I'm with you! Unfortunately, I don't think we're ever going to see that. It's my understanding that it was shot on video, so there isn't a piece of film from which to take a high resolution digital scan. And the effects were done with a video toaster, and there are no models available for the any of the modern rendering software. So someone would have to recreate ALL of the models and textures and then redo all of the shots and effects. It's definitely doable, but it would take a LOT of effort and wouldn't be cheap.

Unfortunately, the conclusions to the plots from season 1 in season 2 turned out to be less than satisfying to me and then they started to introduce new flat, uninteresting characters with weak cast. The actress playing Roberta Draper for example, can barely speak and don't even get me started on the generic Asian characters and their plot that went absolutely nowhere, I don't even remember their names. At least season 4 had Adolphus Murtry.

Still love these effects and designs. They STILL stand up even after all this time. One thing I loved about B5 designs was that they looked like they were actually made. Like, manufactured properly. You could see each plate of metal on every hull, and because not every plate is absolutely identical, there was shading differences, or differences in metal hue. They weren't seamless, smooth items; they were built from physical parts, with seams, defects, flaws, etc. Very real, at least to me.
Shadow ships are still the scariest thing in space though. Can move in any direction, any facing, fire from any side or piece, hull material constantly reconfiguring and bubbling.... And their scream. And the cutter beam they fire... I never realized just how malicious their attack on that Narn base was; they were done with the planetary base, and they came back to cruelly dice the remains of the orbital base into shattered rubble.

The space ship designs and variety in B5 were among the best ever.
But particularly the Shadow ships were probably the scariest looking ships ever designed.
They were a moment of genius imo.
If the budget and today's technology had allowed at the time they could have been the up there with Ripley's alien.
And speaking of aliens, the actual Shadows themselves were such a brilliant creation and a breath of fresh air from yet another humanoid alien species.
They really could have done so much more with them using today's technology.
Babylon 5 was so ambitious for it's time and the limitations of their budget.
I believe every episode was made for around ⅓ of the cost for an episode of STDS9.
It looks it in places but I still love B5 so much more.

How does computers being more powerful help though. Scenes render faster, sure, but you still have to create the scenes from scratch. Only a handful of scene files have survived from S2 and S3, which you can "just render", but the entire show has probably 15-20 hours worth of CGI across 5 seasons. That's 10 feature films worth of CGI to recreate. It doesn't happen by just pushing a button, that's going to take enormous amounts of man power and years to create. And that's the simple part with pure CGI shots, then we have the issue of huge number of composite shots.

I would love to see some of these updates make their way over to the fanedit community... I know the biggest problem are the composite shots, as these do not exist in higher resolution. HOWEVER, the possible way around those are to REDUCE them in size and create a wider shot around them... thus, when we are in a travel tube, we see more of the travel tube (creating a new effect) and put the old effect at the center in smaller form... similar to the old film technique of painting glass (matte paintings) around a live scene.
Star Wars did this film technique, and it is detailed in "Star Wars Behind The Scenes - Matte Paintings - Star Wars The Digital Collection"
Conceptually, we could take the existing scene, reduce it to its best clarity, and fill in the space around it with matching effects to make it "feel" high definition.

Maybe I'll put something presentable together.
I have some complete ships(or rather subs), some structures, some fragments of environments and terrain(nothing of it complete). A lot of scenes with placeholders instead of objects attached to them. Some composite shots with missing background/foreground plates as well as all of the explosion/fire footage missing(part of some stock collection). All this due to how content was stored and archived. You never had all of the models and scenes locally on your machine, but instead pointed at different content folders on a central server.

I'm watching the latest remastered release with "upscaled cgi" and it looks naff. If they still have the original lightwave scenes why the hell didn't they re-render them for the bluray. Compared to todays cgi, many of these models have less poly's than found in games nowadays couldn't have taken that much rendertime/cost to do but it looks much better than simply upscaled original videotoasted cgi.
Great show, don't let the, arguably too-early-for-3D level cgi deter you. Thoroughly enjoying rewatching it after all this time.

The Sharlins, Vorlon craft, Narn and Centauri ship designs hold up well enough, but that Narn station needs a remodel, Shadow crab-o-wars need better materials/shaders, and White Stars (thankfully not featured here) just need a completely different design to look good outside of SD.

Cost - it would cost nearly as much to redender the footage as it would to make new footage from scratch for an completely different show - perhaps if they set up a pipeline to do it - such as made a side story set in the same universe that could get some people in place to do it then it might be feasible "eventually" as I mentioned in another post there is a shot deconstruction tech available now that can make CGI Meshes movements and shot plans out of finished footage that helps the process a fair bit - so I'd say well ask again in 2027 and it might be perfectly feasible to see an 8K upscale release then.

I own the DVD release, was a little disappointed they didn't clean up the footage at the time (looks like a VHS dub with all the artifacts and minimal post cleanup). I figure I still got good value on them though, as I've watched them several times over.
BSG (Battle Star Galactica) did space battle differently, they had silent space battles with background orchestral music, that was really interesting to watch too.

    • @BobbyD262
      @BobbyD262  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, I have distinct memories of watching the show back in the 90's and the cutting from live-action to CGI was always very jarring. Lack of grain was some of it, as was the sudden smoother movement of the CGI running at 30p, versus the 24p of the live-action film. These are so easy to fix now, but I don't know how they could have done it 30 years ago. I suppose they could have rendered the effects at 24p, printed to film, and then scanned it back in like the live-action footage, but I'm sure that was FAR beyond the budget and time constraints of production.

And if all the external CGI shots are remastered, that's half the job. Then it's just a case of rescanning the original film in at 4K and re-doing some of the VFX. I'd so pay to crowd fund that. It does highlight an issue I have with CGI. I find the edges and surfaces too perfect and the colours to solid, when you look at something with your own eyes it is never perfect. I am colour deficient and a lot of the new CGI makes things look so unrealistic due to the lack of slight colour variation that normally catches my eye.

In all fairness, the original effects are from 25 years ago and produced on a very small budget. Nothing like it had been attempted for television. I consider it more of an artistic interpretation than a photo realistic one very often. And I am sure they never anticipated it being watched on a 70 inch screen. Even so, you can’t deny the beauty and the smoothness of motion that is actually better than several other TV series that followed it.
