12:42 I love the subversion, and the ghost rolling it's eyes. Considering i expected the same three cutscenes in every version, this whole video really suprised me.
I remember getting the Atari 5200 version and just being in awe of how close it was to the arcade version. Loved that system (I know so many hated the controller, but I LOVED it!). Ahh, the memories!
Wow - nice work putting together all these different versions! It’s interesting to see all the subtle differences, mainly based on the limitations of the hardware. I was impressed with the MSX sound, and I like the version of the ghost dragging it’s costume where you can see the blue tears, but now I’ve forgotten which system that was :)
Speaking of hardware limits the Famicom/NES versions had the ghost eyes be a different sprite object than the ghost bodies. It couldn't be done otherwise due to palette limits
I've never been good enough to see Intermission 2 and 3 and am just a little befuddled by the fact that apparently the ghosts are weird pink blobs wearing sheets.
They were originally supposed to be monsters, not ghosts. But people kept mistaking their sprites for ghosts, and they just ran with it. The first time they were officially classified as ghosts was, of all things, the Atari 2600 version.
i like that in cutscenes 2 and 3 on the game boy advance, the music stops when blinky gets exposed, as if it wasn't supposed to happen also the main menu music in the ios version of pac-man is so fun to listen to
I'm not surprised that the MZ-700 had to change the intermission. What I _am_ surprised about is that it had _five_ to make up for it. The NEC PC-8801mkII (and the IISR by comparison) had some pretty creative ones too. Too bad the 8801 also had the last non-vanilla intermissions.
3:36 Just by watching this, it seems the Sharp X1 couldn't do sound and animation at the same time. Or at least this game didn't since the music pauses when the ghosts move their eyes
I like how the X68k has an actual _nail_ for Blinky's "sheets" to get caught on, rather than a random, dimensionless, white line in the middle of the screen
It appears that the Sharp MZ-700 and the MZ-1500 both have the most intermission screens! I love how all the ghosts in the last coffee break scene have turned big and when Pac-Man turned normal again. That was amazing! And as for the last intermission on the PC-8801mkIISR, I was expecting the same thing would happen like in the Original Arcade in Cutscene 2, but Pac-Man rolled out instead! 😂 But OH MY GOD! What happened to Blinky and his sheet in the PC-98 Version?! It looks so cursed! 🤣 Either way, nice video!
The skits were pretty creative though. The double-take on the little Pacman, the Pacman sun/moon, and Pacman tripping on the nail rather than the ghost. Good stuff.
I just noticed the gba namco museum 50th anniversary version of the pac man intermission theme sounds just like the one in the android version of pac man
i noticed on the J2ME version that the score was increasing for each intermission, which makes me wonder how difficult is it for you to get footage for some of these things? do you use external sources like a TAS to find some of these?
Yes, but in the case of J2ME I had to play it without any help, since the emulator does not allow savestates nor does it have TAS functionality. The same happened in Google Doodle or the Windows versions. It was very painful lol.
this video made me realize that there were more ports of ms pac man than og pac man up until namco lost the license, now there more pac man than ms pac man
The amount of time and dedication that must have went into this is unreal. At this point, you might as well do a livestream where you play through every version of Pac-Man and see how far you can get in each. (It might take more than one stream though, lmao.)
Fun fact: the Apple][ version was commandeered from a very well made ripoff version called "Taxman" by H.A.L. Labs. The original Taxman game had 3 completely different intermission cutscenes.
If Atari made Pac Man for Colecovision and Inelevidion. What was that Atari placed on its 2600 system. Not even close that's what Pac Man was on the Atari 2600.
Not "missing" (because it''s not technically Pac-Man), but something you might find interesting since you were crazy enough to do this: there's also an intermission in the handheld Pac-Man clone Packri Monster (aka Pack Monster and Ogre Eater), which tries to emulate the first intermission of the arcade Pac-Man as best it can: th-cam.com/video/Zkv03_7f0ug/w-d-xo.html
The depiction of Blinkey without his sheet reveals the ghost's true identity... they are made of chewed bubble gum. Enchanted chewed bubble gum. Don't believe me? Consider Pacman 2 the New Adventure and Pac in Time, where the ghosts are shown to be working under the Ghost Witch, who's main objective is the creation of a Gum Monster. Clearly the ghosts are her earlier forms of the same creature, their sheets are actually wrappers, and finally we know why Pac-Man's mouth is always opening and shutting... he's chewing all that gum!
@@jonathanabela6098 The Gum Monster doesn't appear until the very end of each game. Do a quick Google search, you'll find it easily. That doesn't mean they're not still ghosts, when Pacman eats one their eyes fly away, showing there is definitely something spiritual at play. I think the gum just gives them physical form, the ability to hurt Pacman. Double Bubble, toil and trouble!, as the Ghost Witch would probably say.
