For ages I never liked how Neil and Finch seemed to get along, since Neil seemed far too upstanding and sensible for FInch to gel with. But then I remembered that Finch is a successful salesman who the company probably love as a whole, and it makes you realise that Neil was happy to go along with Finch's bullshit because the higher ups saw him as an esteemed employee. It just shows the rot of upper management even more plainly that most employees are ignored but men like Finch are admired.

These scenes show how sly Neil really was. Very straight and sensible when Jennifer is around, the complete opposite when it’s Finchy and the lads. That’s why he’s a good manager no doubt. He knows those who are an asset and befriends them. Brent sees it but no one else does.
Same with Finchy, he’s a loud, brash bully. Brent is only friends with him so he is not a target himself.

The scene where David finally tells Finchy to "fuck off" is easily one of the most satisfying moments I've ever seen in a comedy.
Finchy was never David's real friend, he just used him as a human punchbag, and David was just too desperate for approval that he was willing to put up with all of Finchy's shit. When David finally feels he's making progress in life - like finding a date - it was typical of Finchy to be bitter and condescending, and David finally saw through it. I also really love how he gives a last glare at Niel as a final "fuck you too".

4:04 for me is key. This is when the mask finally comes off from Neil. He's never had to remove it before until now. Everything has always gone Neil's way. Educated, well spoken, handsome. Has a partner who's pretty. When he sees David finally with a woman on a date with him who is attractive, who might like him you see that look from Neil for the first time, simply because he's never had to show it before. Anger, displeasure, disapproval. It's not enough for Neil that he's got his life together. He wants David to be alone forever, to be the butt of all jokes. To never be loved and when the first and only time he sees David have the possibility of a ray of light in his life he absolutely detests it, instead of being happy for him.

You've missed the point with Neil. Initially, he's a really nice bloke, even his Swindon employees love him - nothing nasty about him at all, not even hidden away. But his genuine attempts at friendship with Brent are always thrown back in his face because Brent can't deal with this new hierarchy. Neil then turns on Brent because he sees no respect coming his way and feels rejected. Gervais the writer then slowly turns Neil into a prick because he wants Brent (his character) to finish as the good guy with a happy ending. For me, Neil was always the good guy and Brent a tit.

Same here. They're both arseholes and'd be awful to work with in real life, but Finchy has a malicious intent to him, where as Brent is more an inadvertent a moron.

There's a great outtake where Stephen Merchant shouts "cut" with Finchy doing his squeal piggy squeal routine, Ralph Ineson sticks two fingers up and basically tells them to fuck off for humiliating him.

Let's be honest, Wernham Hogg in the 2000s was like the wild west. Practical jokes with sex toys, pornographic emails getting sent to the entire company, drinking during working hours, constant unprofessional behavior at the company's expense. In every episode there's an example of a character doing something that in all reality would be classed as gross misconduct. In fact, by the time they end up asking Brent to leave , he's more than used up his nine lives. Why they felt the need to sweeten the deal with a redundancy package is a bit of a mystery

I love the way everything gets turned around at the end. Brent, always seen as a bit of a loser, turns up with an attractive lady on his arm, whilst Neil & Finch, who always felt they were one-up, are left stood in the corner together, giggling & swapping childish jokes.

No, not Morecambe and Wise, because there's no straight man, there's no dead wood. I'm more sort of character based, and he's more of a gag man. I do gags as well. But we're good together, by now. We sort of read each other's minds - we'll be doing a bit of shtick and we'll just start cracking up, and people watching will go 'Why's that funny?' and we tell them why and they go 'Oh yeah, yeah, you are the best.' It's their opinion
