  • Join Laura and me as we solve Part 2 of Exit the Game: The Catacombs of Horror, one of the many escape-room-at-home boxes in the Exit series. In this video we open the box and solve the second part of this double-length Exit, where the game is itself deliberately split into two parts, so there are spoilers throughout. I bought this from Amazon, so any opinions expressed are all our own. 😁 Here's a link to the first part of the solve:
    â€Ē Solved! Exit the Game:...
This video is part of a series in which each week we solve a different escape room box - not just other Exit the Game boxes but also Unlock, Escape Room The Game and many others - so please do subscribe to the channel if you would like to join us on this fun adventure!
Do also comment below - we'd love to know what you think of the video, and whether you solved the puzzles faster than we did! If you've tried the game itself, what did you think of it? I thought the first puzzle with the box and string was so clever, How clever are the creators?.Thanks for another great video.

I agree! It really is very clever because of the way each number is viewed from a different angle, and yet is entirely reasonable.

I see Hexed, Bloodlust and Demon were written in the skull's colours. I assume that's how you're supposed to know which skull matches which word.

Ahhhhhhh is that right? We wrote these down on a note and didn't look back. Well then that's really good to know - so that explains the last bit of the puzzle that I wasn't fully sure of. Thank you!!!

Oooooh, great spot! Yes that definitely would have helped. Honestly, there was so much going on in that final puzzle, it's no wonder I was mainly ornamental in the solving process ðŸĪĢ thanks for watching!

I thought Catacombs was pretty fair until the last riddle. There was way too many parts to it, to the point where even after staring at the solution for 20 minutes I had no idea how it was supposed to work. Too many circumstantial clues:
    - color of the pentagram words
    - the size of the candle and stand fitting exactly over the stone field (I absolutely did not understand what the card with the stand was telling me)
    - what direction were the arrows on the edge of the column supposed to point to?
    - nine obscure steps
    - bone on the decoder disk
I thought putting one of the words on the back of the sheet you needed to put the skulls on top of was absolutely terrible game design, and combined with an open flame and having to shuffle stuff around, it was kind of a fire hazard. It also didn't help that I was doing this well into the evening. At least the soundtrack in the app was very thematic and quite good.

      @drgareth  2 āļŦāļĨāļēāļĒāđ€āļ”āļ·āļāļ™āļāđˆāļāļ™

I think the person who translated the game into English didn't understand the last puzzle either, because the explanation on the solution card which we looked at afterwards out of interest (not shown in the video) is TERRIBLE. It barely explains what to do at all, and makes no mention at all of how to choose which word for each skull - despite giving just one word as an example for one skull which does imply there is one word per skull. However I /think/ the idea is you trace all three words for each skull, and the shadow only /exactly/ falls on one skull for one word in one candle location - but the game doesn't tell you this anywhere, whether in the game itself or in its hints or solutions. It's actually a bit bizarre - it's as if it got so complicated they just abandoned it and hoped for the best. Perhaps it all works better in the original German edition, but I haven't looked at it so I have no idea. But nonetheless, if the people making the game are demonstrably unable to explain how their puzzle solves then that's definitely a problem.
I've never listened to the soundtracks, but I probably can't use them in the videos because when I've tried this on Unlock games they end up getting copyright strikes since presumably they license someone else's music for the app rather than write their own; and I expect the same applies to the Exit app music too, although I haven't tested this.

@drgareth Most of the soundtracks in the app are just soundscapes often with a common music track past the 30 minute mark. There are a few where the music is themed, but Catacombs is one of the few that have full music tracks built for it. They commissioned a particular studio to do the sound design, so I think the chances of getting a claim with the in-app soundtracks are fairly low.

@caralynx Ah that’s good to know! I might try it on a future upload, then. If I keep it unpublished for a few days first that should be long enough to see if it gets a strike.

I totally agree about the final puzzle - obviously there's a way to get to the correct answer but there are SO many steps that it's really hard to know if you're on the right track! And if you do go wrong, there's no of knowing which one (or more) of those steps you might have gone wrong on. On the plus side Gareth figured it all out while I was still clueless and thus the moral of the story is that teamwork makes the dream work ðŸĪĢ thanks so much for watching!
