I'm not much past the ena dio tria tessera level of modern Greek that they achieved, sadly - but the sound of these words is long embedded, so I'm having a go at the lyrics as sung here. Chorus coming first seems somewhat unusual, and aware that the second verse Ms. Mercouri muttered is missing. But this was originally 1968 BBC primetime, so shortening understandable.

Beautiful Song I remember hearing long ago in Never on Suday. These Greek songs really have something to them and they are so different from what one usually hears. I don't speak or understand Greek but I like the songs and the music.

I was couple of times on a Greek festivals, in the "new world" ,and each time I felt I am almost back to my old country, food, dances, vine, almost everything is so similar.
Last time, an older Greek man, even knew, could tell where I am originally from, just looking at me, and new my language..

Greek ancestors lived in the slums of Piraeus during the late 1800s and very early 20th century but when in 1915, our great, great-aunt Marika Papagika, was discovered in Alexandria Egypt; brought to America life changed for some of us... [The guitar player George, is her husband and the leader of this band the Athenians from Athens, Greece.]

Glad you like this clip of Nana The guitarist is George (or Yorgos in Greek) Petsilas, Nana's first husband and leader of the group. George and his friends were singing in night clubs before they joined up with Nana and became her official backing group. The group changed members after a number of years until Nana and George separated, when the group finally disbanded. I absolutely loved all their collaborations and thought her best years were when singing with the original Athenians.

This is simply wonderful. Brings back fond memories of my one-week tour of Greece in 2006. Aboard a ship on a quick tour of the Greek isles of Hydra, Poros and Angina, I can still vividly remember two friendly Greek dancers, a gentleman and a lady, teaching me the basic steps of this graceful dance, with bouzuoki players doing the music. Thank you for taking me back to Greece, my favorite country, through this posting.
