorn, don't play it though. I prefer the sound of the Standard in this sample. @@BillColletti I have a different flugel that takes a Yamaha shank and settled on a Warburton 4fl which is a little more comfy and has almost the same tone. Love your sound and I try to get the same...now if I could play like you! HAHA! Excellent work!

      @@robturchick7416 Thanks! I'll be posting a new video tomorrow demonstrating my new CarolBrass large bore (.465) Cornet. I'll be using a Flugelhorn mouthpiece with an adaptor to fit the cornet. Nice tone with it. It's made with a 5 1/4" red brass bell. Stay tuned...

    Hi, William. I really prefer the sound of the standard model because the "Phat Boy" sounded more muted, seemed to have less resonance, at least judging by this recording. BTW, which one do YOU prefer and why?

    I think the Phat Boy is more buttery sounding. The Standard sounds great, but has a slightly sharper fuzz to it.

      I totally agree. :)

      William Colletti Different mouthpieces...are they the same size? The Standard mouthpiece looks broader like a half-mega tone, while the Phat looks new and shallower.

      They are fairly close in size
