    Special Thanks to my Patrick for graciously sharing his experiences studying here. We see so many videos of retirees, digital nomads, and English teachers as we generally have the most time to be making youtube videos but Bangkok is full of people making a living and staying here for many more reasons. This is just one story. There are also many expats working for multinational corporations way too busy to be making vlogs but if you know anyone willing to share their experiences please contact me!

    Good job with this interview. Most exchange students here in Thammasat Ta Phra Chan Campus are either a student in special 1 year program or an exchange student. It is very interesting to hear the perspective of foreign student who studied here full time. The cost for LLB is high despite being in Government University is due to it being an international program. For example, for LLB it cost around 100,000 baht per semester (depends on how many class you registered). As for normal law program in TU, it cost around 14,000 baht per semester (could be more depends on how many class you registered). If I remembered correctly, you are required to take Thai class in the university if you are a foreigner (unless they changed that) which could be beneficial for foreigner. But not being fluent in Thai won’t make your study in international program more difficult since all the faculty staff can speak English. All the studying material are also in English. You have access to multiple libraries with English book section. You also have access to e-library with English books from around the world. As for Wifi, the university has a free one for you. You can use the fully air conditioned library to relax, sleep, use restroom and surf the internet for as long as you want (they even have movie room for you to watch movie for free). For LLB that Patrick is currently studying, they even have their own law library.
    You can also walk to Khao San road for party in weekend or take express boat in Chao Phraya into other major tourist area like Yaowarat (Chinatown), Asiatique, Central Pier for BTS, and many many temples. In another word, you are pretty much covered in both academic and lifestyle area.
    What Patrick said about TU being the top law school in Thailand is true (one of the tops in terms of academic, the top in terms of history). There are three faculties that is very famous here in Thammasat which are Economic, Law, and Political Science. Also, Thammasat have been expanding their international programs quite a lot too, Law is just one of them. There are other famous government universities that would make it easier for you to find job in Thailand like Chulalongkorn (ranked 245 worldwide, ranked 50 in Asia according to QS World University Rankings), Mahidol and many more. You can also use this bachelor to continue your study in Master or even PhD at many international universities both in Asia and others. There are plenty of opportunities here. You are not limited to just Thailand.
    Also, I recommended you to review Thammasat Rangsit Campus since that is their main campus. It is much bigger than Tha Phra Chan. The lifestyle of student there is totally different from us here in Tha Phra Chan. It also has a very big stadium because it is used to host 1998 Asian Games. I also recommended you interview foreign students at SIIT faculty (Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology). For some reason, that faculty seems to have a very high number of foreign students.
    Assumption University is also very famous private university for foreign student too, especially in BBA (Business Administration). Last time I was there, they have around 1,000 Chinese students there. AU also has a very good reputation in business sector in Thailand. Many got hired by business firm before they even graduated.

    Just to clarify, he's not paying much more than Thai students in the same program (the difference is just 10,000 THB/300 USD per semester). It seems more expensive than most average college tuition fee in Thailand because it's an international program.

    • @livetravelasia
      @livetravelasia  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but compared to America it’s very affordable. Something that’s interesting to us is how government schools are more expensive than private because it’s always the other way around in America

    • @Jeelee00
      @Jeelee00 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@livetravelasia Because that's how they make money for the school. Normal programs are usually cheaper than the private university's (10-20k per semester or even year.) It's just very competitive to get into those schools, especially Thammasat's laws or business schools. And they teach in Thai (although with English materials.) So you don't really have a choice if you can't understand Thai quite well to choose international one instead. But in Thailand, people compete to get into normal programs in government schools because they are more reputable and cheaper.

    Patrick clearly made a great choice in terms of life experiences and I believe that type of focus more frequently leads to happiness than focusing on finances. However, if his goal of attending university in Thailand was primarily financial (minimizing costs and maximizing job opportunities) it might have been an unwise choice. Yes, US universities are overpriced and lead to huge debt. However, the opportunities to attend professional schools (Law, Medicine, Business, etc) in the US is greatly diminished with a Thai degree vs. a US degree. US professional schools are expensive, as well, but in the long run, they put you on a dependable track to financial success. The point I'm taking forever to get to, is that by saving money now, he is limiting his opportunity for financial success in the future. You get what you pay for. Similar to his story about apartments vs. condos in Thailand. The return on investment by paying more for the condo was worth it. I recommend 2 years of junior college, 2 years university (or join the military for four years and the GI Bill leaves you 100% debt free after receiving a university degree), teach abroad for a few years to gain life experiences/language skills/chip away at debt, and then attend a US professional school. Or, say to hell with the rat race and be content with a simple lifestyle.

    The problem with international undergraduate programs in Thailand is that there are not lots of options from top ranked universities, which are usually public universities. There are more options offered by private universities (similar to for-profit colleges in the US, easy to get in and graduate). Most of these private schools are mediocre - not terrible (with few exceptions for some programs) and never appear in any international rankings.

      This uni offers only 4 years program in Thai business law in english instruction. The first 2 years mainly focus in Thai law and the rest is your choices, depending on your module. You can also intern with the law firms and international organization like ICRC. They also offer a seat to the international student. There will be at least one international student for every batches, as the average. If you are thinking of the diversity, i reccomend you that there is a mainly people who greduate from international schools or even GED. So, everyone mostly communicate in Thai. Only SOME of them communicate in English daily but as for the study, it is your choices. The professor are well-qualified with doctoral degree. You can expect top tier standard here too! The living expense depends on you. This degree enablers you to take a bar exam and qualify for the attroney's bar. The fees only a tuition is 200K baht per year or 7000 USD.

    How could he practice law in Thailand since everything is in Thai? Even if he gets a job with foreign company in Thailand , and let says he helps out with international trade law, that's still in Thai language any how.

    • @livetravelasia
      @livetravelasia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Actually most of the cases he says is in English and international companies prefer native English speakers to interpret English documents as the documents are quite nuanced. As he is not Thai, he can't go to courts. They have to use a native Thai. So all foreigners practicing law are actually technically consultants. But he tells me on average they pay foreign consultants more than even the local Thai lawyers as there is a minimum pay threshold for foreigners working here. He says one of the biggest barriers to working here as a foreigner is not that they don't want to hire him, it's them justifying paying him two times as much as a local as there is a much higher minimum wage for foreigners. Also not being able to go to courts isn't an issue as they generally push for settlements in international law so going to court is really a nuclear option. Most of the large lawfirms dealing with international trade laws which is actually quite frequent here in Bangkok since there are so many international companies out here, are actually not Thai but western based law firms. Learnt quite a lot from him but didn't include it as most foreigners aren't going to come here to want to practice law. I think it's probably an easier option going for tourism management or something as there are a lot more jobs for foreigners in the hotel business it seems
