robynb53 This is what country was... a long time ago. Folk and country have similar roots in Americana, and this is a good example of a more countrified folk music than the stuff that Nashville produces today. Ditto for the Bear Creek album.
dgmisal1979 I agree with you, the country today that I hear is so much "tear in my beer" stuff, it makes me turn the station. But I do like old country and folk...
This song got me through the toughest time in my entire life. At a time when I didn't want to be alive (and even, at one point, tried not to be) I was encouraged to see Brandi for free at a local venue. She wasn't big at the time and had very little fame or notoriety. I was really enjoying the concert, then this song came on. It hit me in a way that made me feel unlike I ever had before. All of my pain and my sadness felt so real and so recognized. I felt validated, loved, understood, and moved all at the same time by these three incredible artists. The lyrics of the song itself. The beautiful, haunting melody. I broke down to tears and have been following Brandi and the twins ever since. They changed my life for the better, and it was this song that did it.
I’m glad you made it through. But I don’t know how you manage to see her at a local venue, and thought that she hadn’t made it big yet… If she was playing this song- she’d been around 10yrs, with her 1st big hit “The Story” was played everywhere 7yrs before The Eye was released- people singing it on American Idol even years before this. So u were lucky u got a small show somehow (unless you’re telling me she was singing this song many years before it was released?) Take care :)
I never do comments, but I feel so compelled to say that THIS is country music. A song not about drinking beer and getting drunk at bars, but a song telling a simple truth every human can relate to.. THANK YOU Brandi for reminding us!
LebannersHook tempo has nothing to do with "genre", this song could be considered either country or folk. I would steer towards country because of the vernacular and chosen accent she sings with. "Folk" isn't distinctly American, I would describe this accent vocally as "American". Just my two cents....
Wow...what a freakin' good song this is... I'm nearly 70 years old and I thought music had died back in the seventies when disco got popular. I pretty much quit listening for over 30 years. Then my son turned me on to this kind of stuff--Americana, folk...whatever...and now I realize that music is better than ever. I hardly ever listen to the old stuff anymore. There's a radio station in my neck of the woods--western North Carolina--that plays Americana all the time, along with blues, old time country, new style bluegrass....WNCW out of Spindale...I've been going nuts discovering all the wonderful music being played these days. Makes old age a hell of a lot more pleasant to deal with...lol...
***** Yeah, pretty much...radio wasn't worth a shit anymore...I was burned out on listening to the same old stuff I'd been hearing since the 60's...so music just didn't play a major part in my life for a long time...now it does again.
+Larry Martin Welcome back Larry! We sing and play like this all the time. Accoustic at the Dining table with good friends, wine and great food too! It's all still out there
+Larry Martin Music didn't die;mass media buried it. If it doesn't sell Pepsi or some other useless commodity it doesn't get played on the main stream airways.

Joel Bennett i agree completely. This is a classic. It will stand the test of time. A lotof their music will. It’ll take a minute..but it’s happening as we speak. Super fun to witness.
I caught my ten year old son, who also loves pop music on the radio, singing this last week. (Of course, I played Brandi for him the week before.) Brandi and the twins are wonderful.
I am a Japanese student. Thomas Friedman said about this song in "Thank You for Being Late"(遅刻してくれてありがとう), so I came here to listening to. I think that this is a very good song.
Nearly 11 years later and I still don't get how this woman and her art have not been recognized more. Very few artists have moved my soul, and she is one of them. So happy for her and the twins for taking home all 3 wins!
Those unfamiliar with Brandi don't understand how hard she's worked for her success or how hard she works for those less fortunate. She's is generous, kind, funny, honest, hard working and awesome gay wife, baptist daughter, talented musician and wonderful mother.
My sister used to say that every time she heard this song, she thought of me. Looking back, I can see why. I'm glad I was able to come out of that period of my life unscathed and that our relationship got better. Love Brandi Carlile.
I was driving from South Dakota back to home Indiana. When this came on the SirusXm coffee house chanel. I love REAL COUNTY MUSIC not so much what they play on the raido. This lady has a great voice id never herd of her before.
The best thing that has happened to me musically recently is discovering Brandi. What a lady 'The Eye' is very meaningful, she sings with such true feelings and her colleagues are true excellent guitarist so is Brandi. Thank you for such music and continue forever
"The Eye" It really breaks my heart To see a dear old friend Go down in the worn old place again Do you know the sound Of a closing door? Have you heard that sound somewhere before? Do you wonder if she knows you anymore? I wrapped your love around me like a chain But I never was afraid that it would die You can dance in a hurricane But only if you’re standing in the eye Where did you learn to walk? Where did you learn to run? Away from everything you love Did you think the bottle Would ever ease your pain? Did you think that love’s a foolish game? Did you find someone else to take the blame? I wrapped your love around me like a chain But I never was afraid that it would die You can dance in a hurricane But only if you’re standing in the eye You can dance in a hurricane But only if you’re standing in the eye I am a sturdy soul And there ain't no shame In lying down in the bed you've made Can you fight the urge to run for another day? You might make it further if you learn to stay I wrapped your love around me like a chain But I never was afraid that it would die You can dance in a hurricane But only if you’re standing in the eye You can dance in a hurricane But only if you’re standing in the eye
This sing is no joke. I’ve been without booze for 25 years now..I’m very grateful and very blessed. But this song is truth upon truth upon truth. Every time I lose someone from drinking, which unfortunately still happens a lot, I play and listen to this again. It still goes straight to the wound…but…I’m still alive.
Just learned about Brandi this year and got to see her too. A wonderful singer (band) and so personable as well. The audience (gals) were all so nice sitting around me as well. Many traveled for hours to this concert. I'm just up the road a few miles.
Their harmonies are a family's harmonies. So utterly in sinc and tight. I'm so glad she has these beautiful men on either side of her through her life. What a blessing.
Same :) I discovered them trough the Netflix series „the ranch“. Since then I listen to their music. Sorry for my english. It’s not my native language.
I've had this song on my playlist for years. But never has it meant as much to me as it does now that I lost my son to addiction last year. 😔 Life will never be the same. Rest easy son. Your momma loves you. Johnathan ♾️ 27
Driving back home from a Springsteen concert, I popped in a new CD that I hadn’t listened to yet, The Firewatcher’s Daughter. When The Eye came on, I played it on repeat 15 times until I knew every word. I HAD to know every word. I was mesmerized. Still am, every time I hear it.
So, she breaks through with "What Can I Say?" and people say, "Damn, she's a bright talent with a lot of promise. I wonder if she can live up to it?" Then, she follows up with "Late Morning Lullaby," "The Story," "Josephine," etc. and they're wowed for the temporal moment of a young star flourishing. But that moment can't last. Young stars are fleeting things in this day and age. So when she returns with "That Year," they're a bit taken aback that she's recreated brilliance again. But surely she can't keep it up. Even the most profound creative forces have their ebbs and flows. Then, "That Wasn't Me." How could someone's music continue to become so much richer, so much more beautiful, yet somehow every bit as raw as when we first heard it? Where's the fall-off? It has to be at "Bear Creek," it just has to. What I've just heard in the last 3:48 might be the single finest song Brandi Carlile and the twins have released. For all the words that I've wasted in this mess of a comment, I have only one for "The Eye" - timeless. Timeless.
i couldn't have said it any better. love, love her previous work, but this is spectacular. this belongs in the company of the greatest songs of all time.
Mike Morris Mike you are so very spot on!! This song is indeed timeless. At least for me it has moved very quickly into one that I will have in my top rotation from now on. One of the best written and performed songs I have ever heard by anyone, anywhere. Magic!! Thank Mike for the nice way you put her history which as you say gets better and better with time. Well done!
Carolynn ni Lochlainn Yeah huh!?!? The beautiful simplicity of the song and the talent of the players make a truly magical experience. So getting it done perfectly on take one does not surprise. I have had this on loop on my phone for weeks now. In fact the entire album is spot on.
The twins have beautiful harmony together like the Everly Brothers did. Being related is a big part of what made them sound great together, and it's what makes these two sound awesome.
We’re missing a number of things in this world these days. Honesty, honor, dignity and above all common decency. BC and friends brings us all of that with their amazing, yet simple, pure talent. I am heartened.
What a beautiful breathe of fresh air you bring to Country music. I love that you can hear the words and hear the story in your music. So glad I have found you and your music. Love from Australia Brandi 🦋🙏🌻🇦🇺🌹🌅💞
I heard this tonight on satellite radio for the first time. Had to come home and listen to it a few more time. Can't believe I've never heard this song before, it's amazing.
I've been going through a really hard time for the last year and a half. I've been wanting to take my life and I'm still a kid. It's been really hard this last month especially but Brandi has been getting me through it. I saw her live when she performed in bethel woods New York and her songs have been there to save me from myself.
Such a super smart song about love, self-love and those, who try to run away from honest commited selfLOVE and true LOVE for the other one. - Great poetical country music and BRANDI CARLILE is a vocal gem !
A friend of mine who recently passed, sent me an MP3 of him and his friends doing a version of this and it’s really good. In his honor I decided to check the lyrics and they certainly left me stunned,..Rest in Peace Joe Sonia,…you were good!!!
The year Brandi released "The Eye" it was the best song of the year. It is one of the best songs every written. Simply, she was robbed of the grammy, or the accolades, of the applause. The song is magic, the singing is magic. The first time I heard it was watching this video - I was rendered mute. It was that perfect. I would say I'm surprised that the music industry, like the movie industry has all their heads firmly up their a**es, but I'm not. Most of the awards are a joke. They do not honor greatness. They award popularity, and less worthy individuals. One might say it comes down to opinion. And that may be. But at least on this score, my opinion is correct. This was the song of the year. And five years later I still listen and am still wowed.
Can I just say, for the people commenting that "John Mayer brought me here", thank you John Mayer and please for the rest of you check out her earlier stuff too. Brandi is amazing. A hugely missed underrated artist, who deserves recognition.
I am a sturdy soul... From the Guy Clark school of song writing.. This takes my breath away on so many levels..what a team... The people United will never be defeated Same GOES for a band No EGO because my ego is not my AMIGO... Greetings from Dublin Ireland brother and sisters...they are exceptional...
"You can dance in a hurricane. But only if you're standing in the eye" This is why I love you guys. So simple, yet so profound. In the dictionary, the definition of harmony should have you guys right there. Pure perfection. Your music takes my breath away. Please come play on Oahu. I NEED to see you guys live. Much love❤💙💚💛💜💟🎵🎶🎤🎼🎻🎹🎷🎺🎸🎧📻
I fell in love with Brandi when I first heard Pride and Joy. I was stunned then, and have continued to be washed away in emotion with so many songs. Once again my breath has been taken away. The third verse hits hard. I am so happy I was introduced to this music . . . this life. . . this love . . . this mind . . .
It’s funny to me how music finds you when you’re looking for something....anything..to help you. I’ve never known Brandi Carlisle til the last week...... ty
When I first listened to this song, I just thought about how cool it was to listen to Brandi and the twins' voice again and that the music was very relaxing and such... but then I decided to look up the lyrics and that's when this song destroyed me. Now I can't listen to it without my eyes tearing up. It just hits me because it talks about something that every single one of us has experienced at least once and yeah, it hurt at the moment, it still hurts right now and it sure will hurt pretty much forever. Thank you guys for digging once more into our souls and connecting us to our feelings, which are what keep us alive.
Extraordinary. Read her autobiography. She had a interesting and often tortured life that she honestly shared but ultimately with rewards, including meeting and marrying Catherine Shepherd. I also recommend the audio version which includes some wonderful music following every chapter (representing those times of her life). An album version of those songs would perfect to own. I have listen to and admired Brandi Carlile since she released her first album in 2006.
This song is perfect!!!! It's amazing that Brandi has a very long career and I didn't know about her because the music industry just wants to give us pop artists without talent. I knew about her because at the end of a movie (The Sweet Life) a song from her is played and I loved it so much that I looked for it on Shazam. Since then I keep listening to her wonderful music. Super singer and songwriter; better human being. I love her with all my being. I hope to see her perform live someday.
Im looking forward for the next spring, when we are gonna live at the countryside. I can imagine me listening this quiet and outstanding music while my little baby girl is playing on the grass.
I saw them sing this song acoustic like this at the House of Blues in New Orleans just earlier this year and now it really does hold a special place in my mind. I can feel it when I hear it.
Sometimes you sit back and wonder how somebody could write something so beautiful.
She is quoting some one with p t s d and she is very beautiful
Artist I swear I am a disabled woman. She is very beautiful and very blessed.
Gosh, yes.
When you finally find a new artist to be excited about, find out that they are not even remotely new, and sad that you have missed out for so long.
Sad no...I get excited about all the material I am about to discover!
Don't feel bad. I had no idea either.
I have a feeling this is what country music is supposed to sound like.
This is not country......she is not country....hope she doesn't go country either....
robynb53 This is what country was... a long time ago.
But I do like old country and folk...
robynb53 Yea. I pretty much feel the same. Country is like rock... a big tent with people in it that I like and people I dislike.
yeah what they call country today ain't nothing but a damn mess it's more like pop than anything else
This song got me through the toughest time in my entire life. I hope you're doing well now.
You are not alone. If I ever see them perform this live I will melt like the silly, weak sugar skull I am.
I can relate. So glad you're doing better! Stay strong!!!
Music is very powerful that way. Life-affirming. The source of music is divine, so it connects you with your own divinity.
"You can dance in a hurricane, but only if you're standing in the eye." What a line!
I love that he's playing her guitar. They live in our town. They are all just great, humble, nice people. And phenomenally talented!
Love love love
Can I move to your town? 🙏🏻😆
I love you. You are so lucky to live near Brandi and the twins
Meeting Brandi would be a mark off on my bucket list. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Thank you for sharing. I felt what you confirmed. ♥️
Fabulously talented, Salt of the earth people.
I never do comments, but I feel so compelled to say that THIS is country music. A song not about drinking beer and getting drunk at bars, but a song telling a simple truth every human can relate to.. THANK YOU Brandi for reminding us!
Jonathan Curtis Way too slow to be country. This is definitely her folk side coming out.
LebannersHook a country ballad sir. A ballad. And it is country.
Myrna Riquier Nope, this is a folk song, sorry.
LebannersHook tempo has nothing to do with "genre", this song could be considered either country or folk. I would steer towards country because of the vernacular and chosen accent she sings with. "Folk" isn't distinctly American, I would describe this accent vocally as "American". Just my two cents....
Completely agree with you. Brandi is country.
Brandi Carlile is a gift from God.
Hello Julie 👋 how are you ??

"I am a sturdy soul" is such a breathtaking lyric.
Her lyrics are brilliant

"You might make it further if you learn to stay." Absolutely brilliant.

I cannot watch this without it taking all my attention. I savor ever note, harmony, facial expression, body motion. it's overwhelming.
I will make everyone listen when this song comes on. it is agreat song.
I caught my ten year old son, who also loves pop music on the radio, singing this last week. (Of course, I played Brandi for him the week before.) Brandi and the twins are wonderful.
When you have a soulful voice and powerful lyrics like that, you don't need any gimmicks. Absolutely beautiful!
you really put it well!
Thank you Loyce!
Hear hear!
Very well said! Pure talent ..no gimmicks. Brandi is beautiful inside and out!
I will never understand why Brandi Carlile has not a thousand Grammys.
I completely agree
give it time :) she hasn't really blown up yet.
Erica Burrell Wish she would get on with it.
I don't know... after what I saw on the Grammy's this year, I'm not surprised. She far surpasses.
I do. She's too good.
I am a Japanese student. Thomas Friedman said about this song in "Thank You for Being Late"(遅刻してくれてありがとう), so I came here to listening to. I think that this is a very good song.

Sean Flynn I’m just glad she’s not racist so I can go on and enjoy her talent
OK. I grew up in the 60s and thought all the good music was over. I hate today's music. BUT THIS IS AWESOME.
there is a lot of good music, just look. Kacey Musgrave for instance.
My brothers in ICU and Brandi is helping me get through the waiting. Love 💘 her
Brandy Carlile sits in the company of Emmy Lou Harris and Allyson Krause…. Truly genuine Americana
My sister used to say that every time she heard this song, she thought of me. Looking back, I can see why. I'm glad I was able to come out of that period of my life unscathed and that our relationship got better. Love Brandi Carlile.
I've probably played this vid 50 times in the last year or so....STILL gives me goosebumps, EVERY TIME!
Easily one of the top 100 songs ever recorded in human history
Took me years to realize this. Amen.
💯 percent
What a beautiful song and the harmonies of these three is amazing
Hello Deborah 👋 how are you doing today??
Authentic real country music. Not the corny "pop country" that is so often played on the airwaves. Love Brandi and her unique artistry.
Just Learned about Brandi few months back. I saw her in August in Mass. with great seats. OMG. Best concert ever.
One of the most underrated artists in the business! Love her!
I'll never get over how damn good this is.

She wanted to achieve that 70’s folk sound and she is SPOT ON.
Jesus Christ almighty those harmonies are out of this world

"The Eye"
It really breaks my heart
To see a dear old friend
Go down in the worn old place again
Do you know the sound
Of a closing door?
Have you heard that sound somewhere before?
Do you wonder if she knows you anymore?
I wrapped your love around me like a chain
But I never was afraid that it would die
You can dance in a hurricane
But only if you’re standing in the eye
Where did you learn to walk?
Where did you learn to run?
Away from everything you love
Did you think the bottle
Would ever ease your pain?
Did you think that love’s a foolish game?
Did you find someone else to take the blame?
I wrapped your love around me like a chain
But I never was afraid that it would die
You can dance in a hurricane
But only if you’re standing in the eye
You can dance in a hurricane
But only if you’re standing in the eye
I am a sturdy soul
And there ain't no shame
In lying down in the bed you've made
Can you fight the urge to run for another day?
You might make it further if you learn to stay
I wrapped your love around me like a chain
But I never was afraid that it would die
You can dance in a hurricane
But only if you’re standing in the eye
You can dance in a hurricane
But only if you’re standing in the eye

The world can fall apart during this pandemic, but if you and your loved ones are together and safe, you can dance in the eye of a hurricane!
Should have won a Grammy for this one!

I heard this tonight on satellite radio for the first time. Had to come home and listen to it a few more time. Can't believe I've never heard this song before, it's amazing.
Brandi never gets old....So real, so pure, so talented. This girl is right up there with the legends.
These harmonies could cure depression
I've been going through a really hard time for the last year and a half. I've been wanting to take my life and I'm still a kid. It's been really hard this last month especially but Brandi has been getting me through it. I saw her live when she performed in bethel woods New York and her songs have been there to save me from myself.
Please hold on. And reach for help when you need to. 988 is the hotline. The world needs you.

Saved to the playlist…. anyone else sitting back watching the sun go down & thankful for songs like this one? I surely am. 💗
Lordy! Bout to make me cry!!! How have I never heard of this.
I can't stop listening to this song. How did I go on with my life without know this amazing artist? Honestly.
This band is the spinal cord of my whole musical existence, I am truly blessed to have found them back in 2009.
Wow! This song immediately joins the classics: The Eagles 7 Bridges Road, Poco's Crazy Love, and everything Crosby, Stills, and Nash.
Brandi Carlile's harmonies are like a thousand angels singing!
A voice for the ages, and that's a fact.
this song will always make me cry at every listen
Nailed it on the first take! That's how you do an amazing folk ballad! Love this song...
Having just watched them perform this live, I have no doubt this really was the first take. They were equally amazing and perfect live
YOU MIGHT MAKE IT FURTHER.... IF YOU LEARN TO STAY.
damn.
The people United will never be defeated
Same GOES for a band
No EGO because my ego is not my AMIGO...
Greetings from Dublin Ireland brother and sisters...they are exceptional...
The Eye And That Wasn't Me
are 2 of the most powerful tunes that I LOVE. THANK YOU Brandi
The melody, the lyrics, the harmony, just breathtakingly beautiful music 🎶 ❤ 🎶
"You can dance in a hurricane.
But only if you're standing in the eye"
This is why I love you guys.
I am so happy I was introduced to this music . . . this life. . . this love . . . this mind . . .
I saw her last night at the Pink concert. New fan!!! Loved this song.
This is my second favourite song by these amazing artists, but only because I like 'The Joke' so much it brings me to my knees. Extraordinary art.
It’s funny to me how music finds you when you’re looking for something....anything..to help you. I’ve never known Brandi Carlisle til the last week...... ty
This was her first song I ever heard a few years back. She and the twins are awesome!
Holy hell. Hauntingly beautiful.
She is one of the greatest song writers of our time.
First time hearing this lady... WOW!
I love her . And her beautiful voice . What a beautiful gift we got with this song lyrics n sounds.
Heard ""The Eye"" for the first time tonight on the Netflix program ""The Ranch"" And I love the song
She looks so much better with long hair
The amount of soul that is in this particulary performance can inspire a thousand lifes
No matter how old or how many times I watched this the experience is always different ❤️
Diese 3 Stimmen sind grandios und die Energie, der Klang, der Text der übermittelt wird wickeln einen ein und hält einen fest.
Tonight, dear Brandi. Tonight I'll hear you and the Twins sing this again live. Never too many times for this amazing song!!!
The honesty of this is humbling, and beautiful.
This is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever watched and listened to at the same time.
