During the war, the Imperial General Staff put out an edict stating that the Pipes were not to be played in battle. When Lord Lovat was reminded of this, he said "Yes, but we're Scotsmen, so that rule doesn't apply to us."

A bit Dummkopf. Great respect for Mr Millin from Bavaria near Germany. Thank you and all the men you inspired with your bagpipe giving me the opportunity to live in freedom.

@@maxwellfan55 Well, as the last veterans are now leaving us, it seemed to me the right thing to write it. UK and .de as allies: I agree. Cheers from Bavaria.

Incidentally, the first allied soldier killed on D-Day was at Pegasus.
    Lt. Herbert Denham "Denny" Brotheridge.

He didn't even need too go, his wife was expecting and Major John Howard advised him not too but he did anyway, both Howard Mrs Brotheridge felt it for the rest of their lives and the child didn't learn of it for years.

If these heroes dont bring some sort of admiration empathy and respect and hit your gut and make the roof of your mouth sore from holding back the tears, you don't belong in Britain.

What a lovely man. Credit to the human race. True what he said that he was in no rush to fight with anybody it was more a desire to get off the boat that was making him feel sea sick. The Germans thought he was quite mad and didn't shoot at him.

    The Mad Piper's Complaint
    Were I a warrior
    I'd pipe by your side
    wade the shores of Normandy
    to a soldier's death
    Were I a poet
    I'd write songs
    of highland lads
    piping savage beauty
    and love
    an old man I am
I hung my pipe on the wall
    my fingers fumble
    fading faces
    of friends forgotten
    on foreign lands
    endlessly
    a tingle down my spine
    a tear
    these I can

And the *real* reason they didn't shoot him was they were afraid that if they did the pipes would get angry and attack them. Wild bagpipes make a wolverine look like a harmless kitten. 😁
