- In this video I bring you along as I service out a new to me 2012 John Deere 35D Excavator. In this video I replace all three hydraulic filters as well as all the hydraulic oil. I also service the cooling system by draining and refilling the coolant. This is also the last thing I have to do before going out and using the machine for the first time.
-Enjoy!
This is going to be the best maintained mini-ex on the market. Even better than "dealer maintained".
Satisfying series to watch; speed-up editing made sense. Now Mrs O can start her side hustle of septic tank maintenance, repair, and service! 😂
Now remember, many of us want to watch you dig the tree stump. Thanks, Eric, great series. And, hello from Florida. Now a constitutional carry state.
Free tip Friday. If anyone ever has to pour from a bucket like Eric did, put the spout at the top (12 o'clock) and it won't chug like that and it will come out smooth. It feels unnatural to have it like that, but it works. It's a little more challenging to get the initial liquid into the hole if smaller, but once you do it is great and much faster.
I have seen this printed on the lids of buckets before(with an image) and the guy still cusses cause the oil glugs out 😏
@@bluegrallis I haven't seen the image before. It works better for me, so I figured I would share.
This is the technique I use with Costco Almond milk containers. Works like a charm.
Yeah, notice he’s got the spout at about 10 o’clock and once the fluid level got to there it stopped glugging. Bit easier to aim starting at 10 and it didn’t glug too much
Eric that machine will think all its birthdays have come at once , great job
Nice video.
I see the neighbor took care of the problem on the homestead, but the solution required bringing the mini excavator home and testing it out. 😜🤣🤣
Don't ask don't tell is the policy where we live. Just lend a hand if needed 👍

And HIDE..the Evidence !!
😉
@@garymallard4699 It's hog boilin' time.
Well done. Remember that on occasion, according to Andrew Camarada, things will break for "no reason". Be prepared! 😀
lol, Andrew is not the most gentle equipment operator
😂😂😂
Yep
I like the “ factory install wood block” to help hold down the battery!!! 😂. I always enjoy working on projects that the previous owner reinvented factory parts.
Nice job 👍. This JD is going to appreciate the new owner!
Hope so!
Can't wait to see this machine in action! I'm jealous, now I want one!👍
The way JD trained me to do it, was to let the Hydro system sit for several hrs after a drain and fill after moving implements around, to be sure aeration has settled b4 topping off the system.
A very nicely done series' Eric!!
I do this with everything mechanical that I buy. My wife thinks I'm crazy but I am the 2 nd owner of a 1958 IH 330 utility tractor that runs like a top. The paint don't look good but mechanically she is perfect.
Can't wait for the test dig episode and keep on doing the right thing.
My 80 year old neighbor has a Case 580 Construction King Backhoe 1960's? Starts with no glow plugs in the dead of winter. Crazy. Idles and runs like it's new. He's got 4 8n Fords that look like hell and run perrrfect.
I have a 1958 350 row crop.
The previous owner may have bought that hydraulic filters and all the other service parts when he bought the machine back in 2012 and stored them until he got to 2000hrs but changed the engine oil and filters more often than the hydraulic filters maybe.
Nothing better then doing all the maintenance right after you buy new Equipment to make sure you know it's done Eric O - After Hours
Not sure why I am watching this as in my future no mini excavator is in site,,,,,but watching you wrench on something you are definitely not sure of is entertaining
That JD does not look as if it has been worked very hard! Great shape for the year.
Nice to know that you have a baseline and know exactly where your maintenance is. Good luck with it, Eric!
As a Retired Operator You make me Proud about TLC for Equipment Super Job
Did the previous owner buy more then one of them filters in 2012 when he bought the machine and just put in new old stock 2012 filters when he serviced it 🤔 possibilities @Eric O - After Hours
Good job on the fluid change, when I do the hydraulic filter on my skid steer after pulling it I use a clean rag with a strong magnet wrapped up in it before wiping the bottom of reservoir if there’s any metal in the bottom it will get it.
New Toys! Dig up that Stump now! Cheers, Eric from Colorado!
Man after my own heart key to keeping something working is maintaining it! Great Job!
Thank you for sharing. Your attention to detail is inspiring. There’s not many people in this world that care as much as you do.
We want to see you working with it Thanks
Coming soon!
The way you say, “Contact” at 5:00 made me literally laugh out loud. While I don’t have anything close to this and likely never will, this was a very entertaining video and appreciate all of your content!!
Excellent, I know you were really itching to use it for work!
We have the john deere hand pump that attaches to their 5 gallon buckets for topping off our farm tractor. Works pretty decent...
This clunky old diesel sounds better than half the cars you got on camera in your shop
im so glad that your showing this. Ive heard of to many ding dongs that by a premade lawn mower or generator take them home and fire them up and theres no oil in them and burn up the engine. ding dongs.
Hi, Mr. O. The main takeaway I got from this is that I respect John Deere more than before. I had seen some bad press. I think that the John Deere designs are better than average. I can see why the company suggests that people use John Deer parts. Any company would do that of course, but I see some justification here. I hope, without any justification, that John Deere is not gouging its customers. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
What a great toy! Love all these maintenance videos on your new 35d excavator. You've done all maintenance spot on! Enjoy...
Great video. Just and FYI. The leftover hydraulic fluid left in the bucket. Get rid of it. Where I work we have critical hydraulics and the manufacture of the hydraulic components warns us on using hydraulic fluid that has been exposed to the elements and stored. They recommend either not filling until you use the entire contents or dispose of any fluid that is remaining in the container. I am not sure the sensitivity of the hydraulic components of a John Deere mini excavator, but might be safe than sorry. Just a Free Friday Tip. 😁✌
Those little Hitachi build machines are very good and that's low hours.
With your care she will last you a long time
Nothing like the smell of hydraulic fluid in the afternoon. I miss my life on the farm.
16:20 it’s just new old stock! Maybe he got all the filters when he bought the machine and sat on them till service….😊
Suction filter is always like that, it was set up correctly. The factory glues the oring in, normally its a white glue. Normal service on the suction screen is 4000hrs, if oil sampling is used and Hyd oil is extended drain. 2000hrs on the main hyd filter or 1000hr if Hydraulic hammers are used.
I think that’s one of the coolest toys ever, Mrs O and the kids on a day at the beach, Wow. 😃👍
Maintenance is cheap in the long run. People don't want to spend the big money on fluids and filters but it pays for itself, keeps the machine healthy. I use OEM filters and fluids whenever possible
When factory sets the rods they are set for OEM fiters
This is cool 😎! Hope you show us you operating it. 😊 thanks for taking us along!
Can u show how to adjust or change the belts?
I have had a radiator cap fail on the negative side. Had to be one of the only times a radiator cap kicked my butt...it would not come off for anything.
Mr. O, hope the neighbor took care of the intruder on your property. Now, I know why you purchased the 35D. Great for digging holes for the bodies. 😂😂 Great vids on doing the maintenance. 😊👍
I'm looking forward for the videos coming to show how much easier it is to remove engines with this new tool
Eric dont forget the final drive gear oil.
My manual says change hydraulic oil every 6,000 hours of operation. I have a 2013 35D with 2900hrs on it. Should I change it anyways? Also, what's the benefits if any?
Be sure to put any extra JD hydraulic fluid in a vault for safe keeping
I usually pour the oil in through the filter caps in stead of through the fill cap just like you do!
any possibility you could list the part numbers for the filters?
Next is doing some work with it. I can't wait to watch.
May want to check the pattern changer lever to make sure it moves freely.
does it have a swing drive gear box? iF so you should change the oil on it.
It's nice to have good neighbors
just wondering why you didnt do a flush before refilling with nice new coolant
where did you get this Pilot filter, cant seem to find a link for to purchase one
You look very cool sitting in that machine. I bet you would look even cooler in one of those big ones they use on gold rush. Looking forward to seeing some vids of you putting the deere to work.
So I wanted to have some coolant on hand for a Deere 3039R, just for topping off if needed. Checked the manual. It says use "Cool-Gard II" or "Cool-Gard II PG". Way below that it says "Avoid Damage! Don't mix ethylene glycol and propylene glycol coolants." Does the manual say what coolant the tractor comes with? Nope, cause that would be useful information. Call the dealer; after they CHECK, answer is "ethylene glycol". (BTW - these videos are very useful for that tractor as well. This are the first videos I've seen where someone actually recorded changing the fuel filters, re-priming the fuel system, etc. start to finish.)
If it's not too late, while the machine is clean... take a wire wheel and go over the underside and clean up the rust, apply paint etc. The machine will then be just about as good as new and will pretty much stay that way .
It appears to be in pretty good condition for the hours. It looks like it may have sat for a while, too. If that's alge in the fuel, you'll need to treat that before it becomes an issue.
Damn,,, I just knew when you said you were taking it home you meant my home ----then you said taking it to your home ---drats---. Oh well this will be fun to watch. You better record the antics old man !!!!!
Did Eric get a new Tundra? I thought his was black and I noticed in another video when he was going to the junkyard a white hood.
In my dreams I own a mini Excavator under 8,000 pounds, with a cab, AC, heat and a hydraulic thumb. Not for another tool to service, but to put to work around my acreage. 😎
Always excited when taking care of a new toy.
Have you read your manual before doing this work? If it's the same as my 35G model, you don't have the arm set correctly, hence you have put too much hydro oil back in. And you didn't bleed the system after changing the fluid or pilot filter....
It's fine.
Like a good neighbor, stay over there.......
Great video as always super entertaining @Eric O - After Hours
These are the things we do with every used purchase...go through and change all of the filters and fluids, inspect and lube as needed.
Original factory filters ! More evidence the seller was full of hot air. I wouldn't bet on no sir, "is there anything you need to know" before using it since the seller has been wrong about much this far. I'd hope the seller was as loose with the sales price as he was with words about the service and maintenance cycles "he had performed".
I can only imagine Deere John branded hydraulic oil ain't cheap, our industrial parts store sells a rebranded Chevron AW46 I forget the cost per pail. The most important hydraulic filter is the pilot filter it can cause you a whole lot of ass aches. Its the only filter in the hydraulic system that is pressurized hence its in a bomb proof canister. Hydraulic oil contamination usually comes from attachments like rock hammers or brush mowers.
Will you make a video showing you doing some work with it?
I cant wait to see what building projects you have in mind using your new equipment on Eric O After Hours!
I really enjoyed this series. Looking fwd to seeing it action! Looks a neat machine.
Eric, do you not have an 'Air Lift' yet?
When you change the coolant, should you blow air pressure into the radiator at the cap to try and evacuate as much of the standing coolant as possible?
Does this machine have a Yanmar engine? I did see it said Hitachi on the plastic from the suction filter. I thought all the small Deere equipment was powered by Yanmar.
Éric O is playing with his new toy, all he needs is a big sandbox. 😊😊😊
Check the bucket pin it might need some shims
Can only guess that your mini might have grease fittings on main cab bearing. Recommend that you spin cab and grease that bearing in many locations. Lots of grease on that bearing is good. Some users don’t realize to spin and grease in different locations to fully lubricate that bearing. Good luck with your excavator..
He did that in a previous video
Over greasing the slew ring is the most common cause of slew ring failure... it blows out the seal.
Use the maintenance guide for slew ring and pinion (they're different) grease intervals and amounts ~
Little advice running trackhoe slow and steady equals fast
I'm thinking maybe that Steeler was put on from the factory and since it was never maintenanced it was never removed they might have put it on maybe for shipping
Anyone else hear Eric go,”Wee” as he was spinning around in the cab? 😂
I did for him.
I am totally envious
That's a good running lil beast! I suspect the filter WAS changed... New-Old Stock. If he bought it new, he may have bought the service kit at the time he bought the machine. Your NEW filter is 2 years old... ;)
If you want to talk about expensive hydraulic fluid, Skydrol LD4 which is for commercial aircraft is around $9700 for a 55 gallon drum.
I don't believe it was stated but "the deer" are they a sponsor? Or not yet?
Just curious; what brand of baby lotion do you use on her? ...giggle...
Engine/motor sounds really good even through the internet !
Another fantastic video also where do you get those Pink/Red rags
Peace and love from Clearwater Florida
You’re way too excited about this! Lol. You deserve it. Thank you.
Good looking dirt !
Why not fill the oil filter basin with oil before installing the lid?
Refrain from calling the guy a liar right off, your proof is only proof that he purchased the filters in the year he purchased the machine as I did when I purchased my LT3800 and it was years before I reached my first service interval. The both the filters looks clean so why doubt that he did what he said? Be better than that is all I’m saying, God Bless and have a great day.
Hey, Eric: I asked this before [the Caddy engine swap vid?] and I'll ask again; why not use your vacuum tool for refilling the cooling system? And will that tool work to refill the steering system when doing, say, a PS rack replacement. Looking forward to your comments. Thanks!
Dude you are a stickler for measuring like me. I'm guilty because of being a machinist for 30 years.😂
What's your plans with this thing?
Any flat spots in your track rollers ?
Many years ago in Egypt I was told they had no word or expression for maintenance, just broken or repaired. That was a local that told me, so who knows for sure.
Didn't we establish from the first video that the guy you bought this from was full of it?
I would imagine that rod was intended to be attached to the cap rod through the hole with a nut on each side. This would seem the logical setup.
napa filters work fine
Check the air in the spare. Most people forget .
