  • Hi Guys here is the new video from my channel "How to make adjustable 1 to 20 voltage power supply from old PSU.DIY Bench power supply." from "Electrical and electronics projects" "E&EP" Channel.
    This is a PSU from old computer and want it to convert to 1 - 20 Volts Adjustable power supply almost works same as bench power supply.
    We need different range of voltages to power any electronics like DC motors,circuits etc.So, i have made this adjustable power supply by showing a Circuit diagram to you guys and with the help of my video.It is very easy to make your own even, a begginer can also make this one by following video and circuit diagram.
    ABOUT WIRING:
    Here in this PSU to make it 1- 20v adjustable power supply i have cut all unecessary wires excep four wires : Blue,Yellow,Green and Grey.
    Blue wire is -12v used for cathode and Yellow wire is +12v used for Anode and the remaining two are for turn the PSU on by connecting them together and for Digital DC volt meter there are three wires connected with RED,BLACK and WHITE Red&Black wires are to power the Meter connect Black to Blue -12v and Red to +12v and connect the White wire to output voltage side of circuit which is adjustable for more better understanding the circuit diagram is in the video.
    MATERIAL'S LIST:
    220 ohm Resister 1/4W (1)
    100uF 35v Capacitors (2)
    0.1 uF 50v Capacitors (2)
    VR Potentiometer 10k (1)
    U1 LM317 Regulator
    Binding Pots (2)
    Digital DC volt meter 0-99v
    Volume knob
    AC Switch on/off button.

    I would rather get one of those 150~ Watt Boosters, boost 12vdc voltage up (most power supplies can push 10+A easy)...smooth it with caps, then use buck to regulate back down (smooth output as well to remove ripple)...hooking the -12vdc rail to the +12vdc rail limits the current available as most -12vdc rails on ATX power supplies are very very limited in current capacity. • @worldentropy
    @worldentropy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Though good intentioned, this isn't really a solution to the problem: you're attaching a linear regulator and using the ATX PSU as a voltage source.
    What would be a much better and neater solution, IMHO, is to hack the SMPS and create a continuously variable output voltage from the voltage divider on the LV side, linking to the optocoupler adjusting the PWM duty cycle.
    This is what I'll be doing to fill the bordom of COVD-19 lockdown, and will surely publish the result.
    Good effort regardless ..

    • @alerey4363
      @alerey4363 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is that any hack into the ATX PSU always alters ALL the voltages (i.e. 3.3, 5, 12); imho the best solution is to have a mixed setup: all 3 fixed switched and protected output voltages and one linear regulated variable output for ocassional use in circuits

    • @Carsfixedright
      @Carsfixedright 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alerey4363 how would I make this scenario. I need the PSU to have an output of 20 volts on one circuit and 12 volts on another circuit. I know it's possible. Any help you have would be appreciated. I will not need any other voltage scenarios and the amperage is max 15a on both circuits

    the only change I would make is not use the power switch on the mains connection. if you connect the green wire to the switch, and the black to the same switch, you control everything with low voltage and low current.

  • @razvan6936
    @razvan6936 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Very nice. Just a few problems... First, the heatsink for the LM317 is too small. Linear voltage regulators work just like a variable resistor. They convert the unused energy into heat. Second, because that PSU is a SMPS (switching mode power supply) you must put a small load on it (like a 5W 25 ohm resistor on the 5V output) so the output voltages will stabilise. And try isolating the binding posts with something because they are too close to other components in the PSU. But, finally, very nice project! ;)

      just look inside them, you cannot miss the power supply part! :)
      but those are really low power supplies, even they can offer 25-35 volts, they will offer a mere tens (or hundreds if you are lucky and those are really old) miliamps of current... so, they are not so useful :)

    Its a waste that the PSU can supply so many amps on its default voltages but your LM317 limits all of it to only 1.5 amp max. If the lm317 is paired with a transformer and a rectifier, it'll probably be 1/4 the size of the entire PSU - much much smaller

    • @yonggor

      Adam Gadut yeah, it's true. the power supply has many voltage values which can be directly used for most common applications. if a variable PSU is really needed, a cheap buck converter is better.

    Oi pessoal aqui é o novo vídeo do meu canal "Como fazer fonte de alimentação ajustável 1 a 20 de tensão da fonte de alimentação velha PSU.DIY Bench". de "Projetos elétricos e eletrônicos" Canal "E & EP".
    Este é um PSU do computador antigo e quer converter para 1 - 20 Volts Fonte de alimentação ajustável quase funciona mesmo como fonte de alimentação do banco.
    Precisamos de uma gama diferente de tensões para alimentar qualquer eletrônica como motores DC, circuitos, etc.Então, eu fiz esta fonte de alimentação ajustável, mostrando um diagrama de circuito para vocês e com a ajuda do meu vídeo.É muito fácil fazer o seu próprio mesmo, um iniciante também pode fazer isso seguindo o diagrama de vídeo e de circuito.
    SOBRE FIAÇÃO:
    Aqui neste PSU para torná-lo 1- 20V fonte de alimentação ajustável eu cortei todos os fios desnecessários, exceto quatro fios: azul, amarelo, verde e cinza.
    O fio azul é -12v usado para catodo e o fio amarelo é + 12v usado para ânodo e os dois restantes são para ligar a fonte de alimentação conectando-os juntos e para o voltímetro digital DC há três fios conectados com vermelho, preto e vermelho são para alimentar o medidor conectar preto para azul -12v e vermelho para + 12v e conectar o fio branco ao lado de tensão de saída do circuito que é ajustável para entender melhor o diagrama de circuito está no vídeo.

    i wonder when -12v is connected to the ground, is -12v grounded or the ground is pulled down to -12v? what is the voltage between +12v and ground then? or -12v is actually just a specific ground (0v) for +12v?

    • @ElectricalElectronicsProjects
      @ElectricalElectronicsProjects  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When we take -12 as a negative and +12 as positive terminal so it sum -12 + + 12 = 24 Volts. The blue wire -12 is used for this purpose.

    • @karlbirkirflosason8190
      @karlbirkirflosason8190 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I understand your confusion, it's a bit tricky to think about.
      You can think of it this way: You've got a difference in potential of 24 volts. With some tricks you establish a point between them, and you simply use that as your ground. This leaves you with +12 and -12v on each side. Now if you were to disconnect that mid-point from the ground in your circuit and use the -12 instead, you've have 0 and 24. The ground is just a reference, voltage potential is relative.
      Does that make any more sense?

    • @ElectricalElectronicsProjects
      @ElectricalElectronicsProjects  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah you are right but the volts that starts from 1.2v because of meter has some problem to powered from 1.2v maybe.

      @yonggor 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Karl Birkir Flosason Thanks, i think i understand now. i was confused st by the schematic shown at first which -12v is connected to ground. i thought that doesn't make sense since to my knowledge, 'ground' is always 0v (for the sake of safety and convenient). But it turns out in this schematic, ground is actually the negative terminal (-12v) instead of 0v (which exists among the bundle of wire )

      use the -12v wire with the 12V wires. though adding the -12V will massively lower your AMP output. roughly between 0.5amp to around 1amp max if you do that. the -12V and the 12V joined together make 24V but yeah you sacrifice output amps massively

    The worst PC power supply is around 250W, half of this power is on the +12V line, which is roughly 10A. LM317 can supply max 1.5A, if cooled very efficiently and covering up the heatsink with electrical tape is not the way for best cooling. You're wasting your time with a linear voltage regulator.

    Please help.
    I have 200w psu and when i connect green and black wire fan just kicks for few seconds and it powers off. I didnt connect anything just all yellow black red and orange wires and i have some more but i didnt do anything with them. Please help

      First make sure that black wires are not touching any of other wires maybe that's the reason, if not then there is a problem in a circuit of your PSU.Thanks.

      Electrical & Electronics Projects. well they don't touch and psu wires or anything so problem is in psu

    What is the maximum amp output through that lm317?

  • @francisg1375
    @francisg1375 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    it can not deliver more than 1.5amps 😐, its a waste not to take advantage of the higher current rating of the psu if it were to be connected as a variable voltage unit.

  • @bennyfata1293

    If you just using lm317 it just deliver small current. Very small. Its useless
    You need some extra component to handle a huge current. You need put some transistor (ex: 2955/3055) to deliver lot of current.
    You waste 20amps and just take an one amp? Who needs one amps?

      Fata Benny get your facts straight, he is using the negative 12v rail in combination with +12v rail to get approximate 24 volts, but the -12v rail can supply about 0.5-1a max...

    reglaj foarte prost, irosesti zeci de amperi pentru un lm317 de 1.5 A maximum? in conditii de racire buna ai 1.5A. cu radiatorul ala nu faci nimic. e nul, ca si cum n-ar fi.

      Prasenth true that, and it's pretty useless after using the -12 which is about 0.5 amps together with the max current of the lm317
