You are the only person I trust to answer this question. I will be fishing in Northern Ontario in September and the place we are going is a large lake with dozens of islands and creeks and it is my understanding that it it is easy to get lost and becomes very difficult to find your way back to the cabin. If I make the cabin my waypoint, will the Garmin show me the way back?
I will give you my honest opinion...Yes the Garmin will get you back, but I would practice with its GPS features and be 100% comfortable and confident in how to use them. 2nd If I was in a remote area and getting lost is a possibility I would do 2 things...have a 2nd form of functional GPS to get you back...whenever I am on big water I always use my fishfinder GPS's to mark a return point and I also use my phone as well. ( I have phone signal on the water) Just in case something happens. Also look into a Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs) they could save your life if you truly get lost or need help. I have one on the boat, and also take it with me when I am out hunting just in case.
Really helpful and easy to understand tutorials. Really appreciate the tips and tricks! I just picked one of these up 2 days ago for ice fishing. I got it 2nd hand with no owners manual. I'm wondering if there is a feature that allows me to record my route of travel taken from waypoint to waypoint as I travel on snow machine through the woods from spot to spot and if it has this feature I could create a trail map over time. Thanks in advance! Keep the vids coming!
Yes, you can record a route with it...and honestly the basic striker 4 is pretty good for that since it does not show contour lines or any other clutter, you can just see the traveled tracks only if you want. I would however invest in a dedicated GPS device for travel if using it in the woods...especially if the area is "big" woods and more remote, or help is far away. The striker will work for small scale stuff, but I would not rely on it for big travel.
Absolutely amazing your knowledge of this Paul!! Whenever we get a chance to go out and get some of them stripers I hope we take your boat, because you obviously know how to find the fish!! 😁😁

That’s my question as well. From the video, the way he’s marking waypoints is by the boat’s current position. But if you wanted a make a waypoint for a specific rock pile you passed over in your history, doing this method will be completely off.
Sorry I missed this comment fellas, but it is very simple....so on the traditional sonar screen, all you need to do is when you see the rockpile or brush on the screen (regardless of position) simply press the left or right arrow key to bring up the cursor...this will also stop the screen, move it over the item and press the waypoint key...it will mark its "REAL" position.

First let me say I appreciate you taking the time to help people like me understand this unit. I am having a problem with entering my own Navigation numbers. I understand how to do it. I am using Google Earth to get my coordinates and it comes up like 37degrees 21'46.37"N 76degree 50'38.23"W . The problem I am having is I cannot enter this into the unit like this so I guess my question is where do I get GPS coordinates for an area I am wanting to fish. Thanks for your help.
Got this figured out after a nights sleep. If anyone else has trouble with this you can go to Settings, Units, Position Format - under this you can change the way the unit takes the coordinates.
Can I use way point marker button when I set out from my local boat ramp to mark home. This would be useful so I can always navigate back to this starting point at the end of a fishing trip .
At 4:46 you start to explain entering waypoints using waypoint maps, but I didn't and don't see any map, you just move an X across a blank screen. Are there only certain models that come with or can download maps that show an actual map? otherwise how do you know where you're moving the X to in relationship to where you want to go, say 20 miles away I just bought the Striker Plus 4 and have never used a fish finder before . Any clarification would be helpful
This is a basic Striker 4, which means no maps and no contour lines. If yours has the mapping and contour line functions, then this would be a great option for marking waypoints, which is why I still wanted to explain it. I would never use this option on a basic Striker 4 without some form of map or contour lines. Hope this helps

From the current position and you hit the waypoint button , when you get to edit your waypoint, do you have to enter a name for the waypoint to be saved, or can you hit the back button to go back to previous screen? Thanks for any help, been struggling with this setting 25 lines on a night of fishing.
Hi i have purchased a garmin striker plus 5cv with gt20 transducer and i installed it on a 13 foot boat and use it in sea water. What is the maximum depth reading for this unit on such boat? And what is the maximum depth it will show fish in these conditions pls? Thanks for your feedback
th-cam.com/video/1E17jbK03sI/w-d-xo.html This should help....take the max depths shown and IMO find that the real usable range is a bout 75% of the max.
Can you save waypoints o demo mode? I’m a newbie and it appears I can not. I tried several times. I heard you shouldn’t use your Garmin with transducer on when you are not in the water and that’s why I’m trying to input gps coordinates on demo mode.
How do you do a sonar history rewind on the Striker 4? Like If I mark a nice weed line on my unit and want to mark the exact structure where the weed line is can I scroll back through sonar history and use that as a waypoint?
It will record your track automatically, so you can. Another option is once you find your weedline, start recording a specific track to save, since you can save tracks just like waypoints.
I apologize for bugging you with a question. I am in the process of modifying my new Lifetime Tamarack Angler 100 fishing kayak and adding the Garmin Striker 4. I wanted to mount the transducer as close to the front (inside) as possible but the hull flare would have the transducer slightly to port or starboard to be on a flat surface. the surface levels off horizontally about 12" behind my seat. Where should I mount?
Watch my video on mounting the transducer with duct seal....should solve your problem and let you put it anywhere you want...just be sure the duct seal goes all the way into any grooves and such, you can not have any air gaps.
Awesome video and tips yet again brother, don't have Garmin but Lowrance Elite series and it's very easy to use also. We were thinking of adding a second unit and was looking at Garmin as the boat came with a Humming Bird but gave it away as we didn't like it lol. Two units to compare for accuracy also one on sonar and other on structure scan. Anyways bro, another great and informative video. Thank you
Good day managed to put waypoints in without any problems + routes ,but I'm struggling to go to my waypoint on the water it confuse me the purple line shows in different direction . i am familiar with a gps that I used many years ago ...old one had a cursor which you followed . Can you please do a video of what is happening on the screen as you go to your waypoint or maybe send me a link if it allready exist
Great videos. Is it possible to delete multiple waypoints at the same time? My tracks have been adding hundreds of waypoint that i dont want saved. Even when the tracks are deleted the waypoints are still there. Any help appreciated.
The only way I know id to delete 1 at a time or delete all of them. I thought if you delete a track it removes the points as well, so I will have to look at it again when I get out on the water again.
I have a question to clarify what you said regarding waypoint GPS maps, and moving the little circle with X to your waypoint location before entering it. I find this a bit confusing, I was under the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that the GPS functionality of the Garmin Striker 4, means that when you're off shore and you want to mark the spot your fishing over, the GPS automatically works out where you are, you only need to select and name the waypoint. What you were saying above appears to suggest that it's not an automatic GPS location finder. You got to look first on the contour map, then work out where you are precisely by sight, using the arrow keys to enter the waypoint? Have I got this wrong? I have never used a FF before, I am looking at getting the 4cv or a larger Garmin. I want to be sure I am comprehending exactly how GPS waypoint selection works, aside from manually entering coordinates. Great video, thanks for posting.
I was showing different ways to use it...normally if you go over a spot and want to mark it, just hit the waypoint key in the lower right corner and it will drop the point there in your exact location
Yes you can since the GPS function is very basic and simply uses points and coordinates. However I would think a GPS made for land navigation may work better depending on your needs.
Great vid! Do know if there is a way to upload waypoints to the striker 4 or to the newest Vivid 4CV? I have a bunch of them in a gpx file and would hate to have to enter all of them manually!
Don't think you can load them that way...but I do know you can use the brown and blue wires to link the units together and transfer data between 2 units. I have personally never done this...but the directions are in the manual.

so can i put a track mark from the moorings to my fishing ground that might be 2 miles away? and if yes then if the fog comes in and you cant see a thing i dont have to worry is that correct?
Yes by marking multiple points or recording a track you can...also the Striker will automatically lay a track down as you move. However I would never want to rely solely on this unit to keep me from hitting objects in dense fog for safety reasons.
@@1Cast1Fish yes i understand that as you need a radar for that i am a full time fisherman but i also have a play time boat just for fishing but i think by having this set its as good as a plotter no point in buying both cheers
@@1Cast1Fish what about the transducer can i put that on a bit of aluminium and bolt it to the stern like on a bar but the bolt it up near the top of the stern and the thing is like just a wee bit higher than the keel? would that be ok? theres no room on the out board saw one some one put it behind the propeller no room on the honda 10 hp cheers
Not really sure I understand, normally the transducer is mounted on the transom , on the right side in most cases. If mounted on the keel or a strake, the water will be turbulent and you can get a bad image. Never seen a transducer mounter on a outboard.
If price was not an option I would definitely look into the Echomap line, more features and mapping options, really depends on your application though. How will you be using it?
For your application the Striker 4 Vivid would be a good choice, if you fish smaller lakes and such. This would give you the opportunity to use the quick draw contours to map your area lakes as you fish them.
I do to...when I am in my boat on big water I always mark the start point on both sonars and google maps on my phone as a back up. Never can be to safe out there.
Thank you!Super useful!i have a Garmin Striker 4 , never used yet.Soon i will use your lessons.Does it worth to use fish symbols ?until i will get used how to read better the images? Thanks
Use them with the actual sonar image behind them, so you start to learn. Using the symbols are a great way to start learning, just don't rely on them forever...keep on learning.
The Garmin Striker 4 Plus & CV models have quick draw contours...basically they will take the depth data while you are on the water and build a custom contour map . If you want preloaded contour maps or mapping cards....look at the Echo series.
I don't have a Echo Map...but I am going to be getting a Striker 4 Cv later this year hopefully. I also have plans for a basic setting video for the Striker 4.
Thank you for all your very informative videos! I have learned tons. I am curious about the routes feature and didn't find anything on 1Cast 1Fish. I am navigating a shallow river and would like to create a safe route. Your past videos showed how I can mark waypoints that I will use to mark hazards like logs but I want the routes feature so I can have an easy ride without much worry. Specifically can you alter a route after is has been saved in the Garmin, or is your route recorded permanently?
I really do need to show how to do more with the route features...I personally don't use it much, but I know other do....As far as altering a route...yes you can alter a saved route or even change it on the fly.

Glad you like them!
Can you save waypoints o demo mode? I’m a newbie and it appears I can not. I tried several times. I heard you shouldn’t use your Garmin with transducer on when you are not in the water and that’s why I’m trying to input gps coordinates on demo mode.
Yes just follow how I show you to enter coordinates in this video...they will be saved even in Sim mode.
@@1Cast1Fish Thank you again. I write a weekly column in the Melbourne (Arkansas) Times and I will include your channel in my next article.
I may be a little late, but there are arms that you could use. There are some that can mount to tracks or straight to the kayak.
Thank you
On my boat I run Humminbirds...one on GPS/Map the other on sonar and side imaging. You can do a lot at one time with 2 units.
I take it that this helpful info also works well with the Striker 4 plus?
Yep
For example its a new lake and you're trying to find your way back to the boat landing how do you do that make sense?
Before leaving the dock press the waypoint key and save the waypoint. You can then use it to get back
Good day managed to put waypoints in without any problems + routes ,but I'm struggling to go to my waypoint on the water it confuse me the purple line shows in different direction . i am familiar with a gps that I used many years ago ...old one had a cursor which you followed . Can you please do a video of what is happening on the screen as you go to your waypoint or maybe send me a link if it allready exist
Sent reply and links in your other comment
Nice info thanks
You are very welcome
@@1Cast1Fish understood. thanks and great to see your videos.
Thank you
with this gps function is it possible to use it off the boat on a land vehicle ?
Yes you can since the GPS function is very basic and simply uses points and coordinates. However I would think a GPS made for land navigation may work better depending on your needs.
Great vid! Do know if there is a way to upload waypoints to the striker 4 or to the newest Vivid 4CV? I have a bunch of them in a gpx file and would hate to have to enter all of them manually!
Don't think you can load them that way...but I do know you can use the brown and blue wires to link the units together and transfer data between 2 units. I have personally never done this...but the directions are in the manual.

How do you set up audible fish alarm
You can set a audible alarm for fish. th-cam.com/video/OeYto1XDcl0/w-d-xo.html check out the section on Alarms...around 10 min mark
Hello . The Garmin Striker Plus 4 in the function System Language has the
option Portuguese Brazil ?? Thank you and congratulations on your video .
Yes it does....Go to SETTINGS...SYSTEM....LANGUAGE....Scroll to Portuguese Brazil
Thank You
Great video
Thank you
Helpful. Thanks👍💪
Glad it was helpful! Thank you
I don't want to enter coordinates, I want to know how to mark a spot as i'm on the lake and I'm catching fish there so I can get back to that same spot next time out. So how do I mark a good spot once I find it???
Press the waypoint key, this will let you create a waypoint...you can then edit the name or icon from there.
Can you mark the dock as a waypoint so I can find my way back to the dock?
Yes you can...Check these out, should help

Check out my video on the screen going dark...its pretty easy to remember what to press to fix it.
Good info videos👍
Thank you
Well done!!
Thank you very much
Do you have a video reading in the water?
What would you like to see? Do you mean navigating on the water?
Great tip
Thanks
so can i put a track mark from the moorings to my fishing ground that might be 2 miles away? and if yes then if the fog comes in and you cant see a thing i dont have to worry is that correct?
Yes by marking multiple points or recording a track you can...also the Striker will automatically lay a track down as you move. However I would never want to rely solely on this unit to keep me from hitting objects in dense fog for safety reasons.
@@1Cast1Fish yes i understand that as you need a radar for that i am a full time fisherman but i also have a play time boat just for fishing but i think by having this set its as good as a plotter no point in buying both cheers
Agree
@@1Cast1Fish what about the transducer can i put that on a bit of aluminium and bolt it to the stern like on a bar but the bolt it up near the top of the stern and the thing is like just a wee bit higher than the keel? would that be ok? theres no room on the out board saw one some one put it behind the propeller no room on the honda 10 hp cheers
Not really sure I understand, normally the transducer is mounted on the transom , on the right side in most cases. If mounted on the keel or a strake, the water will be turbulent and you can get a bad image. Never seen a transducer mounter on a outboard.
I bought one now I dont have the draw map on the main page. Any help
You can customize your main page, you may have moved it or hid it. Check on the main screen under customization of the home screen.
Is there a way to track your path when trolling?
Yes a "track should appear on the screen showing where you have been
Very helpful info :-)
Glad it was helpful....thanks
Which model of the striker 4 would you recommend if price didn't matter
If price was not an option I would definitely look into the Echomap line, more features and mapping options, really depends on your application though. How will you be using it?
Bass fishing on a pelican 2 man boat
For your application the Striker 4 Vivid would be a good choice, if you fish smaller lakes and such. This would give you the opportunity to use the quick draw contours to map your area lakes as you fish them.
I always mark first the way home. Sometimes the weather gets bad, or it get dark fast on me. It’s my safety check.
I do to...when I am in my boat on big water I always mark the start point on both sonars and google maps on my phone as a back up. Never can be to safe out there.
Ty so much!
Thanks :)
It doesn’t seem like my garmin striker 4 has contour maps. What is the cheapest garmin I can buy that has contour maps?
The Garmin Striker 4 Plus & CV models have quick draw contours...basically they will take the depth data while you are on the water and build a custom contour map . If you want preloaded contour maps or mapping cards....look at the Echo series.
Is yours a striker 4 plus that you did these videos on?
@@RJ-cc1fz This is the basic Striker 4 in the video. I do have a Striker Vivid 4 CV as well, that I will be doing video's on in the future.
1cast 1fish can u review or teach how to setting for garmin echomap 45cv
I don't have a Echo Map...but I am going to be getting a Striker 4 Cv later this year hopefully. I also have plans for a basic setting video for the Striker 4.
Thanks!!!!!
Welcome!
You love your Garmin lol
You bet I do
How do I delete the track but not the mark?
The marks that are part of the track are deleted when you delete a track
@@1Cast1Fish This questions was asked a year ago, have you done a tutorial for creating a route yet? please advise. Thanks your tutorials are very informative !!
@@scottbliss2091 this Saturday a video on tracks will go live. I even show how to follow past tracks and make tracks into routes. Next up will be a dedicated route video as well.
have a quotation pls, while I'm done with the device setup and once restart it all setup gone even marked waypoints and language, is that weird or could be handled ?!
Does seem weird....are you sure you are completing the save function? Highlight save and then be sure to hit the check mark...like shown in the video. If its not working, try a factory reset and then try again.
