How To Tax Your New Car Online With Green Slip V5C/2 (2020) GOV.UK

- In this video we show you can tax your newly purchased car online with the GOV.UK website. When you buy a new car you need to tax it before driving it on the road. You cannot transfer tax from the old owner. You can do this online with the green slip. The car will need to be MOT'd and also have insurance on it for the tax to be accepted on the website.

Honestly Love this. Didn't know what I was doing as it's my first car and since I got given a whole red booklet with different coloured sections. Mans a legend as it looks like he's saved so many people hassle of not knowing what to do. Also brave showing the details of the car but has shows exactly what people need

Exactly what I need. Many videos talk about getting a car in UK, but never get into details of exactly how to tax the newly bought. You might consider moving your camera / green slip less for better visualisation.
Compared to the old system this is a doddle You used to have to get an insurance cover note and take that along with your valid MOT paperwork plus the completed car tax form as it was called then to a post office. You then joined a large queue of people waiting for a cashier to become available. They would then read through all the paperwork you had and then manually write your vehicle details on to the tax disc

I have tried for hours to fill in the form following your instructions. The form will not accept my full car registration number or my document reference number.

for the doc refrence number is 12 digits but only allows me to type 11 so yeh pretty cancer

THANK YOU. the picture on the DVLA website is very misleading and why don't they name things on there the same way ? instead of saying 'doc reference number' they could print 12 digit reference number!

Hi, once completed online are you then meant to send off the green slip to dvla?
I dont think you need to do this anymore - just do the online bit and keep the green slip safe until the new document arrives

I am in the process of doing this but i will wait until 1st February . I also need to transfer my private plate over but i can not do that until i have taxed the car . I believe i can tax it 2 days before the start of the month .

When y buy the car in the moment can you stave it to you way home if you have insurance and if the car have MOT and Tax of previous owner
Technically you should tax it when you buy it as it is the safest way and you have to tax it sooner or later
Will make you laugh - found this video because I tried to use my new keeper slip at the start of year 2 of tax (first vehicle and no one told me about logbook stuff, and admittedly didn't ask to many questions.)
Just had a mini meltdown realising it'd take me 6 weeks to get a V5C - turns out the mother had squirrelled away my logbook that got sent to me 11 months ago without telling me, and forgot to give it to me when I moved out.

Hi Delton - OK you need to go to somewhere like "gocompare" or another insurance company to get quotes for insurance. You need to arrange your own insurance with a private company. Insurance is needed to drive a car so if you have an accident then the insurance company can pay for any damage.

Does the tax come into effect the day you pay or as was ur screen from first of the month
The tax comes into effect from when you pay but you pay for the whole month - so if you buy and tax the car on the 20th of the month you pay from the 1st of that month !
@@L663 and if you tax on last day of month you basically get ripped off for a month. They could do it by day increments if they wanted because it's all online data now. Although someone mentioned you can tax a few days before beginning of month but that was for old paper tax disc I think. I'm sure if you tax vehicle in latter days of month you lose nearly a month which if its £20/£30, doesn't matter but if £290 it's not fair...

I think they used to check you had insurance before letting you have a tax disc - but now it is all online you can do them in any order but make sure you have tax and insurance before driving !

Just bought car and the person said he's informing change of owner online how long does this take and can i phone DVLA to confirm switch of owner.
It could take a few days but if you have the green slip you can tax the car straight away
I have the green new keeper slip but the code doesn't work 🤦 just keeps saying input wrong? But it's not lol nightmare

ok yes that works but if i have just bought the car and the log book is not in my name i have just taxed a car thats still not in my name and from what i see on the Gov website changing the name cancels the TAX? so now how do i put it in my name without losing my TAX
Ah that could be an issue.. and the refund will get sent to the old owner.
You really need to go online and tell the DVLA you have purchased a new car first !
Because you've I assume , just acquired the car from previous owner who will send the V5 to dvla saying you are the new owner from let's say the same day you've just taxed it, from the V5C/2 online, so their tax if any remain will get refunded to them and when DVLA get the old V5 it will have you as new owner on it.. Which you have just paid tax on. DVLA will then send you new V5 and a reminder every time it needs to be taxed.

This is not good - you need to write to the DVLA and tell them you have sold the car

I'm a first time driver and I know this might be a daft question but can I drive straight away after taxing my car?
You need to have ALL of the below...
Insurance as the driver
Tax on the car
MOT on the car ( if it is older than 3 years )
License to Drive the car ( if you have provisional license then you need someone with a full license in the car with you )

The transfer takes 2 seconds and it will be valid as soon as you have completed the process

Does it not ask for insurance details?
If the car is insured it will be added to the MID database so the DVLA look up your car insurance status when you apply for tax online...so they do not need to ask you but they do check !
