Very interesting and well done. Really, the name of Brutus was Lucius Junius (not Tarquinius) called Brutus. He was born of the latin Gens Junia but related to the Tarquins through his mother Tarquinia, a descendant of Tarquinius Priscus. Just now it is published an english translation of my fictionalzed history of the Tarquins "The last Kings of Rome - the Etruscan dynasty that ruled the Eternal City". It is based both on Livy and Dionysius stories, but also on the researches and theories of prof. Andrea Carandini and Paolo Carafa of the Sapienza University of Rome. Congratulations for your good work.

I would say that Romulus was an archaic roman god. His narrative of his birth is similar to greek Perseus, and the irish god Lugh, yet his actions as an agressive expansionist, and the first king of a nation, is quite similar to Nuada in Ireland, who is the first god king and the one who expands his dominion by conquering other deities.
The tale of Tarquinius Superbus, him usurping the throne and later deposition also mirros the tale of Lugh and Bres, in which Bres is considered a illegitimate king, while Lugh deposes him; both Superbus and Bres seek aid of someone of his own ethnicity, Superbus with Lars Porsenna and Bres with Balor. So the final battle of the Irish Gods and the conflict between the last king of Rome and the romans echoes a, possibly, similar origin in their tales. The issue here is that the romans shaped their ancient mythology as pseudo-history.
Also, note how Rome is sieged just as Troy is, and both stories of a city sieged mark the end of a cycle in each tradition: in Rome marks the end of kingship and the one in Troy signifies the end of the heroic cycle; meanwhile the Irish Cycle should end in the final battle of the gods.

I think they were probably real people, and there were many other kings, or their reigns were extended to make the founding earlier. Are there any theories any why later authors would be interested in an 8th century founding? I know many ancient Roman and Greek writers placed the Trojan war much later than we conventionally do today, like in the 10th or 9th century bc. Perhaps the legendary chronology of Aeneas has something to do with it.
They also placed the founding of Republic in 509bc, making it one year before the founding of Athenian democracy, but at the same time claimed Rome sent a delegation to Athens for advice on how to form their new government a few years later.

The Tale of Romulus and Remus is pure mythology disguised as history. The tale of the twins and the way they founded Rome, is incredibly similar to the tale of the irish god Lugh and the story of Perseus. Most characters surrounding Romulus tale are deities, and some gods have taken the role of legendary characters the Romans thought were historical.
