- Painting in the English Landscape - plein air oils on paper
Today I am painting en plein air in a daffodil field somewhere in Cornwall. Using oil paints on paper I made this quick 50 minute oil sketch on a very grey, dull morning - but I enjoyed myself.
Basil came along for the ride today as I knew it would be a quick sketch / painting.
Colours used today:
Warm White, Cad Yellow, Naples Yellow, Lemon Yellow, Cad Red, Magenta, Indian Red, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber, Violet, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Ivory Black and Sap Green.
Mediums used:
Genuine Turpentine and a mix of Stand Oil and Turps
Thanks for watching - bye for now

I am enjoying all the Cornish ambience ,the sounds of the crows and the daffodil fields. couldn't be anywhere else.
Thank you so much - Happy New Year to you
I am starting to get into painting landscapes now and I find your channel very informative, I thank you. I think that finding an environment that stimulates you when you make art is important, for me it is quiet and fresh crisp air, and I think this painting captures this for me.
You are very welcome. Thank you so much for your kind comments. Best wishes - Andrew
This is a lovely painting ! Wonderful variety of colors and rich contrasts here. I love the telephone poles and the lovely greens in the foreground. It’s always fun to watch you paint and see what you create even if you are not completely happy with it!
Many thanks Lisa - I think the foreground was better before I added in the yellows. Should have left it!
Take care
wonderful and loose and Basil is so cute
Thank you very much 😃
You transformed the scene into something interesting Andrew.
Thank you Anita 😃
All painters have their failures, but only the best painters recognise them publically, and learn something from them. Well, that's my theory anyway!
Don't be too hard on yourself, Andrew, you'll pull it round.
Thank you so much Mark - I might return in a week or two when the daffodils are out. It will become a lively, colourful scene to paint then - with different challenges
Lovely. You thoughts as you paint are great.
Thank you very much 😊
Great colors, interesting painting!
Thanks Joane
Wonderful greens...your style is very water-color-ish...lovely
Thank you very much Cris
Sehr schöne Studien in Ölfarben.... Schönen Sommer & Grüße Douglas

Looks great, Andrew!!😊
Hi Leslie
Thank you 😊
Thank you. I am still in the beginning stages of plein sir painting. I liked your approach and look forward to more videos.
Thank you John
Well, this made me smile :)
Thank you Andrew, Fantastic! Love the style.
Glad you enjoyed it - thank you
It is all too easy to avoid painting! Got out of bed the wrong side…. It’s a grey cloudy day…… the scene does not inspire or I am not inspired to produce a masterpiece!!! So pleased you posted this, it gives us all a useful prod to engage and attempt a task. The use of gesso on paper is an excellent and economical method of working either out of doors or in a series of small images doe the daily studio paintings. It also was a happy reminder that spring comes early in Cornwall!
Thank you so much Ian 😀
I like painting onto paper although the gesso I used on this sheet was a bit too dry and felt like sandpaper
Прекрасно!
Thank you very much 😃
Very nice Andrew! I love the variety of scenery you have in Cornwall. And how you paint it!
Thank you so much Michael. I really appreciate your kind comments. I love your ‘thick paint’ video 👍🏻
If you would like to try a remote painting collaboration sometime please let me know. I’d love to do that 😃
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Thanks!
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt I'm hoping to visit Cornwall sometime soon so maybe we can paint in person!
@@chamberlainpaintings that sounds awesome - look forward to it
Very interesting
Thank you
Well done, Andrew.

Nice one Andrew.
Thank you kindly Keith
This is very inspiring to get out there and sketch....thank you ! from Quebec..I'll have to wait a bit for warmer weather !
Thank you very much Lucille - I am looking forward to Spring too
Lovely to see you again Andrew . I really love the English landscape. Keep up the great work. Co Donegal calling.☘️
Thank you kindly Rosemary
I think the subject you chose, and your painting are really quite good. It's better than you think. Sometimes we can be too hard on ourselves thinking it's not interesting. If you set it aside for a few weeks, then go back and look at it with fresh eyes. You might feel differently. I like your style!
Thank you very much Lisa. I appreciate your comments. I have just subscribed to your channel
@@AndrewBarrowmanArt Thanks! ❤️
Very nice work Andrew ,, I mostly paint on oil paper now as it’s makes them so much easier to dispose of afterwards ,, and if on the 5th Wednesday in the month someone does happen to part with a couple of quid to buy one I just glue it to a bit of board that will then sit nicely in a float frame I make 👍👍
That sounds like a great idea. I do glue mine to board sometimes so I can float frame but find it easier to sell them unframed - and I don't have to sort out the framing 😀
I love i actually❤
Thank you so much Louise
Beautiful - thank you
Green Fields in January,
At the latitude of Leningrad
But, bullfinches do not fly to them there
They don't need all this.
They want to break in
In fresh space
Where there are kilometers of snow
And soon they will see
Crash of Chinese gods
Children of Tibet
Well, of course You'll have to do another one when the Daffodills will be in full Bloom. That'll be quite spectacular. Or one with Basil chilling on the Ground.
If I can catch the daffodils before they pick them that would be a great idea
Hi Andrew ... Overall a nice oil sketch of the fields ... Just a thought about the foreground ... Perhaps add more contrast with a darker more vibrant green(s) ? Seems like all the greens have same value ? ... just a friendly observation 🌞
Hi Nancy and thank you
I think the foreground looked ok at one point when I first added some cooler greens in but it got muddy when I introduced some yellow. I might rework it when dry and post the result
What a simple scene but resulted in a beautiful painting! can I ask how much all your art supplies weigh? Glad you had a good time! :D
Thank you so much 😊
The painting gear weighs quite a lot especially when I carry video equipment too
Bonsoir excellente idée que de peindre sur du papier . Vous avez préparé celui ci avec du Gesso. ou avec un autre produit ?
Cordialement
Merci beaucoup Luc. I used rabbit skin glue and chalk for the gesso. It was like painting on fine sandpaper
Is your palette glass or plastic?
Glass. I had the glaziers cut it to fit. It’s quite heavy to carry with everything else, but I like it
