  • This year, I'm making my own prompts for Jamuary. I'm doing 5 a week, each of which will explore one aspect of my shiny new and instantly beloved ‪@torsoelectronics‬ T-1 Sequencer! This sequencer truly is an instrument. Hopefully my efforts to learn it will help you explore it as well. Happy to answer any questions in the comments.
    Episode 18 - Jam 4 of 5
Only watch this video if you're super into or curious about the T-1. I'm not super great at improvising with this thing yet and there are bits that drag. And it's looooooong.
Still here? GREAT. I've gone back to the tutorial style for this one, so you can understand what I'm doing, why, and more or less how I'm actually doing it. The T-1 is fantastic for all sorts of improvisation, but if you keep your techno simple it's dead easy.
But of course that's not how I roll.
Short and sweet one tonight. I facilitated a half-day of working sessions today at work, while on the road, and will be doing the same thing tomorrow. So yeah I kind of phoned this one in lol. I'm astonished I did anything at all.
Make sure you check out Torso's own T-1 tutorials! • T-1: Tutorials
    Cast of Characters:
    Sequencing: Torso T-1 (duh)
Drum sounds: Kit from Ableton Live Suite
    Bassline: Roland Cloud SH-101
    Atmo drone: Roland Zenology
    Pluck: Arturia Pigments
    Sequenced chords: Arturia Pigments

So excited for mine to come, what do you switch to go from sending midi for drums rthymic vs synths for melodies

      @captainbleep  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Ctrl-Voicing will let you choose the "Style." For drums and monophonic synths I choose the bottom left button (step 9). For polyphonic tracks I leave it at the default top left button (step 1). Other than that, it's just regular old MIDI. In this video, I've got tracks 1-8 sending MIDI on channels 1-8 to 8 tracks in Ableton. This is how I do drums (drum racks I find to be annoying). Tracks 9-16 send MIDI on channels 9-16 to 8 more tracks in Ableton with virtual synths on them.

    What gear are you sequencing?

    • @captainbleep

Drum samples and various soft synths in Ableton. These same techniques could just as easily be used on any MIDI-capable gear.

Captain, you make it look so easy.

It IS easy… after you put in the time to learn it and get a feel for what the params do and how they affect each other. The great thing tho is that learning the T1 is FUN. Just pick one thing a day to mess around with and you’ll get there!

I don’t see why it wouldn’t. It’s just MIDI after all. Glad you enjoyed it!

This device caused a GAS relapse for me as well. After 2 years of just iPad and midi kb, I bought a t-1

In 30 some years of buying gear, the T-1 has been my best purchase by far.

@@captainbleep im about to sell mine for an oxi one, its interesting for tinkering and powerful as a jam device, but just not enough control for me, per step settings, parameter locks, trig conditions, without those, its just a sophisticated player piano

@@jospehbloseph7172 T-1 does have those things. I use them in nearly every jam. That said, if you seek to specifically control all aspects of your composition, that’s not what it’s designed for. If on the other hand you want to *find* the sound you’re after by turning a few knobs, that’s where T-1 shines. Making music with T-1 does require a mindset shift. But once that happens a whole new universe opens up to you.

@@captainbleep I like to be able to control certain elements and then turn knobs to discover things, but once I discover them be able to do them again. The building of melodies is just very clunky so far, but I’m still learning it. I really wanted the oxi one hut couldnt find one, new or used. So I got the t-1
