Pingtan consists of 126 islands, 648 famous reefs, 372.92 square kilometers of land area, and 6,064 square kilometers of sea area. It is the fourth largest natural island in China. The largest island in Fujian Province. Pingtan is surrounded by blue sea, commonly known as Haishan. Junshan is the highest peak on the island. Because the top of the mountain is often filled with mist, it is also called Donglan Mountain, so Pingtan is abbreviated as Lan. There is a huge stone on the south street of Tancheng Town in the middle of the main island Haitan Island. It is as flat as an altar. Because the common people call the huge stone a 磹, it later evolved into a 潭, so the county was named Pingtan. The geographical coordinates of Pingtan County are 25°16'-25°44'N, 119°32'-120°10'E, with Niushan Island at its easternmost point. Pingtan is located on the west coast of the Taiwan Strait and is the closest island to Taiwan from the Chinese mainland. It is only 140 kilometers away from Hsinchu City, Taiwan.
