Of course, Valve doesn't like where Microsoft is going with Windows and Valve doesn't want their destiny tied to a sinking ship. The future is mobile, and Valve would have no place on Android / iOS with these store fronts' cuts... only one way forward then, that's why Steam tried Steam Machines and now Steam Deck.
My girlfriend is Australian, and it's sucked seeing the country be seemingly forgotten for the longest time. She personally ended up giving up and ordering one through Kogan around a year ago. I am SO, SO glad that the wait was because they were working through setting up proper logistics over there- their past partnerships to sell their hardware through EB Games has left MUCH to be desired, with insane markups and huge delays. Hopefully we are only on the up-and-up from here.
My basic thought is just go ahead and buy one now. Resell value should hold pretty decently and you'll get your money's worth now. But I'll probably do a video soon on whether or not you should buy a Steam Deck in 2024-25
I still have the LCD. It does what I need it too. Personally I'm just waiting for a beefier steam deck 2. If you have nothing get an OLED. If you have an LCD model wait for the deck 2. That's what I'm doing personally.

Metaphor on low graphics runs well and still looks decent on Deck for me, with a 15W power limit getting rid of most fan noise while seemingly not affecting FPS at all? At least, as far as I could tell.

I'm in Australia and honestly anybody that wanted a steam deck could get one pretty easily. Anyone I know that wanted one actually has one, including me. At the time, it undercut competitors like the ROG Ally. With the official local pricing, that price gap grows by like $300-600 depending on which device you're comparing. The handheld space is already competitive, but to see these things starting at $650 is bonkers.
There's been retail sellers for the steamdeck in Australia for a year now. Bought mine on Kogan 3 months ago. Granted, it was clearly an import as the charger wasn't an Australian plug.
Steam OS 3.6 Bios Update, FA0131 is unstable in my Steam Deck LCD, to the point where I launch a game and completely freezes, if you experience this rolling back to FA0121 fixes the issue, but the "battery improvements" go away.
Tried out The Precinct's Demo today, and was very pleased to see it has a 'Handheld' graphics preset! I've not tried it on the Deck yet, but had a great time with the demo on my PC!
Here, in Australia, our consumer protection laws treat physical and digital goods and services the same. You own the physical copy of a game just as much as you own the digital copy. Every store plays by the same rules, and you can't just stoll up and steal back something you sold to me. That's illegal by all definitions of Australian consumer law.
That still would refer to the license of the game. Perhaps there are limitations on when such a license can be terminated. Still, conditions for termination of a license are laid out in the EULA, usually only because you redistributed the game or other logical reasons.

10:35 Actually they do have some DRM games that only work via GOG Galaxy, or at least the multiplayer components which can be the entire game sometimes. I don't think NMS works without galaxy login for example.
9:21 to be fair this is also the way most game systems work nowadays, I mean I have a fair few games on my switch from back before the deck launched that were just a code in a box or you put the ps4 game in the drive and it’s like one year while I download that game to your drive. Sadly it’s just the way of the world except under niche conditions were you actually get the game the on the disc or they give you the file like GOG heck I wouldn’t be surprised if DVD/blu-ray end up trying this at some point.
A 2tb sd is nice and all but what is the usable space? Drives me nuts when they claim a size and it's short by 40-80gb. Best price/performance I've found is the team group 1tb pro cards.
Dragon ball sparking zero on the steam deck with 40 fps is a miracle, its been a fun experience and hopefully we'll find a way to group up and play online
I hope the SD will not just be a 40% improvement, but hit like 200%. It's a lot, but i really hope that they'll manage and maybe add a 30W docked mode.
Dang definitely upgrading to that 2TB SD once the price comes down or it's on a good sale. I just found out about a sandisk 1.5TB SD card. I just happen to run into it while I was looking at what prime day had to offer. It had a sweet 40% discount and I was able to get it for like 90 bucks. It's slower than their 1TB Extreme card but I personally prefer the storage space over the speed since I mainly only keep smaller games that are no larger than 20GB and roms on my SD card
I'd buy on GoG if it were cheaper and do regional prices/sales. Yeah, piracy is free. But I can afford enough to buy some games and support the devs I believe in.
Worth noting that even when you were buying games on physical media that's effectively just you buying a license to the game. Think about all those Windows installer CDs; they're useless without the license key, regardless of the fact that it's physical media. The upside of physical media was that it was difficult to revoke the license from individuals, though it did happen occasionally with games being pulled from shelves like Too Human.

I absolutely love my SD, I still have my 64GB deck I bought around March 2023. Im lazy so I have still not updated my SSD and just use SD cards..i really gotta upgrade the storage soon😂. But I dont have a PC atm and I absolutely love my deck..it can handle the majority of what I throw at it. Granted im not crazy about graohics needing to be top notch and 60+FPS at all times. Like Throne and Liberty just came out and Im fine with it on Medium/40-50 solid FPS, etc. Most games 2020 and before, I can run medium/high 40+ stable and most newer games 2021/22 I have no issue running low for 30+FPS, obviously depending on what the game is. I know everyone is different in that regard though, 30FPS can seem slow to some while it seems perfectly fine to others. But at those AUD prices...I really do feel bad for them, especially 2+ years down the road.
We need steam box or steam console with steam os. 1080/60 or 1440p/60 capable hardware. Then devs/studios will hopefully then jump on board of supporting stems os/Linux more. There also Rumours they working on vr capable box.
Why not just use a regular gaming PC that launches steam in big picture mode automatically? You can even install Linux on it if you want. It's basically the same experience
But why? You can get a PC, fairly cheap too (plenty of good gaming builds for 500$ new, with RX6600 and such) and install Bazzite on it. That's literally your Steam console.
@@miuletzmitzu6641 Yes I know could build one. I have my own built game pc. But Prices for cpu and GPU here are still kinda high. And 4090 is only one not cut down but it’s bomb ready go off or cook it self lol. Not worth it.
@@miuletzmitzu6641 Gaming PC handhelds are also nothing new. Same for gaming HTPCs. That's why Valve already tried years ago with the Steam Machines, after all.
The problem with Steam Machines was the fact that there was way too much hardware to optimize for so it would only make sense if they sold a single SKU, which in this day and age is nonsensical so the Steam Deck is a better option.
The transparency is good. It was already the case for a long long time, but maybe more consumers knowing, especially casual consumers talking about it, will put pressure on stakeholders to move away from DRM.
THIS this is exactly why i love steamdeck its been a few years and still valves cranking out updates to performance and the os its not a ship it and move on to the next project affair

GoG does NOT sell ONLY DRM free games. They bowed to big publishers a long time ago and after consumer pressure, started notifying when DRM is present.

When buying a game, you should own _your copy._ Just like when you buy a physical book or whatever. The alternative would be to rent it. And while that should still be possible, it need to be 100% clear it is a different thing. Also, while I strongly support the freedom of contract, it should only apply if both parties demonstrate a full understanding of the contract, which is just not the case for all the 100s-of-pages-long EULAs and ToSes out there!

Ownership of a copy and ownership of the copyright are not inseparable. You can own a copy of something without owning the copyright, thus without having the right to make more copies of it for distribution. As far as EULA enforceability goes, there is basically no statutory law on the subject other than general contract law, which usually requires a signature or an in person agreement. However, case law regarding EULAs has generally been settled in the direction of what the jury or judge thought of as reasonable, rather than what is directly laid out (or not laid out) in statutory law. Generally EULAs in the US were considered completely unenforceable until _ProCD, Inc. vs. Zeidenberg (1996)._ However, in that case it was found that Zeidenberg had used information that ProCD had compiled at great expense, but was not copyrightable (basically names, addresses, and telephone numbers), and was republishing it at very little expense to themselves while undercutting ProCD's prices. This feels obviously unfair to ProCD, so the EULA which prohibited doing this was found to be enforceable (even this decision required an appeal to a higher court by ProCD). You can easily see why the court found as they did. ProCD was the company that invested in the aggregation of the information, so they are the ones who should profit from its availability. Most case law in regards to this subject ends up being decided in a similar way. If a EULA asks for something reasonable, then it is found to be enforceable, but if not, then it won't be. There are obviously unenforceable terms to the point of being silly that you could slip into EULAs and which would be found not to be enforceable, such as giving up custody of your firstborn child to the company CEO, or some such thing. However, there are also things that companies can try to slip in which are just inappropriate, such as forbidding the publication of a negative review, or transferring the ownership of the copy to someone else. In any case, a EULA is not required to exist for a piece software in order to use it. Plenty of software has been sold with just the protection of copyright law. EULAs are just something that software companies add for their own purposes. Rarely do they accomplish anything that copyright law doesn't already enforce, other than granting extra rights, such as having several people be able to use a program on different computers at the same time, which is normally prohibited by copyright. Of course, digital distribution is treated differently, as I have said before.
the whole battery life thing does not surprise me at all as software gets improve and becomes more optimized it need less power because its not brute forcing things to work so its more a byproduct then anything at least that's how I see it (I base this off the idea of two identical cars one fined tuned one not witch would run better)
copyright, ip, and by extension DRM will make about as much sense as a rain barrel in the desert when you consider the simple fact that every thought a human could possibly conceive has already been considered at least once during the course of history but we have no way of knowing. There is no such thing as an "original idea"
steam still better there are cases when the game is remove you can still download and play your remove game. remember ps5 they can remove games on your library with no reason if they like it
Valve Index 2 VR/XR HMD! Or Steam Deck 2.. hell make it even better! BOTH! And BOTH working.. imagine having a VR headset powered by the steam deck! Oh boy oh boy!
yeaaaah, Junk Store was completely wiped from Steam Store, I guess it would be expected that Valve don't want other stores to be used instead of theirs 😥😥
I love GOG and I have hundreds of games there but they will also have to add that clause Steam added already since you are still just buying licenses there. That's just how it is these days. You don't ever buy software directly even if it's DRM free.

No clickbait in the video title this time. Thanks!
It is a little... The battery life improvements haven't actually unlocked yet?
Interesting. It sounds like Valve has more hardware plans than just Steam Deck 2. Hopefully we'll see something in 2025.
Deckard, deck 2, and a steam machine. Possibly all as a system.
@@Healthy_Toki This, and probably also an official Steam Controller 2 with trackpads.
If buying a game isn’t owning then pirating isn’t stealing
You're buying the license to play the game, without it you're committing a felony
And taking away our games is just as much as a crime as it is for us to take the games we own
I would like to thank you in general, Rich! All the important (steamdeck-related) topics in a nutshell. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Germany
Man, hearing them talk about new generations makes me nervous on if I should just wait for those or still plan to get the current OLED model…
There's always gonna be fomo dude. Just wait for the steam deck 3. Or the steam deck 4 just to be on the safe side.
@@dandiaz19934 Valve can't count to 3 so just wait for the 4
@@dandiaz19934I think that’s silly. If you are always waiting for the “next best thing” you’ll never have anything. If you are going to use it for a few years before upgrading, then it will totally be worth it. If you wait 10 years for the steam deck 4 to release, then you’ve wasted years on your life pining for a device that might not ever come out.
Hitting 100k would be a great Christmas gift!
Getting there! 🎅
Metaphor on low graphics runs well and still looks decent on Deck for me, with a 15W power limit getting rid of most fan noise while seemingly not affecting FPS at all? At least, as far as I could tell.
Metaphor has ultra wide support though so... Def playing that one on PC
@@thacoolest13 Too bad the game looks like an uncoherent mess on PC because there's no antialiasing, not even 8k resolution is saving it. At least on a smaller screen that the Steam Deck has it's not as distracting.
Blur vs pixelation age old dilemma
@@reisshep Graphics aren't really a deal breaker for me. Is a bit weird that its not an option, but I'd much prefer to play any game that supports ultra wide on the pc
This is your friendly reminder to change your background music.
I think it'd be cool if the steam deck activated a different started movie depending upon what the last game was you played deck It knows what the last game you played was and plays a startup movie based off of it.
Don't be sorry for your puns, be proud of them!
It's been a while but I distinctly remember GOG changing their terms to _also_ sell DRM protected licences.
Just tested the steam deck for the first time last Sunday at Pax Australia, definitely gonna get mine this November.
I want the deckard for VR. We all know they are working on it. Im hoping it launches with a half life game but I can't rely on that.
Steam OS 3.6 Bios Update, FA0131 is unstable in my Steam Deck LCD, to the point where I launch a game and completely freezes, if you experience this rolling back to FA0121 fixes the issue, but the "battery improvements" go away.
Can’t wait to see you hit 100k🎉
Soooo close 💖
Tried out The Precinct's Demo today, and was very pleased to see it has a 'Handheld' graphics preset! I've not tried it on the Deck yet, but had a great time with the demo on my PC!
Now where's that official Brazilian launch, Valve?
for the improved battery they should just make a new one which we can just swap out for the old ones
It's not about them stealing it back, it's about them not offering the ability to download it again by taking it off the platform
That still would refer to the license of the game. Perhaps there are limitations on when such a license can be terminated.
Still, conditions for termination of a license are laid out in the EULA, usually only because you redistributed the game or other logical reasons.
@@anonymousx6651 Generaly speaking, what's considered a good or a service under Australian law is defined by the payment method, not what the international for-profit company puts in their EULA or TOS.
Any item, digital or physical, sold under a one-time payment is considered a good and can not be revoked, taken away, or have access to it restricted.
Some free and all subscription based payments are considered services, and that's when stuff can start to be restricted as you're just renting stuff at that point. That's why I hate the idea of GamePass or PS+.
Valve has already been in hot water with the ACCC, and for them to legally operate in the country, they have to follow our laws and recognise our rights as consumers. Same with many other online and physical stores.

10:35 Actually they do have some DRM games that only work via GOG Galaxy, or at least the multiplayer components which can be the entire game sometimes.
I don't think NMS works without galaxy login for example.
Waiting for the Next Fest to drop soon for my own game which has a demo out!
great video as always! Can't wait to get the 10-15 percent extra battery life, that'll make my titan quest sessions a little longer :)
What Switch games were those? The only physical Switch games I buy come with the game on the cart. I prefer that.
A 2TB microsd card? Finally! I can record more than 10 minutes of 16K VR180 video with my homemade camera. (JK I use an SSD.)
I’ll gladly buy a Steam Deck 2
I’ve skipped this generation of consoles in favour of Steam Deck and not looking back
I hope the SD will not just be a 40% improvement, but hit like 200%.
Ok that not been able to count 3 was funny but I still want a portal 2.99999999999 or 4 -1
🤣
Yeah that was funny
Neon Portal Scientifium 2.0 + 1.0: You can NOT into cake
It would be neat if the Steam Deck gets a third generation called the Steam Deck 2+1 eventually. 😆
shoot valve been such a good guy recently I been forgottening about GOG, before steam deck i was probably 75/25 steam gog but because the deck and it rekindling my love of metroidvanias its probably closer to 90/10 now
I absolutely love my SD, I still have my 64GB deck I bought around March 2023.
Trying to wishlost the junk store but I can't find it on steam
We need steam box or steam console with steam os. 1080/60 or 1440p/60 capable hardware. Then devs/studios will hopefully then jump on board of supporting stems os/Linux more.
There also Rumours they working on vr capable box.
Why not just use a regular gaming PC that launches steam in big picture mode automatically? You can even install Linux on it if you want. It's basically the same experience
But why? You can get a PC, fairly cheap too (plenty of good gaming builds for 500$ new, with RX6600 and such) and install Bazzite on it. That's literally your Steam console.
@@miuletzmitzu6641
Yes I know could build one. I have my own built game pc. But Prices for cpu and GPU here are still kinda high. It’s just be nice of Valve released a official steam box/console with steam os. Then more devs would slowly jump on board and support more. Instead of windows only bs.
I would love upgrade my old GTX 1080ti. But even 6900xt here is still $900+ Canadian or more. Prices are slowly coming down but still not enough imo. A 3090 is still $2100+ Canadian lol make no sense. More then new 4080 which $1800+ last I check my local computer store. And wouldn’t touch any RTX 4xxx as they all cut down version at primer price. And 4090 is only one not cut down but it’s bomb ready go off or cook it self lol. Not worth it.
@@miuletzmitzu6641 Gaming PC handhelds are also nothing new. Same for gaming HTPCs. The point is that it's as plug-n-play as it gets, plus a defined platform for devs to target (parts vendor, level of performance, etc) the way the Steam Deck has been.
People have also imported a lot of steam decks into Aus over the years so idk how well this will do
THIS this is exactly why i love steamdeck its been a few years and still valves cranking out updates to performance and the os its not a ship it and move on to the next project affair
10-15% extra battery through a software update is kinda crazy fr.
Switch OLED brand new is AU$540 atm $1050 price tag is insane on 2 yo hardware
Anyone in Australia who wanted a Steam Deck has already bought one through other means.
Im in Australia and bought a Steam Deck off Ebay a year ago to satisfy my urge for new tech and portable gaming.
I hear about Sillent Hill works fine if you disable Vsync
Almost bought red dead for my switch cause I wanna replay it today, good thing I held out now I can get it on my steamdeck
australian here! the prices for the rog ally/x, msi claw, and lenovo legion go have been MORE inflated than importing the steam deck over the past year or so. the rog ally x is about $1500 AUD here! compared to the steam deck oled's $900, it's still a better deal. the steam deck oled that i bought imported from the uk was only $1099~, so still cheaper! people WILL buy the steam deck here.
Valve is just cutting out the middle man in those regions. They are not doing store fronts. And I feel certain that is always going to be the case.
GoG does NOT sell ONLY DRM free games.
They bowed to big publishers a long time ago and after consumer pressure, started notifying when DRM is present.
Happy for the Strayas out there, patience paid off after all.
Now for what really matters: Brazil when. I'm guessing December 2026 by the cadence so far? Please Gaben. Bring your so-called "infrastructure" here. Don't leave us in the dark again.
can not wait for a 2tb extreme card letsss gooo
When buying a game, you should own _your copy._ Just like when you buy a physical book or whatever. The alternative would be to rent it. And while that should still be possible, it need to be 100% clear it is a different thing.
Also, while I strongly support the freedom of contract, it should only apply if both parties demonstrate a full understanding of the contract, which is just not the case for all the 100s-of-pages-long EULAs and ToSes out there!
Australian here! So glad i will be able to get the steamdeck 2 when its announced and not have to wait until a retailer here gets one years later or have to buy and send from another country with the wrong power cable 😅 finally 😭😢😅😊❤
Will probs get a Steam Deck and PS5 during Christmas sales. Will make good gifts.
You covered the Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered but you coulda mentioned that the TR Survivor trilogy $9.02, Anniversary $0.97 , Legend $0.98 and Underword $0.98 are all on sale. All 6 can be had for $11.95
As awesome as it is for the AU peeps, it’s honestly a bad investment with it being this late in its life, but glad it opens the gateway for the next gen deck
A Valve home console would be pretty sick..
Can't you just dock the deck and it's essentially a console?
@@davidgesell ya, you can..but a more powerful console that just works when hooked up to a monitor/TV would be nice..
i played sparking zero offline on the steam deck and it is going a 60 fps (or so it says). is it running slower internally and displaying at 60?
i am not noticing it. i did notice FSR made it unplayable for some reason.
If sameone knows please let me know. i'm about to finish the story mode and take the plunge online
The lever they should pull with AMD is frame gen
Thanks for timestamps
Just curious from an editing perspective. Did you change your color grading? Things have been looking a little unprocessed C Log lately.
I'd love to see a SD2 behave like a switch with the ability to play through TV as an option.
The Steam Deck already does this. Any dock or usb c to HDMI cable works. 🤷♂️
@@dewinter1411 Right!? Do people seriously not know this is an option?
@@davidgesell I guess you're right, but I assumed it must've been it a bit easier with the switch since more people use that function. In either case given the age I'll be waiting for a sequel with better performance/battery.
When is the official release in India? 😢
meanwhile all the other regions still waiting for the official steam deck launch: 💀
Still an amazing system am playing dragonball sparking zero runs great after a tinker in the desktop settings
Gave looking crispy now days 🤑
Would be great to have a way to play my steam library in the event of something happening to Valve ,all their datacenters , the internet in general or society and I know in the event of the last two playing vidya is the last thing on the survival to so list but anyway ... Would be nice to know that i payed my money for a perpetual license usable for ever and not just some ones and zeroes that can just be erased and everything will look like we never even had a deal.
Pirated copies exist
I want them to drop a standalone VR headset that was rumored for the longest time lol
Also, a big win for GoG given how they been operating since day 1. I need to use their GoG Galaxy launcher more often tbh (and look into getting a high capacity hard drive to backlog my libraries).
What's ironic is that ubisoft made watch dogs 2 which is about how companies track and record your eating habits to sex life and sell that to other companies like insurance, employers and tells the gamer how wrong that is and you have to put an end to it. There's too much irony here
I like ur channel. Good news and well presented
Any information for Indonesia?
Well done with the Aspire joke!
If Alien Isolation 2 doesn't come with VR support out of the gate, I don't even wanna know
Malaysia when 😅? The shipping price is 😂
Oof - how's the pricing on competitors where you live?
steam still better there are cases when the game is remove you can still download and play your remove game. remember ps5 they can remove games on your library with no reason if they like it

yeaaaah, Junk Store was completely wiped from Steam Store, I guess it would be expected that Valve don't want other stores to be used instead of theirs 😥😥
I love GOG and I have hundreds of games there but they will also have to add that clause Steam added already since you are still just buying licenses there. That's just how it is these days. You don't ever buy software directly even if it's DRM free.
Yes! Give me all the terabytes...
I don't get it Sparking Zero is running great on the deck, playing it constantly
