Highway Patrol: "Train Robbery" (Volume 2)

  • "Highway Patrol" spanned 4 seasons, and production ended in 1959. The part of Dan Mathews was played by Broderick Crawford, who ironically lost his driver's license after being arrested several times and convicted of DUI while "Highway Patrol" was in production.
The episode "Train Robbery" was produced in season 4.
During the first 2 seasons, the CHP (California Highway Patrol) offered technical assistance. The CHP withdrew its assistance because of unbelievable story lines, the lack of following standard police procedures, the fact that the show focused too heavily on violent crime instead of traffic enforcement, and Crawford's heavy drinking.
As an example of a ridiculously comical scene... note that after thwarting the train derailment and apparently killing one of the criminals, Mathews and Sgt. Williams simply walk away and leave with the uninjured criminal. No effort is made to secure the area, to perform an investigation, to check the deceased criminal's pulse, to take a statement from the victim, to gather evidence, to call an ambulance or the coroner, or to remove the deceased criminal's weapon.
Railroad enthusiasts will immediately notice that the Southern Pacific passenger train footage uses locomotives that switch from Alco PA's to GM F-Units.
The show's low budget ($25,000 per episode) meant that no vehicle crashes or wrecked cars would ever be shown.

Love this show, but it's hilarious how they say, "Let's go!" and just leave the dead body there with Betty.

Smashing upload!!! This is one of the few times I got to see Broderick Crawford again since the 1950's, i.e. almost 53 years. Thanks for the upload.

At last! A Hudson "stepdown" (judging from the taillights it's a 1952 or '53) seen in an episode of "Highway Patrol" that's parked on the left side of the road as the patrol car passes by at 3:43.

Love this show. However, the plot holes in this one were many. Half the dialog was to cover up why they couldn't stop the train, but even then with all that time they could have turned a signal red. Ah, but so what. Crawford is great and Mack from Adam-12 made a whole career playing cops.

An interesting episode. I enjoyed the authentic depot interior with telegraph and telephone-selector sounds going in the background. The lack of authenticity with regard to the consistency of what train we were looking at in the various shots was an insult to the audience. There were any of several methods that could have been used to stop the train long before it got there. 1) Assuming this is Automatic Block Signal territory, all one had to do would be to short the rails with a pair of jumper cables to give the engineer a red signal a couple miles in advance. 2) They also had radio communication then. 3) Or, someone could have driven to the track miles away and waved or posted a red flag, or laid down a red flare.

You never know if that's the actual station interior or they switched to a sound stage for those inside shots. Better sound quality in a sound stage and more room for the crew and equipment.

The part they cut was, at the end, when Dan said "Let's go" while the still, warm body of the robber was laying in the lobby. And, Betty's all like "Umm, wait. What about this guy??". and Dan's all like, "We'll get him later".

Thanks for the upload of a favourite show, even if continuity wasn't in the budget. I can overlook the different locomotives leading the speeding train that never stopped. I vote for the square nosed Alco PA over the EMD F Unit, 10-4.

The police must be inside with Betty and not at another location. Also, the Division Dispatcher a no no. Betty is everything alright? How can she say anything? No code word for answering.
