Odors and humidity are two things I hadn't thought of! Great discussion, thank you Sharon!

One downside of hard sided is weight. Larger hardsided luggage can weigh over 10 pounds. That is a lot if you are close to the weight limit for airlines

This is a big one for me and I never seem to hear it talked about, but hard sided luggage takes up so much more space in a hotel room. It takes up double the space as a regular suitcase. This can be a real issue when space is an issue especially on a cruise ship or if you’re sharing a room with a bunch of people. Also if you’re at the airport and need to get some thing out of your suitcase you have to open the entire suitcase to fold it open and then everyone can see what’s inside of it. If you have a soft side you can just open it up partway and keep things private. Even worse, if you open the side of the suitcase without the zipper enclosure, everything will come tumbling out. Then you have to re-pack everything, which is particularly annoying if you are at an airport. And one last thought, when you’re at a hotel, hard sided luggage does not fit on top of a luggage rack so you have to leave it on the floor and bend over to get anything out of it or else use up critical space on a table or bed which requires lifting it off and on anytime you need to sleep.

I'm with you on this. I often travel from city to city and find myself staying at a hotel for a night or two. With Softside it goes on the rack and I just flip the "lid" open and live out of my suitcase. With Hardside You can't do this, and even where you "can", the top half is always trying to push the bottom half forward off the rack o the top of the dresser. I like Hardside, but I wish they made them where the zipper was about 80% toward the top rather than in the middle which is a big p.i.y.a.

I'm a Samsonite junkie. Also, despite my love for matching sets of luggage, I find that what works best for me is hardsided checked luggage (mine is a 28") and a soft sided carry on. That way, I get the best of both worlds, because I REALLY need all of those little pockets on my carry on. I love not having to worry about my clothing getting wet if it's raining at our debarkation port (usually New Orleans!)

Thank you Sharon. That was really helpful ! I decided to go for hard body/2 wheels for the checkin luggage and soft body/4 wheels for the cabin.
By the way, thank you for playing those videos in the background. It was a revelation for me as to how check-in baggages are handled by airport workers.

Thanks Sharon! So many things I never considered. This helped for my upcoming cruise because I was considering hard sided, but for this trip I will stick with what I already have and save the money for our cruise. ❤️

Thanks for sharing these tips. I have both soft and hard covered luggage. Honestly, I love them both. But, like you said, there are pro's and cons to both. Thanks again for sharing this video

because of this video I finally have decided to go with soft sided...I'm so glad you helped me figure out some of the points that are important. I also have always (learning since a backpacking trip where it rained) to always have my clothing in storage travel bags. I though mainly do it when I'm flying because needing to cram everything into my carryon unless my trip is exceeding a week.

Over 30 years of world business/personal travel and a couple of million air miles, I have used many brands and types. I’ve even had top of the line Samsonite hard shell get destroyed by the airlines. For me soft sided is the best combo of durability, flexibility and weight. Spinners on the big checked bags, but rollaboard wheels on the carry-on. Travelpro is my preferred brand. The good soft sided brands are water repellent, but If you are worried about moisture entering the bag just use a garbage bag inside.

Excellent job. Thanks! I've always bought soft-sided because of the ability to stuff more in it, but I have had to replace them, even the expensive supposedly lifetime suitcases because of eventually not being able to clean them well enough.

soft sided: if it gets thrown around, it's not going to crack or break, beware if putting a fragile object because it may break
hard sided: it may crack, but more sanitary and safer (?) for fragile items

We just purchased hard sided luggage before our last trip. It really worked out well for us.

I’m trying to find some great carry on luggage. Trying to not pay luggage fees when flying to port. Have looked at a few from Delsey and Biaggi. Have a wonderful adventure 😊

I only have soft sided luggage. I take about 5 trips a year and I have never had a problem with it pick up oders. Soft sided can be sprayed with Lysol or a rain proofing spray. Spinner wheels are a necessity for me, i a disabled and use a 3-wheel scooter. With the new swivel wheels I can steer my suitcase right beside. It goes in and out everywhere with me including the rest room. You can’t do-that with the old wheels.

If possible never check a bag. Try to go with a 22 inch carry on and a personal bag that can go over the handle. I want to attempt to go down to my 22L backpack and duffel for my next cruise. The main benefit is the airline will typically only mandate a gate check on the roller bags. A soft duffel can be easily squeezed into the overhead bin as long as it just has clothing. I think that traveling light will make the journey easier.

Yes! I will never check luggage again. Last 4 trips - only carry on and personal bag. So much more convenient!

Thank you for sharing ! So now I will buy hard case luggage instead.
Most Airlines only allow carry on bag and luggage for limit at 7 kgs. Is your country have weight limit on carry on?

Good comments on luggage. We have both and on our last cruise our luggage handle (small one not the extended) was busted from the cruise line. Now of course I could of put in a request for damage payment (more trouble than it was worth) but most likely we will be able to use this suitcase on a road trip someday. Thanks for sharing!!

Been on the hunt for some new luggage sets. Currently have a set of Antler hard cases, had them for years now, 2 wheelers and they have held up amazingly, nothing is wrong with them - I just really want some spinners. Recent reviews that I've read of Antler have been quite disappointing, I was also in an independent luggage store yesterday (where I bought my Antlers from on sale years back), they advised me that Antler have since been taken over by a different company. I went on to research Samsonite (I have a nice soft side carry on from them which is really lovely), but again, it's not a spinner. So I seem to be now, more curious about Delsey, might give them ago!

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I have my eye on the Travel Pro Pathways 2.0 Spinner hard-side luggage series. I fell in love with one of the colors, Champagne, and the double-sided packing option. However, I really like the exterior pockets on soft-side luggage. Most likely I will purchase the 21-inch hard-side for weekend getaways, and use my larger, soft-side luggage (with the multiple exterior pockets) for longer trips.

I also think bed bug can affect soft luggage if someone else’s luggage has it.
