In an emergency you may have to struggle for hours or days to make a fire. Just like DC has been teaching us all down through the years, the first thing you need to do with that fire is make char material so that your next fire will come much easier. If I’m ever in such a predicament, I will tear off the hem from my 100% cotton denim shorts to make some emergency char cloth. Let me show you what that looks like. The best char material , to me by far , is denim. I roll swatches like you would a fire roll and char it wrapped. You can get a cigar sized ember very quickly
I still like cotton monks cloth for my char cloth. I roll small pieces that will fit in a mini Altoids tin, char them in another tin, then transfer and carry it in the Altoids tin. It’s cleaner that way. The monks cloth catches a spark better than anything I’ve tried and with it being rolled the spark spreads to a large ember quickly. That small tin is enough to start at least a half dozen fires.
I have done this before too. Pants cuffs, tee shirt sleeve hems and waist bands. I wondered if it might work better than the usual, single layer of cotton fabric. Gotta be sure to char it thoroughly but it seems to fluff up a great bunch of fine fibers that are quick to catch an ember.
@ you’re the guy I learned about char cloth from in the first place. Have made me experiment with things you teach us. Lots to learn from your brief videos. Thanks Dave. 🙏✌️
I recently cut up two pairs of old jeans to char. 😂 I don’t wear jeans anymore so I thought char would be the best thing for them. Edit: the only thing I threw away were the zippers and inner pockets. 😂

Didn't know you watch Dave Canterbury ! Learned tons from him 🫡
Yes, for 12 years.
If it comes to start a fire, you're simple the Best David!
I always enjoy seeing your hobo stoves in action. Being an old scout master I always like watching the fire come forth. 😎
I understand because, I do too.
Let's not Hem And Haw about " Denim Hem " , it makes fine Char , David proved it ! ! !
LOL! TY!
Denim is one the best materials for charring
I think so.
@@ARAW-__- totally agree
Egads! Those were your favorite shorts
I think I'll keep wearing them, too.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Women have a difficult time understanding this about guys.
It's hard to give up one of you favorite shorts. LOL!!
Excellent brother. 😊
Thank you so much 😀

A lot of people like the rolled.
Another interesting fire making demonstration David. Thank you.
MY pleasure!
Fire master 🔥
Hi David! Provided I am frugal with about that much char cloth, I can get several fires out of it too. Another great demo.
That much could last forever if you only used it to catch a spark, immediately transferred it to punkwood, then snuffed out the char cloth.
That looks like some great char cloth. Thanks for sharing.
Good stuff!
Fire, fire and more fire.
As always,,,excellent !!
Thanks again!

I just threw out a pair of old jeans but cut a ton of pieces to fit my Altoids tin. There was a lot more as I'm a big guy but I have more than enough.
I do that too.
Kinda comes from the same concept I teach my son.. "everything you have can be utilized in multiple ways, it's up to you to figure out all of them"
Improvise. TY!
Have you ever done one on how to find the flint rock?
We don't have Flint or Chert, but we do have Quartz. Search david west Quartz
Now I’m gonna have to get new jeans.
LOL!
I recently cut up two pairs of old jeans to char. 😂
I don’t wear jeans anymore so I thought char would be the best thing for them.
Edit: the only thing I threw away were the zippers and inner pockets. 😂
Those inner pockets are of synthetics and won't make good char, as you already know.
David keeps this up he's going to be wearing booty shorts or Daisy Dukes soon
LOL!
Why not just rip a back pocket off to char and keep your pants complete ??
My hem was already torn, Yes a pocket, belt loops, maybe just the small pocket inside the bigger pocket, etc.
