A lot of people think this is about AI and internet addiction, but I think this is a commentary on addiction as a whole.
In the part where the protag is waiting in line you’ll notice that other consumers are talking to each other.
Meaning most people in this universe probably use it for recreational purposes.

As a teen in the modern world, I already feel like such a person could never exist. Human interaction is agreed by many to be the most exhausting thing upon this Earth, yet it’s something no one can bear to be without. People inherently long for unconditional love and validation, but are also already so far up their own asses to care about anyone else. That’s why -if such an invention were to exist- it would be used by literally everyone, even if it was nothing more than a beautiful lie.
Come on did you change phones or did you stop using it when your last phone failed??
This concept would make for a great sci-fi thriller full length movie.

That's not ironic, it's what is expected, and most likely where they drew inspiration. It is apropos. No one would be surprised to see us watching this on a phone. Neither is it dramatic irony; we have no knowledge of what will happen to any of the characters before they do. The analogy to the phone is perfect though in many ways, good call.
To add to the irony, if indeed you can call it that, it’s this very addiction that’s causing us to cease to make real connections, and continue to be alone. We sacrifice the chance for real connection for that of the artificial connection we make here on TH-cam, because the artificial connections feel superficially better than the risks that come from taking a chance on being hurt by the real thing, and in so doing remain truly alone.

It always confuses me when people say “this was so ahead of its time!” to different forms of dystopian media like this. They never “predict” the future- they are always modern day social commentary through the lens of extremism so it’s less subtle to the viewer.
I love that this touches on so many topics at once, depending on the interpreter; depression, addiction, loneliness, society's tech obsession... it's good art.
The fact that the homeless dude had those scars shows what was happening and how those things changes people

This is relatable and two different ways.
1.addiction can drive us to do stupid things, or make us end up in dangerous situations.
2.the “best friend” company is like the company oculus mixed with Vrchat if you know what I mean, and it kinda shows what it does to most people which is kinda terrifying.
When Cami was floating away leading him to the other machine, it very much reminded me of a scene from Perfect Blue.
I actually thought of Paprika, since she was a creation of some mind neuro device like this one. But I definitely see how it could relate to Perfect Blue too.

Very. I sort of experience this in my own life and I only see this getting worse for society as time goes on. Things aren’t the same and idk if it’s just me or if everyone is experiencing it, but it doesn’t seem like the same world it once was where you can meet people so easily, connect and hit it off. Maybe it’s because I’m 30 like Arthur, but I also feel it’s a sign of the times. It just drives you towards filling that gap yourself, and that can very easily be with the wrong things that provide a quick fix so as to avoid the pain of confronting the real problem. Instant gratification is the phrase of the era.

What is this meant to be an analogy for then in terms of what it even says about having friends.
You're missing the point. These aren't just friends. They're the perfect friend. The friend you always wanted down to the smallest detail. Yes they could make friends with people in that line but those people aren't the perfect friend. They can't be a cool dragon or the perfect woman they have flaws you must accept but best friend doesn't have those same flaws.

This is so well executed! Shame the credits shrink at the end and I can see who did all the hard work
Not that I don't like happy endings but I think it would have been a better ending for him not to have had the friend device replaced because although it feels sad and lost for him, it would have been a bittersweet start to a better life and possibly finding a REAL new best friend in the real world. Then again, I suppose it could just be displaying how addictive some things can be and how hard it can be to break the pattern. Great job though, fascinating spin on a common trope!

@@malevaistudio2105 thank you but I really stopped caring, i don't care anymore... irl i live in a small city wheres no many young people are around and there's many old immigrants, and in online everyone just ghost me after 2 or 3 months even though i'm so nice with them, I always end up alone hahaha, I tried making friends from everywhere, Russia(cuz I'm learning russian), Europe, usa, etc, and etc but I always end up ghosted again hahaha and I don't blame them I'm sure they have real friends so why would they care about random person like me right? So yeah it's okay i meant to be alone :)

Good Sci-fi is socially relevant. Great sci-fi is prophetic. This 5 minute short does better what many movies fail to do. It's a chilling allegory for today and a cautionary tale of the future. This one has me terrified.

On the one hand, we are talking about illusory friendship in a dystopian world where everyone, despite their desire to be close to someone, is not capable of intimacy in the literal sense due to their fear of vulnerability, their reputation, or the same negative attitude towards other people. On the other hand, we are talking about choosing to live in an illusion as opposed to a full life in reality, which the brain perceives typically. And even despite the injuries and pain brought, a person continues to cling to his last chance to feel significant and needed by someone, despite the lack of physical support and the ability to help in case of an attack. Partly reminiscent of the situation with Replika, making you think that the main need of a person is simply to feel needed by someone, without even thinking about what AI actually feels.

As a society, all we want is to be appreciated. All every person wants is someone who they can laugh with, cry with, and celebrate with. But it’s so hard to be able to fit in in such a judgmental society, even with all our “inclusivity”.
Our inclusivity is just narrowing the ability for us to feel normal, to feel _human_ . You’ve most likely seen or even heard of the fakers of such mental and neurological disorders like ADHD, Tourette’s, and even going to such lengths as to claim having schizophrenia. Because if you aren’t “special”, you are “normal”. And normal people don’t belong.
This is fortelling of the things to come that are already in their beginning stages.
