    This is an A4 page so if you print this out on a full A4 page, it should be the correct size
    This video shows the full making of process of my first knife. It's not perfect, but the next one should be better. The knife was made using pretty basic tools easily aquired for little cost
    Most of the processes used I learned about on TH-cam, and most of the materials used were bought from eBay. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments and I'll get back to you
    Materials used:

    6mm brass rod for the pins £4.40

    Wood: Elm (I got it from a friend)

    Making a cutting tool started with cavemen mastering the skill of flint knapping. Now here is that same skill refined to a form of art.
    I have the utmost respect for these craftsmen.

      Colin Thomas honestly, I've made a total of 10 knives and I'm barely better than when I first started. my guess for us is that we both need to refine our techniques and just tough through it. I suggest practicing on shitty mild steel from home Depot to get your technique down and then start moving up to tool steels or high carbon steels. then once you are good with those you have the option to go to stainless.

    I admire your patience. Just one little remark: your really should drill the pinholes with a drill press. It is rather impossible to keep a steady angly by hand. The end result would have looked so much better if only those pins were snug. But again, a remarkeble job well done.

    • @PeterAdamsonKnives
      @PeterAdamsonKnives  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yea first thing I did after finishing this knife was buy a drill press! Check out my other videos to see the difference it made, that screwed up drill hole was the most disappointing thing about this knife. Also using a big hammer drill made the holes even more awkward

  • @jimmygrey6848
    @jimmygrey6848 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    You know, the teeth on most files only cut one way. You'll only dull your files quicker by moving them back and forth like that in a sawing motion. But other than that little nit pick, great work! you should be very proud of your efforts. Nice handle, Could have used the angle grinder with abrasive flap discs to shape that handle though, much quicker than a rasping it.

    • @zaneantoneshyn2495
      @zaneantoneshyn2495 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jimmy Grey cross cut file so it can go both ways

    • @jimmygrey6848
      @jimmygrey6848 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Zane Antoneshyn I think you mean double cut, and whether it's double cut or single cut the teeth still only cut on the forward stroke.

    • @zaneantoneshyn2495
      @zaneantoneshyn2495 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jimmy Grey I will correct myself as I have been wrong. the file only cuts on the forward stroke like you said, but the backward stroke is still used. on the backward stroke no pressure is supposed to be applied so on the backward stroke it can help clean out metal chips. it's unclear in this video if pressure is applied on the backward stroke or not as he sped up all the filing. but if he was applying pressure on the backward stroke you would be correct.

    • @jimmygrey6848
      @jimmygrey6848 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zane Antoneshyn Still, its really the best practice just to lift the file entirely on the backward stroke to avoid any dulling of the teeth. Your files will thank you for it.

    • @zaneantoneshyn2495
      @zaneantoneshyn2495 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jimmy Grey I agree with you completely it's a good thing to practice just in it won't dull them too much if there's no pressure if any at all. But once again it's hard to tell in the video. And I'll take this advice and use it a little later today maybe.

    Nice work! For those saying there's no way that's his first knife, I disagree. Like he says in the description he's watched and learned a lot from TH-cam videos, so its more than possible to produce a quality product the first time (if one puts the effort into watching and learning.) He's probably got some experience woodworking as you can see by the handle he produced -and that type of craftsmanship goes a long way.

    The final result is very good, congratulations, your video proves that with dedication and a little study it is possible to make beautiful knives, in my first knife I used the same file jig, it's a very effective method for a very cheap and mechanical way to do the bevel. Actually you can make many jigs and tools, just using some different techinics and improving others to make knives, but if you're just a hobbyist, if this is not your profession. it takes a lot of practice and experience to make knives with a high technical level with few tools.

    i had a couple suggestions that might help you in the future, in between your pin holes try drilling holes that are a couple sizes smaller... drill as many as you think it might take to sorta even out the difference in weight between the handle and the blade, then when you get your handle scales drilled for the pins go ahead and use the smaller bit to drill several holes about 1/8" or so into the scales, this will aid in a super good bond between the scales and the handle.just remember to keep the holes in the scales away from the edges so that there is no chance of sanding thru.hope this helps you

      LE-Handmade knives is absolutely correct! I'm 74 and my father was a master toolmaker who spent 5 years in apprenticeship before a lifetime at his craft. I am passing on his teaching here. NEVER draw a bastard file back across the work. It CUTS (does not grind) in one direction only. Drawing it backwards can break the hardened cutting edges.
