    Going against your power family takes some balls. For a son of a privileged family, Tyler’s courage to speak out against in the name of what is right is really impressive. Integrity is a rare quality that I hope carries him for his life... it’s clearly something he didn’t inherit from his grandfather

    I have worked for decades in Silicon Valley, live a few miles from the (ex) Theranos headquarters in Palo Alto, have dined or had coffee in the restaurants mentioned in "Bad blood," and just last night drove past the nearby home of Ian Gibbons, the ex-Chief Scientist of the company, who, under extraordinary strain between his scientific expertise and integrity on the one hand, and the public pronouncements of his company on the other, tragically committed suicide in 2016. There are several heroes in this story (alas, too few of them), but the courage, integrity, and perseverance of Tyler Schultz is exemplary. He could have walked away, and with his Stanford degree and sterling family pedigree walked into great jobs and have a fulfilling career, but he did the right thing and spoke truth to power. We are all-especially those who would have been harmed by the flawed blood tests from Theranos-in his deep debt.

    It is common sense. The core concept itself is flawed. Blood is colloid (random mixture of liquids and particles). The accuracy of its composition depends on the amount of sample it is tested upon since the mixture wont be homogeneous everywhere. It is basic statistics that to increase accuracy you increase the sample of your experiment so that the average value nears the exact value.
    Its like sampling only 10 random people from the population of 7 billion to find the different composition of skin colour.

      most laypeople don't understand basic science and think technology *is* magic. for example, politicians want tech companies to put backdoors in their encryption that the government can access but is completely safe from criminals. despite the fact that the entire computing industry is telling them that that's fundamentally impossible, they push for it anyway, with one politicians even saying "of course it's possible, you just need to figure it out" as if being smart and good with computers makes you able to contradict fundamental mathematics.

      @fernlin-healy2174 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It made her feel and look important. In the book by John Carreyrou about the Theranos scandal, which I highly recommend, there is an anecdote about her meeting with Rupert Murdoch. She showed up with 20 bodyguards. Murdoch was confused because, despite being richer and more famous, Murdoch only traveled with one bodyguard. He asked her why she had so many bodyguards, and she told him that the Theranos board insisted on it, which was a total lie.
      By the way, Murdoch has a kind of bad reputation, not entirely undeserved, but I'm impressed with how he handled the Theranos case. He was the single largest individual investor in Theranos. He also owned the Wall Street Journal. Holmes asked him several times to prevent the Journal from publishing their investigation, but Murdoch refused despite the fact that the story would cause him to lose $125 million and look gullible. That's not much for a man that rich, but a lot of people probably would have killed the story in his position, if only to prevent the public from knowing how gullible they were.

      Ruben Change According to the Wall Street Journal, despite making a statement praising his grandson's character, George Shultz continues to side with Theranos in private. For his 95th birthday, he invited Elizabeth Holmes but didn't invite his own grandson! Tyler and his grandfather now only talk through lawyers, and Tyler has had to spend $400,000 on legal fees. Thankfully Tyler's parents (George's son and daughter in law) have supported Tyler. They even mortgaged their home to pay for the legal fees.

When Theranos' lead scientist Ian Gibbons killed himself his wife Rochelle was one of the people who came out to the public and told the media about her husbands fears that the technology was a fraud. Rockart9 his wife didn't whistle blow because she didn't have any information. She contacted the police because the company showed up and started confiscating all his stuff from their house RIGHT AFTER he committed suicide. While that did raise flags with government, that's not the same thing as whistle blowing.
