From what i hear, the smugglers and coyotes are even meaner now. Can't stand criminals who prey on poor, honest, hard working people, whatever their race or ethnicity. He deserved what he got. The problem is so much worse now. It's a shame. Mexico has a lot of potential, but between the cartels and a frequently corrupt government at local and federal levels, it doesn't have a chance.

@Robert Gardea " Mexico ' economy it's the 15 th largest in the world."
May be. But Mexico has way more people living under the local poverty line than in the USA. The Mexican economy is highly dependant on exports to the USA, like China, and in spite of that, incurs a large trade deficit each year.
"15th" doesn't mean ordinary people are well off.
Mexico is a poor slave nation to the USA, just like richer Canada, up north.

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley where a lot of the episodes were filmed. The high school I went to had a student body of 2,500, two were Mexican. Now 43 years later the student body is 80% Mexican.

    • @larkatmic

I did too. north hollywood/studio city 63 -1978. I think what happened was that the middle class that made and built up Los Angeles, and the valley, prospered so quickly that instead of maintaining and making neighborhoods thrive, we simply moved away, because we could afford to. Most kids of the baby boom who grew up there, faired much better financially then their parents. By the mid 1980s, most moved away to the outer suburbs (Santa Clarita, Westlake, Irvine) where houses were bigger, cheaper, and newer and the commute was doable.
Poor and working class people, could now afford to move to the areas the middle class left, and raise their kids. Now move 30 years later to today, and people, tired of the commute to the suburbs, which is abysmal. Traffic at all times of day now. Many are are moving back to L.A. and the valley. reclaiming once thriving neighborhoods, and investing money again to make them desirable..
Now we have Charter schools in neighborhoods where the public school has been dismal for years, forcing LAUSD to step up and teach our kids better. The poor and working class are moving further out to the suburbs, because they are being priced out of apartments and homes here locally. Funny how things are doing the reverse. I would have never thought parts of Hollywood, Silverlake, Echo Park, Fairfax, Inglewood, Culver City, West Hollywood, Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Angeleno Heights, Downtown L.A. and now it looks like Boyle Heights would ever return to being a desirable place to live. But, its happening before my eyes. Downtown North Hollywood has turned over, (albeit slowly) as is Valley Glen, and Sherman Oaks (which has taken a chunk of Van Nuys and claimed it as theirs. LOL! Im sure in 20 years Panorama City, (which was so chic at one time), along with Van Nuys, Reseda, Sepulveda, Arleta, and Canoga Park are going to be again desirable places to live. The unfortunate aspect to a lot of the gentrification going on is the demise of the familiar. Whole city blocks being torn down and redeveloped. Original homes bulldozed to make way for Mcmansions. I guess if you have to pay 5 or 600K on a 2 bed 1 bath house, it makes sense to tear it down and build your own dream. I just wish we lived a bit more modestly like most of us did back in the day. Now everything is over the top. Give me an unmolested, 1 story, 1950s 60s, modest tract house, with a kidney shaped pool anyday.

Probably a lot are Salvadorian as they admitted over a half million refugees in the 1980s. It also brought in the vicious MS 13. I had relatives who lived in the north SF Valley (Newhall/Saugus area) and had many memorable visits from 1968 to 1984 but haven't been there since '89 and have no plans to as they're all gone now & so is the area.

many comments entirely miss the point of watching Highway Patrol; hint, it's not about the "story"
the episodes are no less than a true slice of American history:Eisenhower years
low budgets ensured authenticity; no sets no special effects; we can see what highways, motels, banks, homes, supermarkets etc really used to look like
and what about those magnificent cars: Buicks, Chryslers, Mercurys etc ?
obviously, in that thrifty age, no producer in his right mind would crash, burn or explode a perfectly good vehicle
I certainly wish an automotive expert could take the time to identify the makes and models in each episode
some surprisingly sexy young women, yet never even a hint of hanky-panky!
it was a touch of genius to get an Oscar winner like Broderick Crawford as star to give the show credibility; details of his personal life are entirely irrelevant in any analysis of cinema art
occasionally, you can even spot a young actor or actress who later became famous
other cop shows used forgettable second raters like Jack Webb or Roger Smith, and usually had to resort to shoddy, convoluted plots
half-hour format and little-known scriptwriters contributed to uncomplicated plots, down-to-earth emotional context and painted a concise three-dimensional picture of social stratification in the community

Charles, Well said. All good reasons to be a fan.
The shiny new vintage cars, a realistic look at the actual 50's and just about every female in the show is a hot young starlet.
I also really like spotting the future stars like Clint Eastwood, Barbara Eden and many more who later achieved varying levels of fame.
For us old folks, it's the nostalgia. I enjoyed these very much as a kid and haven't seen them since. Love it!

@@bertgrau9246 The border is still the same as it always has been. Trump ( and the propaganda machine you listen to ) has done a better job of convincing you that he did a better job of protecting the border. He concentrated on convincing you that he did something rather than actually doing anything. He was almost proven right that the president doesn’t have to do anything.

Dan was eager to go to Mexico for this job. Some of the HP guys told him the mezcal and tequila there are "muy baratos" and "abundantes". Dan also found out that he could probably drive south of the border down Mexico way unhindered by his sketchy California DUI record. South of the border, a drinker like Dan is considered "muy macho".

In 1959 it was still during the bracero program years, so the illegal smuggling wasn't really necessary to get in and work the fields. From what I hear that's how the smugglers still do it, just as Douglas does here--, threatens them with prison, take their money and drop them off in the desert, which many will die of thirst.

I was a young teen when these were made. Now I get to relive that time. Thank you Uploader. PS: There are many problems that Chief Dan Mathews and the Highway Patrol dealth with. Seems they did a pretty good job.
