  • There are 5 things right now that you can look at to judge the quality and longevity of the spray foam system
    In this video we go over: adhesion, cohesion, density, depth and odor.

    What’s the best way to shave off high spots and clean studs. I’ve used 2” tape and sometimes that breaks. I’m in WI. spraying closed cell 2 pound.

    So should I be checking for things while they are doing the job. Should I have them spray a 6 inch by 6 in cardboard box and weigh that to make sure it is the proper density foam.
    It just seems crazy for me to be doing testing after they put in 1500 sqft of foam in my attic. If it is wrong at that point my home is going to become a year long construction fix.

      The company should know their job and you should be able to vet them prior to install that you have confidence in them doing things correctly. You can never watch close enough... you'd need to be the sprayer. If you can't trust them don't hire them.

    Does 2 pound spray foam become disbonded from the studs within the first 24 hours? Or in some cases does it take weeks?

    • @SprayJones
      @SprayJones  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It should happen within 24 36 hours. If the density is too low it will do it when the first cold snap happens and the foam has to contract.
      Watch the 5 failures and why video that was launched last week. That will help you too.

    Would love some more open cell info since I am in Florida

      We don't do a whole lot of that, not walls and roofs anyway. But when I get some more footage I will put something together just for you. So stay tuned.

    So if the form is underweight, and shrinks is that caused by having the heat set to high when you’re spraying?

    • @SprayJones
      @SprayJones  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No.
      The density is off. Too thick too quick would be the first place to look. Next is off ratio, or improper mix.
      Foam is chemically engineered to be the proper density, so if it has gone low something major has been done by someone to get it to do that. It is the equivalent of a cracked or twisted frame on a vehicle.

    Where does someone get these test kits?

    • @SprayJones
      @SprayJones  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From a spray foam equipment supplier. One that sell support equipment for the SPF industry.
      Try Poly Source out of Vancouver, BC

    So if you are spraying and everything seems to be working fine, machine does not shut off due to pressure in balance ECT and you take a sample and it is not up to spec. How do you determine what is the problem? I have never had a shrinkage issue until just recently we started using foam that has the HFO blowing agent. Had one job that was pretty bad, the other one only did it in two spots. I really would like to figure out how to prevent this in the future.

      Not enough info, too many variables to identify.
      Why is your supplier not helping you?
      Had you been using Open Cell and then switched?
      Machine can imbalance and still not error code....
      What are your drum temps?
      Supply issues with drum pumps?
      What was the cell structure? Density?

      @@SprayJones I mainly do roof foam in the summertime But we do some interior insulating in the winter. We have used Demilec and Carlisle . I am suspicious it has to do with the blowing agents, because we have never had an issue up until about a year and a half ago.

      I am in contact with my supplier but I am having a hard time getting a hold of the right guy that can give me some sound info. I know some other guys in our area have had some serious issues with shrinkage.So I am just trying to figure out how to prevent some major liability.

    So if the install is poor n has to be reinstalled must b one hell of a pissing contest. in the USA anyway with no testing

    • @SprayJones
      @SprayJones  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a pissing match anywhere. Just in USA you may get shot too. :)

      Yes and no. First time this happened the manufacturer responded and within 3 months of me raising the alarm the foam was removed and reinstalled free of charge by the installer. This is rare.
      Second time I raised concerns I was wholly dismissed with no testing at all.
      There are dedicated companies in the U.S. for consumers to obtain foam testing/inspection. The SPFA maintains a list of them. I am dealing with one now to resolve my issues 9 months into this nightmare. Fortunately, most installers will settle out of court in cases like this. Unfortunately, they're installing a defective product for consumers who are none the wiser and we have to front the cost of proving their work was bad.
