    I do agree that the “reset button” is in most cases not a good way of writing but in the case of Persona 2 it works so well for multiple reasons. Not only because we got EP a year later but for a short time (and only for a short time) like someone else already explained it showed that the main villain was successful this time around and showed that there friendship could not solve all problems and they even had to sacrifice it so that everyone could live normal life’s again

  • @diegobrando5171
    @diegobrando5171 ปีที่แล้ว +86

    As someone who's played both persona 2 games, I'd say you can't really rank one without the other being included as well. Sure the whole reset thing feels like a cop out of you only look at it through IS but once you go through EP it ends up being so much better

    • @edwardsuou
      @edwardsuou ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Also the ending of IS isn’t bad on its own, even if you played back in 1999 you would have heard a sequel was coming right after but regardless you feeling defeated and toyed around is the whole purpose of the ending
      Nyarlototept laughs at the party because they’re naive and think friendship will resolve anything and then they lose everything and they need to let go of that friendship forever
      In a way the villain won and then the result is frankly pretty obvious since it’s already established the rumors are Almighty so they would use it to reverse the world. In a way it’s a trade-off of the player giving up on his progression to give a chance to the characters to live an alternative life apart from their loved ones, it’s so bittersweet and also there are a tons of good things different from the beginning of the game but the sorrow of the lost is still there.

    • @zomboids2100
      @zomboids2100 ปีที่แล้ว

      You say that; As if expecting the majority of the fanbase nowadays knowing IS/EP even exist. Let alone the ending of one leads to the second part in which that reset was essentially going to break thanks to certain events that transpired.

    • @diegobrando5171
      @diegobrando5171 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@edwardsuou Fr, what I like about it is the fact that its the game that challenges the whole idea that friendship beats all the most compared to the other games in the series. Even in EP there's still a hint of melancholy considering the fact that Maya now bears the weight of knowing but not being able to converse to Tatsuya about it.

    • @thanatosxmesiah
      @thanatosxmesiah ปีที่แล้ว

      agree, haven't played EP because can't find playable translated version to play on emu for me but seeing recent brief of what happen to tatsuya, it's a really good plot twist and make the title meaningful because you will misunderstood the meaning by just playing 1 game. it also make it bit darker than persona 3 to me as causality are most likely still happen

    I honestly really disagree with ranking IS separate, persona 2 is very clearly made to be a duology played back to back, and genuinely the end of IS is one of my favorite moments in the series, you lose, here is your last resort, swallow that bitter pill.

      Persona 2 IS ending: Bad guy wins which results in world being destroyed and so heroes along with philimon power recreate a new timeline in which they never met/lose connections.
      Persona 2 EP ending: Bad guy is stopped but the timeline is threatened due to protag being a paradox that cannot exist in their world. So protag essentially leaves to go back to his current timeline which the world was destroyed.

    My personal favorite is Persona 3s. Basic opinion, sure, but there is a reason why it’s so popular of an opinion to have.
    In the case of Persona 4 Golden’s epilogue seemingly only being there for “flair,” I’d direct you to HidingInPrivate’s incredible Persona 4 analysis series, specifically the one about the use of color in the game (you should probably just watch the whole thing, though; to say it’s well-made and comprehensive would be the understatement of the year).

    • @iantophernicus6042
      @iantophernicus6042 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HidingInPrivate's analysis series honestly deserves more praise than I can accurately put into words, but it feels almost surreal to see just how well written the social links and character arcs were, now that they can be taken in isolation, rather than all happening at different times as in the game.
      No shade on the game at all on this one, I just found it a lot easier to digest when seeing each mini arc, without having to keep track of everything else going on, on top of that.
      As someone who is yet to go back to P3FES, I have to wonder, aside from new features and story content, is the original P3 something that can still stand on its own, or is it better to go through P3FES instead?
      I don't want to ask if it's still worth playing, as if it isn't already an amazing game, but I wonder if there are any gameplay features or story elements in the original that might not have made it into P3FES.

      He didn’t really talked about that, the epilogue to the phantom thieves in Royal is stellar all wrapped around masterfully in that scene where they discuss what they will be doing next. The last whole animated cutscene is just not that important, it’s just a calm chilly and realistic farewell because everything was already said.
      Also the post credit scene is absolutely a way for Atlus to have Akechi’s fans happy however there’s no reason to think Akechi survived and a thousand to think he died so if you ask me Joker was just daydreaming, I mean the next scene he sees himself in his Phantom thief attire in that same window.

    Rant warning:
    P3 has the best ending imo. It is the only ending in the series that made me cry like a child. P4's ending doesn't make me feel anything and the P5 ending is just boring as sin. Not to mention the movies did what they were trying to do but executed them way better. When it comes to the media I like I'm a fan of stories that are dark as shit. Not that I'm saying I can't enjoy stories that are upbeat and happy but when you see Makoto Yuki who started out as apathetic as one could be progressing towards finding his purpose in life while having 3 people die right in front of him at his age is amazing. Then when he meets Aigis he was finding his purpose in life that in turn help Aigis shed that robotic shell and become more human which grew to respect one another then blossomed into love. Its cliché as fuck but the way P3 did is was the best way you could do it. Then the way the answer tackled the death of Makoto through Yukari wanting nothing more than to see him again even if it was only a second but repressing it to the point where she snaps at Aigis who inherited Makoto's wildcards ability but didn't have the nerve to show up to his funeral is believable and very real. Whereas Aigis has never dealt with grief on the level of the death of a loved one made her turn apathetic to the point where she didn't even want to be human anymore and become a mere machine is also pretty alright.

    While I personally consider a lot of P3 to be kinda disappointing, I love the ending a ton. Personally hit home for me due to a lot of my own fears while executing it incredibly well.
    Both 4 and IS/EP’s endings are a close second for me. I like how simple 4’s is especially since it’s another more personal one. P2’s only really work together and I think IS’s a bit too extreme and depressing despite the themes, but EP’s being a bit simpler helps balance it out, and both definitely got me teary-eyed.
    Though, I especially like how Personas 3 and 4 try to get a bit more personal for people, since that seems to be a common theme from what I’ve seen. Tends to be a bit more impactful since it’s more realistic and relatable. If and when Persona 6 releases, I hope they take a similar route.

    I loved P5 Royal ending the best because it resonated with me on such a deep level. I was extremely passive and depressed in life, wishing someone could just give me what would make me happy like a job, a gf, friends, etc. Therapy these last few years made me realized that I have to work towards the things if I want to be happy. No magical being in the sky (or counselor in a white suit hehe) is just going to give it to me so seeing all the phantom thieves realized the same thing and each go their separate ways to be happy was such a realistic bittersweet ending than P5 vanilla ending or P4 ending.

  • @artificialaceattorney6822

    I completely disagree about P5's ending.
    A large part of the game is about how the Phantom Thieves have the power to change society for the better by using the Metaverse to steal hearts. Unfortunately, there's a risk of them misusing the power, as seen in the deal with Yaldabaoth, as well as the implication that they'd lost sight of their original goals as of the Okumura arc(which isn't handled all that well, but that's another choice). There's also the question of whether the Phantom Thieves' efforts amount to anything- see how Shido still gets elected and the people don't turn on him after learning his crimes.
    You can see the Confidants as a microcosm for the game as a whole. Changing the hearts of your Confidants' enemies makes the Confidants' lives easier, but they still have to handle their own problems. For example, after you change the Takases' hearts and stop them from extorting Kawakami, she then gets back into teaching with a renewed sense of purpose. In fact, Ryuji decides not to steal Yamauchi's heart, but let the track team deal with them.
    Basically, the final arc is about trusting people to make the right choices and solve their problems without the Metaverse's help. The Confidants helping get you out of juvie isn't redundant; it's showing how each of them has at least a few connections and/or skills to help you out. It's rather significant that Mishima, who used his status as manager of the Phan-Site to stoke his ego, hits the street to gather signatures.
    Royal's final arc is similar. Do you accept a stagnant reality where everyone's wishes are granted or work toward making your dreams a reality in the real world?
    In short, in order to fully appreciate P5's final arc, you need to understand how it ties into the game's themes.

      U pretty much hit the nail over the head of any I love P5 endings so much over all the rest!! Especially Royal. It resonated with me so much because for years I was like Maruki who rather live in a dream world and wait till everything comes to me be happy but recently with therapy I realized I have to be the one to make myself happy and no one is gonna come to magically make my life better. I have to work towards it. I freaking LOVE how each member of the phantom thieves realize this too and make the difficult choice to go their separate ways to follow their dreams. Its one of the most realistic, bittersweet, yet hopeful endings I ever got from a game

      While I have yet to finish a Persona game yet, being in the middle of maxing out all personas for the compendium in Golden and Royal, I have to ask. If you engage with the new characters as little as possible and aim for the original ending, is it better to play the re-releases, or to go with the originals from the start? As hard as it is to find a PS2 and a copy of the original P3 and P4, I'm interested in finding out if there were any gameplay features/story elements that were present in the originals but didn't make it to the re-releases.
      Also I'm still salty that I wasn't fast enough to get Eternal Punishment before the Australian PSN removed the game from the store. It was probs something to do with our archaic rating system.

They could have explored the characters way deeper with the new reality versus old but its solved in like 10-20 minutes with each member and none of them decide against it. 4 wrapped everything up perfectly and in a super satisfying way. I hope if I ever see persona 6, they give a complete ending like 4/Golden did.

    Ummmm,how else were you expecting them to end vanilla P5?
    Shido was taken down thanks to joker and the phantom thieves.
    His incarnation was needed due to him providing testimony to make sure shido stays in prison and the confidants helping joker escape from incarnation was to tie-in to the game's themes of standing up to injustice and inspire other people to do so.
    Joker and the phantom thieves inspired society and the confidants to do so and it was their turn to do the same for him and that makes the ending suck?
    I'm sorry but I just don't agree with that.
    Although I definitely agree with all the others especially your thoughts on innocent sin's ending.
    I love the game but as you said,the reset button is NEVER the right option to end your game,although at the same,I feel that this might have been intentional which is why eternal punishment's ending works so well but that's my 2 cents on the matter.

    As someone who played P5 years back and only now finished P5 R recently, I have to agree with its low placement. Royal's addition destroys any feeling the original ending has to offer by adding a whole month in between of not really satisfying stuff and toning down the sacrifice. Honestly. among the modern Persona, I do agree 4 does it best because the final thing, you, as the player do, removing your glasses, is a great thematic endpoint to the story as a whole. P5 used to have that before P5R. Doing the final goodbyes before the final reveal is a great trick too on the player who just wants to get everything over with thinking.
    P5, and Royal's especially, was super eh. You talk to people, you get a scene which most would skip forward in the cafe. Done. It does nothing for the actual narrative or themes of the game. At least in P3, saying the good byes all sorta leads up to that final scene in the rooftop. They're all to help build up to that final moment. As the first to use this format, the idea feels very deliberate. P5's kinda feels like its just going through the motions.

The game about fighting back against tyranny ends with the party deciding for the world that they know best, that the entire world should be consigned to its miserable existence. Vanilla P5 already shot its rebellion narrative it the back of the head after the Kamoshida chapter (Codex Entry said it best "[waifu] merchandising would be pretty hard to square with a game that would inevitably get to ask the question 'how come capitalism seems to give power to cruel bastard men so often?'") but Royal pissed on its grave. The game (after Kamoshida) can't possibly conceive of a problem that isn't the result of bad individual actors, not broader institutional failings.

      Except people are stripped of free will and forced down paths that Maruki lay down and even these paths don’t lead to maximum happiness.
      Take the Yoshizawa in the ideal world with maximum happiness the family should get back both daughters but because he cares more about Sumire her wish of being Kasumi is fulfilled well Sumire is dead. The family will never get to see the two girls or even properly greave instead they are forced to move on.
      This is the flaw of Maruki reality he is human and will favor some over the others well they cannot choose what they want or even attempt to shape their life. Another example is Yusuke friend who wanted to be an artist but failed and found another path in life that he also enjoyed except in Maruki world he now an artist with his other life being erased.

      @@JoseSanchez-fk9dg You're not addressing my point. Sumire faced the trauma of her sister's death. Fantastic. But what social ill is that emblematic of? My point is that Persona 5 in general and Royal in particular does not understand that there are problems outside the capacity of any one individual to cause or resolve. Take world hunger. In reality, it is a complex issue which will require decades.if not centuries of worldwide dedicated effort to shift the food economy from a system that prioritizes profit over actually feeding the most amount of people. Maruki was essentially given a magic button to relieve the pain of all those starving children. People who would otherwise have to shape their entire lives around finding the next crumb of bread to scoop up are now free to live how they choose in Maruki's world. And the Phantom Thieves force them to live in a life they did not choose for the sake of their own high minded ideals. Game about fighting against tyranny.

      @@technicallythecenteroftheu1349 The thing with Maruki's world is that he is forcing everyone into the matrix basically. where they have no free will and everything is decided for them based on what Maruki knows about what they wanted in the past plus what Maruki himself decides will be better for them. Maybe Maruki's world is in fact better for people whose lives could only improve, but that also robs people of any hardship and freedom to change anything themselves because everything is already decided for them without the ability for them to decide for themselves. Which is why it's a very thought provoking ending because you could argue that it might be better to trade free will for happy idealized lives, but the characters decided that they would allow people to make their own decisions and forge their own futures.

    I... man, I wish I could see and feel P4 the way you got to.
    It felt like it was such a disjointed mess to me, with it's multiple, multiple fakeout endings where it just yanks another final dungeon out and the newest antagonist and everyone just goes "Okay team, this is the final battle!" every time.
    And that... cast is rough. Past a certain point, no party member develops or changes.
    Yosuke through all of mid-game is being pervy towards the girls or bullying Kanji. He stops being homophobic when he... stops interacting with Kanji. He also never apologizes for his actions.
    Teddie exists to sexually harass any and every girl, much to their displeasure and anger.
    I think about the group, and wonder how you can call certain characters friends with each other. What do they like or dislike about each other?
    And by the time the credits roll, I still have no idea. And it makes me really saddened.

    For me, Eternal Punishment's ending felt so contrived, and bad that because of it I can't recommend the Persona 2 games to people. It ultimately makes it come across as if everything was all for nothing, like some kind of Corpse Party game ending. And honestly? The Answer isn't bad at all (tables kicking your ass aside), is a good follow up to the game, in fact does NOT contradict Chidori's survival (despite what people say), and...Yukari did nothing wrong.

      i'm curious as to why you think EP's ending wasn't great. personally i thought that the ending was really good as it just felt very different compared to the other persona entries and the fact that tatsuya had to go back to the other timeline which the world is pretty much destroyed with Sumaru city being the only thing that survived was pretty sad and the fact that IS's cast had to sacrifice their friendship and bonds in order to not let the world end.
