Tone Sessions: Nick Johnston - TC-100 - “Poison Touch”

  • Mesa Artist Nick Johnston spent some time at the Mesa factory to capture some tones and video with various amps and songs from his latest album, Remarkably Human. His song “Poison Touch” is an excellent showcase for the dynamic, touch-sensitive potential of the Triple Crown’s Lo & Hi gain channels for expressive single-note playing. Nick moves effortlessly through barely clipped sections with softer attack, all the way into heavier snarl and grind… sometimes just with heavier-handed attack, and sometimes just with a slight volume increase on the instrument.
The Triple Crown TC-50 and TC-100 both offer a wide range of truly classic low and medium-gain crunch and solo tones, paired with the sweet articulation and three-dimensionality of Mesa circuits and quality components. The TC-100 adds width, punch and headroom to the already popular Triple Crown format with it’s 100 watt power section and big-iron transformers, while also expanding the range of use-ability into lower wattages and volumes via the Multi-Soak™ Power Attenuator. Attenuation from 3, 7, 20, & 50 watts means the TC-100 can be scaled to any playing environment or situation from quiet home-playing, recording, jamming or full-blown stadium rock and beyond.
Recorded with a Schecter Nick Johnston Traditional signature guitar with Schecter NJ Atomic pickups into the TC100 and a 2x12 Rectifier Vertical Slant cab with Celestion Vintage 30s. Mic’d with a Shure KSM313 and a Shure SM57 and mixed 45% KSM313 and 45% SM57 and 10% stereo room mic.

I like how he pluck his notes, the legato mix with bend sounds like as if the notes are narcoleptic, wanna doze off but it cames back to life after he plays the nx note. This guy is the new best guitarist out there. Also, his playing reminds me of Guthrie Govan but after he had a good fine wine and getting a little tipsy after that.

Good eyes, Greg! Bright guitar with fresh strings (Strat and single coil bridge pickup, often rolled below full output on guitar volume), and a bright amp with EL-34s. Similar settings were used during the TC50 demo with blues-oriented Strat player. Extreme settings for sure, but some amp & guitar combinations are like that. thanks for watching. :)

The MKV can be set to 90, 45 or 10W per channel (mix it up however you like), and you can easily stick a pair of EL-34s in there (sounds killer, actually). You just have to use Boogie 34s (it's fixed Bias) and flip the Bias Select switch on the back.

That sounds really nice and woody.......Not to many high gain amps out there that make single coils sound good......seems like they always need a pedal/boost to get things going. Boogie has been making single coils sound good for years. My Ecstacy 101A doesn't sound this good with single coils.

@@BurntMcgurnt yeah I've tried to get into his music but I just can't. He's undoubtably an exceptional guitar player. His melodies and his lines just lack emphasis for MY TASTE. Like theres no 'deliberate-ness' to his playing, more like he just happens to pass over those notes.
As compared to Aaron Marshall (Intervals) where his lines are emphasized and take the foreground in the music. Nick's leads kind of get muddied in the backdrop

I would say something different - IMHO his entire Remarkably Human album is very well composed and all the licks just fit perfectly - I love it because the melodies are simple yet mixed with techically advanced playing but not simple showing off... However, when I listen to Nick's live renditions of his songs it basically sounds lke (as you decribed it) noodling over a pretty backing track. he's the composer, he can do whatever he wants but it simply doesn't convince me at all - his live playing just sounds a bit too careless;) Big respect for Nick though;)
