Zarathustra's Indo-European Legacy

  • Jason Reza Jorjani is a philosopher and faculty member at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is author of Prometheus and Atlas.
Here he reviews scholarship that places Zarathustra more than eight thousands years ago, at a time when Indo-European culture had not divided into Vedic, Greco-Roman, and European branches. Zarathustra himself was a religious reformer who endeavored to invert the older relationships between the gods and titans. Jorjani suggests that the spread of Indo-European culture was an effort to avoid the reforms of Zarathustra. Nevertheless, Zarathustra’s teachings survived intact through the order of the Magi he created. Eventually, Zoroastrianism became the state religion of the Persian empire. It also exerted a significant influence on Mahayana Buddhism and Christianity.
New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980). He is a past vice-president of the Association for Humanistic Psychology; and is the recipient of the Pathfinder Award from that Association for his contributions to the field of human consciousness exploration. He is also past-president of the non-profit Intuition Network, an organization dedicated to creating a world in which all people are encouraged to cultivate and apply their inner, intuitive abilities.

In my country the last time this kind of interpretation of history (albeit in a rather raw form) was prevalent was when the Nazis sent friends and family into war and gas.
It's not that new a thinking after all!

@@Flex2212 It is a terrible thing when a just interpretation of history is misused to convince people to commit atrocious acts. It is new for a lot of people who never had the chance to learn their past. It's interesting to hear how much we have in common. We should not imply that such interpretation history is hateful or automatically lead to violence. Have a nice day.

From my own studies, it appears the Shaykhí School that produced the Bab'is and Baha'is is the latest expression in World History of Zoroaster's basic teachings. I am hard at work on my own book on Mithraic/Zoroastrian "Gnostic World Age Passage Archetypal Eternal Return" to make the case that the coming draconian year of 2042 CE will be an Archetypal Mirror on the Jungian subconscious level of 183 CE.

This and the previous interview are incredibly interesting.
A couple of interesting asides: The late singer of the great rock band, Queen, Freddie Mercury, was a Zoroastrian. His real name was Farrokh Bulsara, born in Tanzania. His parents were Parsis from the Gujarat region of India. Mercury's funeral in 1991 was conducted by a Zoroastrian priest.
Another terrific book for those interested in this subject is "Creation" by the great American writer and intellectual Gore Vidal. It is set in the 5th Century B.C. -- and a central element of the plot and theme of this book is Zoroastrianism and how it confronts Greek philosophies, especially that of Democritus -- it's a rich, fabulous read -- I often wonder how "right or wrong" the late Mr. Vidal got his history on the subject of Zoroastrianism. etc.
Once again -- thank you Jeffrey for fantastic stuff!!!

      Elsabe Ackermann
42 And it came to pass that there lived a man and his wife in the eastern part of the wilderness that surrounded the great land of Mesopotamia. And his name was Pouruchathpa, and the name of his wife was Dughdova.
43 And Dughdova was a chosen daughter of God who had the spirit of the Lord with her since the days of her youth. And in the days of her youth she dreamed a dream, in which she saw a great camel descend upon the home of her father. And the camel was golden in color and spoke in her tongue, calling her by name and saying unto her:
44 Behold, truly thou art blessed above all those of the earth. For thou shalt bring forth a son and he shall bring about much righteousness in the land of thy fathers. And in thy heart thou shalt know the things that thou should teach unto him; but the things of thy fathers, even those things which thou hast been taught, teach them not unto him, for he hath been chosen by the great Ahura Mazda, who is thy Lord.
53 And they called their son Zarathustra, which being interpreted means, golden camel, after the vision that his mother had in her youth. And it came to pass that Zarathustra spent the days of his childhood in the house of the blind man. But as the days went on according to the days of Zarathustra, even unto the days of his youth, the blind man began to receive his sight. And he looked upon Zarathustra and thanked the gods for that which had been done unto him.
59 And Ahura Mazda shall be known in the world as the God of Zarathustra, a prophet of God. But this Ahura Mazda is the Father of whom I have spoken of in this record. Thus can ye see that the names which the children of men give unto Him are of little importance to our Father.
62 And Zarathustra taught in the court of the King for many years. But after a time, he went back among the people and began to preach the gospel unto them. And because of his teachings to the King, the people, who were of the nation of the great Persian Empire, which had risen to power after the Babylonian Empire, were ruled with justice.

That is not a new hypothesis, but was theorized by Gamkrelidze and Ivanov in 1980, but is now strongly supported by modern and ancient skeletal DNA studies.

The Lithuanian language is the most conservative and archaic living Indo-European language. There is a close relationship linguistically between Sanskrit and Lithuanian, both grammatically and sentence structure. Lithuanian stories bear a resemblance to India legendary stories. January is called the dry month [Sausis] , and February is called the summer month [Vasaris], in the present geography these names make no sense. Fire worship with vestal virgins keeping the fire lit. The Sun was female, snakes were her sons, the moon was male. Interested in your thoughts.

Positing such an early date for Zarathustra is very doubtful; so is the supposed Iranian homeland for Proto-Indo-European ("from where it spread east and west"); look up geocurrents on youtube for a more sober view of the discussion (the theory is belied by genetics, loanwords, and our earliest sources from Mesopotamia that clearly shows when Iranian speakers entered Iran). The talk is still very informative, but watch out: Giving such credence to dates from Classical authors is dangerous; the fact that they give the same or similar dates suggests that they rely on the same tradition. Beckwith has written on the spread of ideas across Eurasia beginning in the Bronze Age (Empires of the Silk Road, but watch out for some of his very fringe ideas on Indo-European as well). IF one wanted to push the ideas Z. espoused so far back, the name is surely an Iranian innovation.

I believe the Idea of Thor's hammer is a reference to the Norse tribes finding of "King's Steel" or Damascus steel. Also the Norse pantheon is structured very closely to the Greek pantheon. Not to mention their alphabet and boats. I suspect that the Greeks have mentioned the Norse in their folklore and may have maintained contact until the Romans became an empire.

*_As a Kurd I am happy to see actual scholars speak about something that have seemed so innately truthful finally as fact, for example the fact that the Kurds are indeed the Medes and that the Achaemenid (Medo-Persian) Empire is born out of the Median one, a fact that has been and still is somewhat challenged by modern Iranian nationalists, however in deffence of Iranians, it is mostly the Pahlavi-follower Diaspora who are deceptive about the history of the Medes and the Kurds rather than actual Iranians in Iran. All in all, this is trumendously insightful to people who, like me, have read extensively about the history of the Aryans, the Medes, Persian, their empire(s), the scythians, and of course the world at large. I have to say though it is surprising that this Jason Jorjani is associated with the Alt-right. I would love it if someone could explain that to me. Amazing interview and extremely intriguing._*

There has been a welcome change in the past twenty years or so, and a lot of progress has been made in challenging Eurocentric paradigms in various fields in the social sciences. Much of the progress has been made in bits and pieces, and there are no cogent multi-cultural frameworks and perspectives yet in most fields. This progress has largely been achieved due to the fact that people from different countries from around the world have taken up positions in eminent and prestigious American and European universities, and have raised objections and concerns on important issues. Thus, we can see a multicultural perspective emerging on different issues (big change even from the year 2000, when many obsolete paradigms of consequence to different cultures remained unchallenged) However, solving a complex puzzle such as that of Indo-European origins is a different ballgame altogether, and requires not only an inter-disciplinary approach, but also a multi-cultural one. What experiential knowledge would an Indian national have of Iceland, Albania, or Kazakhastan? This is easier said than done and requires persistence and dedication. Such endeavours may take decades and will call for proficiency in many different languages, knowledge of different cultures and a thorough grasp on different regional histories as well. I still see this as a distant pipedream, as few researchers have even thought on these lines, as yet. However, raising awareness may expedite things a bit. It is now time to kick start that process!

The “ names” are actually attributes of AhuraMazda and each has a meaning. AhuraMazda and his 6 helpers ( total 7 ) are the Ameshaspands, followed by 23 Yazads. In total 30 days of the Zarathustrian calendar. There are 3 more whose names are not in the calendar. Total 360 days plus 5 days to recite the Gathas. Every 4 years one day is added in the original Fasli calendar. When seeking refuge in India the priests forgot to add the one day and so the Shanshahi ( Parsi ) calendar was born. The prayers are the same for one and all. Only when reciting the name of the day and month, that is different. The exact time of the Spring Equinox is the start of Navroze and every one celebrates it on 21 March. This discussion I must have heard at least a dozen times and I love hearing 5 /6 others countless times, too . Thanks Dr. Jorjani, Yatha ni madad on you.
