Great video Tim. Just binge watched a few of your videos. Going to do some similar tests with my setup and see how the results compare. I’ve always wanted to test the Jones and Doust (1996) paper. I think my results will show slightly different results from casual observations which perhaps means I need to look into the calibration of my NoblePro or whether my running style is suited to treadmills. We will see.
Thanks Matt. Yeah be very interested to see how you get on. I have done the "prep" (well the running!) for a follow up video where ran the 10.5 kph to 15.0 kph ones at 1% then 2% for 2 laps of the track then went round the block outside as here. 2% at 15 kph and I was struggling by the end! Decided to call it a day there! I will leave you to try 2% at the 18.0 kph one :)
My cadence is the opposite to your's. Higher cadence for similar pace on the treadmill over outside. Now I still have my treadmill physically slightly sloped uphill, mostly since I want my treadmill sessions to be a bit harder than outside. Since I have no issues running 3hr long runs every weekend outside, but I have a physical/mental limit of about 90mins on the Dreadmill. Nice work!
Tim Trenholm Interesting about your cadence. Outdoors if it gets really steep I tend to try and take small steps so effectively increase my cadence so that maybe a factor.
Thanks! Obviously my test only really applies to me on my treadmill and of course I am assuming my treadmill's speed is "correct" but it did rather confirm I am in the ballpark at 0% on this setup. I will try at 1% and 2% to see how that matches up. One thing I never liked about the 1% thing is having to run "differently" although this test also showed I do anyway with seemingly 6 spm less cadence. More to look into for sure.
Tim Grose definitely. Also be interesting to note whether the reduction in cadence on the treadmill could be attributed to an assist from treadmill motor to achieve a certain speed, rather than just a calibration setting.
Had not thought of that - but will see if can measure this. I always have had a fairly high cadence even though I am rather tall (1.95m/6'5"). I had thought that my cadence was a bit too high and lots of treadmill running in recent years seems to help develop a slightly longer stride as have seen my outdoor cadence drop slightly. I think there is also a factor outdoors of watching your step more and certainly higher cadence helps me to feel more stable.
At the time when I got it (about 3 years ago) it was largely the only that had direct Bluetooth connection to Zwift. There are now a lot more. I am very tall and the low to the ground footprint was also a big attraction so I could fit on it! Also a friend had one and did a short run on it and seemed near gym standard quality with 20 kph top speed being fast enough for 99% of my training. The console being very functional but minimalist and the iPad holder also appealed as I use Zwift for the main "display" so all I need from a console is really just the speed/incline buttons and current settings plus place for iPad for Zwift Companion and water bottle holders. That makes the weight of it about half similar home treadmills so fairly easy to just reposition slightly if need be. Equally it is stable enough that have not found it moves of its own accord. Probably cheaper options these days but still very pleased went with this one as not yet seen one I now wish I had instead.
@@TimGrose Hi Tim, thank you so much for your detailed response as it's very much appreciated. I've been reviewing several treadmills and the Technogym MyRun seems to have the best Bluetooth connectivity able to connect to multiple apps. It's not the cheapest treadmill on the market, in fact quite expensive compared to others. But has the best build quality and stability as you stated. Once again thank you
Tricky one to answer as obviously I don't test different home treadmills. That said speaking to a few friends then we think the MYRUN is the still the best for its price point. NoblePro seem to have gained decent traction at a slightly lower price point and the upcoming Wahoo one could change the whole landscape.
I agree Tim! Wahoo one seems to be the all-in-one solution but in Europe where I stay, it will delay at least one year as far as I read! Many thanks and congrats for your videos!
@@pcvasilis I have certainly been pleased with my MYRUN and big plus for me it takes up minimal room (being tall head clearance an issue!) and relatively easy enough to move if need to. As you say the Wahoo one probably won’t be available outside US for a good while yet and will be somewhat more expensive anyway.
@@ciambruschiniboys2 possibly. I think it is largely a personal preference and I prefer to have the treadmill level. If that feels too easy and you don’t want to increase speed then suggest try 1%
@@PavelGrigorenko I guess the 1% thing was more to do with that study. Besides there is only so long I find you can make these videos before people get bored and this one I had to cut out huge amounts of footage and lots of data to analyse just on one incline setting.
Do you mean the 0% on the Zwift display say at 2:05 in the video? I am actually running Zwift on a PC and recording the display using the OBS software. It is a MYRUN Technogym and yes am very happy with it. That said there might now be cheaper options which are "Smart" for Zwift in being able to transmit the treadmill speed direct to it.
@@TimGrose Thanks for this video, not sure if you are aware but the Stryd can do that directly, or recent garmin watches can relay,Ive been looking at Myrun or alreatives (life fitness T3). Graham Clarke yes have got a Stryd. Just a lot easier with the MYRUN - set a pace and go and Zwift shows that exact same pace. In my most recent Shoeoff video I had a lower cadence in the Alphafly than other shoes for same effort but maybe an element of striding out more when fresh as well as the shoes. Needs more of a look.
Ha ha I am tall but I guess everybody needs to have a good stride to run relatively fast. I think if I was sprinting it would need a stride length of about my height so around 2.00m.

Fascinating, maybe it's the increased arm drive outdoors that's driving your cadence, hence less arm swing indoors so less turnover on stride?

So Tim, if I were to Run at a 2% incline on a treadmill would this be very similar to running on a flat track or not?
It kind of depends on your treadmill. With my MYRUN I would say no - 2% or even 1% incline is “harder” than outdoors on the flat.
@@TimGrose So would the advanced treadmill say at a Planet Fitness or Golds Gym be similar by using an incline?
@@ciambruschiniboys2 possibly. I think it is largely a personal preference and I prefer to have the treadmill level. If that feels too easy and you don’t want to increase speed then suggest try 1%
I think it would be more fair comparison if you could repeat the same test with 1% incline on the treadmill (and may be 1.5-2% as well)
Pavel Grigorenko yeah that is a good idea. I realised to do all speeds at different inclines would be a rather long session!
