Kirito realized that they were starting to distrust each other so he takes the blame as the only one who knows the game to keep the peace at the expense of becoming an outcast.
It makes sense it took so long, people are scared and taking their time to avoid dying. Also different groups fighting for authority. Also Kirito’s drip has been used by many character designs, including “eminence in shadow”.
Especially since they all 10000 are stuck on one floor and have to wait for enemy respawn *and* overlevel with low lvl monsters to get safe - a month is a reasonable time, yeah
What’s really interesting is this episode did not originally exist as a part of the web novel/light novel source material. But the anime producers wanted to include the first floor boss fight in the anime, and as a result the author wrote a short story called Aria of a Starless Night. That short story later became canon to the light novel, and ultimately also became the basis for the spin-off Progressive series, which goes into greater detail of what happened in the early floors of SAO.
8:36 I get the confusion but at the same time I find it hilarious that everyone misses what happened there, if Diabel has received enough dmg to die it doesn't matter if he drinks a potion, it's not that he accepted to die and refused the potion, he was already dead
I could be wrong about this, but iIrc potions and crystals worked differently. Potions not only had a long cooldown (and tasted awful), but also had a slow heal-over-time effect, unlike crystals that healed large amounts instantaneously, albeit were much more expensive and only came from higher floor levels. (Crystals debut in the Drop pool for all monsters starting from the 6th Floor. According to Kirito's empirical observations, the drop rate for crystals on the 6th Floor is about 0.01%, increasing tenfold to 0.1% on the 7th Floor. - SAO Progressive) This would explain two reasons why Diabel refused the potion: firstly it would leave Kirito's potion usage on cooldown, and secondly it's likely that the potions heal-over-time wouldn't be potent enough to counter the decaying HP bar/the amount of damage he took from those attacks. It would've been all moot and thus wanted Kirito to save his potion for himself. This would explain why so many different groups were necessary. Having x2 tank groups would allow for rotation. Tank Team 1 would tank the boss and upon reaching low HP, would swap out with Tank Team 2 and retreat to the backlines and use their pots to slowly heal back to full, eventually getting ready to swap back in when Team 2 gets low. I then imagine x2 teams were responsible for DPS at the flanks and the final x2 teams dealt with the Bosses minions.
@@xninjabluexTV Exactly it could also be that and as you said it does make sense considering all the info from Progressive and also just using some common sense. I'm super late, but I'm glad you caught what Kirito did with taking the blame. I just want to give a little more context from the manga that is never covered in the anime. Just before the boss battle, Kirito had a conversation with an info broker (trades for info). A lot of things had changed in the game as compared to the beta. Beta testers were giving out as much info as they could, but some of it turned out to be wrong, resulting in unfortunate deaths. Kirito and many other beta testers knew if their info on the boss turned out to be wrong and resulted in deaths cause of it, the backlash would have been devastating.

So just as the first episode didn't adapt a major character development moment from the LN, a major character development for Asuna was left out in episode 2. Asuna showing up at that meeting was the first time she went out in the world in a meaningful way since getting trapped. For the first month she fell into despair, only going out to kill the same weakest mob to get the funds to pay for the inn and food. She contemplated suicide multiple times. Then, after a month, she finally stops feeling sorry for herself and takes the first step in doing something about her situation. The first step being attending that meeting. She is a complete noob to such games (strict upbringing) which is why she didn't know about names next to the health bars. The Progressive series changes her situation up a little from how it was described in the LN.
